  1. Great job there John. Congratulations on the 6 fish. Awesome job! Keep up the good work. Good story and thank you much for sharing. This weekend will hopefully be filled with landing a couple of lumps. The Philly fish in is on Saturday and then on Sunday I am taking a couple of fellow CAGers to some local ponds to hopefully educate some mirror carp on the fundamentals of flyrodding. (There are mirrors in there up to 25 pounds). Again John congratulations on your accomplishment. By the way what brand of hook was it that broke?

  2. Great story Scott. Remember about 2.5 years ago on the Fishguys forum I told you to savor all the bank time with your dad that you could? Glad to see you guys are making sweet memories. How soon will it be before Zander (sorry if it is misspelled) enters the junior championships at the "Larry"? Good to see you guys fairing well. Take care and maybe I'll see you again in Philly sometime or maybe in Austin some year. :D

  3. Get a drop net.

    Anthony,

This is the best advice that anyone could have given to you concerning fishing from a bridge. One other tip if you get a drop net. Tie the end of the rope off on the railing of the bridge. You can become proficient at using the drop net to the point where you will not need help. How does the old saying go, "Try it you'll like it"!

Congratulations on your first of '06. My estimation: 7-9 pounds. :D

  4. Really good story John. It has been my experience that overcast days are better for stalking Koi. Like you mentioned, you couldn't see 2 feet down. In retrospect, the Koi could not see 2 feet up. Therefore a better undetected stalk could be made. Keep at him/her and I'm sure that you'll be landing him and all this frustration will be worth the prize! :D

  5. I have used the bite alarms from ebay. Caught a lot of fish that I probably would not have by using them. However, I also caught a few fish that did not even set off the alarm. This year I bought a pair from ACS. They have a sensitivity control, so the light bites should be more readily detected. My advice would be to save your money a little and buy higher quality from the beginning. This is coming from a guy who never thought that he would even get in to all this newer "high tech" stuff. If you buy higher quality from the beginning, you'll save money in the long run. Don't get me wrong the original bite alarms are still working fine, it's just that I wanted something with a little more sensitivity. That is why my step son is now the proud owner of my original bite alarms. (Traded them for his old blender when he bought a new one). Now I have a blender for my method mixes. Never thought I would get into that either, but that's another topic.

  6. Instead of a monofilament leader, try flouracarbon for your tippet material. Seaguar is the best. The Koi in my avatar was landed on 4 pound Seaguar flouracarbon. Ultralight spinning gear, not a fly rod unfortunately. But after casting to this guy and his little brother for over 2 months using monofilament to 4 pound test and having them spook almost constantly, I got lucky and got a tip from Bill (WG-the Koi master) about usuing 4 pound Seaguar flouracarbon. It's virtually invisible in the water. Going to try it for tippet material this year myself. Hope this helps. :D

PS The excitement level was so high that I don't remember the fight too much, but I think it included 3 or 4 runs. :D

  7. John,

Congratulations on a fine day with the fly rod. To share your passion of nature with your daughter is priceless. :D I enjoy your attitude and dedication about the Koi. Stick to it and I'm sure you will find him with his guard down at some point. Thank you for sharing your adventure with us all. Again congratulations to you sir. Keep on haulin' them in with the fly rod! :D

  8. Congratulations on your latest capture. Ending a dry spell certainly is sweet. Good luck with your warrenty. May those exploits be hastle-less. :D Did you have a picture of the fish?

  9. Jerome,

I certainly hope that you weren't experimenting with an idea for a new "challenge" for the CAGI. I believe that Louis and Donnie have encountered similar circumstances at Phily fish ins. I think they have pics of the event too. :D Any way congratulations on your new PB. Maybe if you have a rough estimate of the size Scott O. can tell you what the weight was. :D

  10. Ben,

Great way to have a birthday celebration. Happy birthday and hope you can get many more (birthdays and carp on the fly). Have you tried Ian Colin James' muncher at all? Good job and congratulations on a fine accomplishment! :D Looks to be a fine specimen.

  11. Could this be a genetic thing where the skin of the fish has varing degrees of sensitivity to the light? Just another thought. There probably isn't a color variation of Koi that Bill doesn't presently have in his pond Matt. :D

  12. Got my flies in the mail yesterday as well. Lux thank you for organizing a great swap.

Brian-do not despair. You can reach a lot of fish by "JUST" roll casting. Really a matter of improving your stealth to match your casting abilities. There were and still are times when fish are so close to me that I have to back off in order to make a cast. Hang in there, it will happen. :D

  13. Louis,

Great looking mullberries there sir. Pink foam stacked with white and green might give you the half ripened effect. You could just use white foam and color with permanent markers. Very innovative on your part. That is what I like to see. :D

  14. Believe me I of all people know how true that saying is...especially after yesterday. Went out with the fly rod to do some serious damage on educating some of the local carp population. Guess who got the education? That would be me. I think that I casted to every large carp and all the Koi in the pond. Yes they were actively feeding. Had a lot of lookers, almost hit a nice carp on the nose with the fly (no he/she didn't even move), and managed to capture only one small common ( about 1 pound). A humbling experience to say the least.

Have to be positive though, I've managed a carp on the fly every month of the year so far. I'm hoping at the least the tough months are behind me and that things start getting easier with the fly rod. :D

  15. I second Lowell's (kingfisher's) sentiments on that. No need to apologize. Just the fact that you are willing to step up to the plate and organize this swap is great. Thank you for your efforts. They make the club better. :D Tight lines! :D
