  1. Very nice Jerome, Congratulations are definitely in order there. Good job! That fish is no doubt bigger now, so you can break your own record! :D That is the beauty of catch and release! :D We need to thank you for all that you do for the club. Again congratulations!

  2. Jason,

Yes, actually both of these were caught at the pumping station. There are some major pieces of structure that are right off shore so that even with my limited casting distance, I can make an honest effort of it. Viritual carp magnets with a little chumming. Find anything to your liking out there on the west coast? :D Keep in touch! :D

    AnthonyR,

That's the recipe for success with that particular fly! Now it's your turn. You have the tools! :D Good luck and don't forget the camera. I want to see that bad boy you catch posted here on the forum. :D

  3. Here is the second one that was captured this afternoon. This one fell victim to something that I created. It is my version of the corn fly. Resembles a single kernal of corn. There is no finer accomplishment than catching a fish on something that you created and manufactured on your own. Boy am I happy. :D

  4. January has been good to me with the fly rod. Two carp in a month that I never used to fish for them and on the fly rod to boot. Here is the first one caught on January 19th. This one fell for a fly that Kingfisher (Lowell) has created and was kind enough to tell us how to tie it in his fly fishing article. His creation is called the bread fly. Actually, just glo bug yarn tied to a hook, but very deadly on the pond carp. If you look closely you can see the fly along the edge of the fly rod.

  5. Great job there Jerome. It is getting quite evident to me that the carp in this area are using the same traveling routes in order to look for the chum line. Thank you very much for sharing your expertise with us all. This is really awesome stuff. Makes me proud to be a carp fisherman! Be curious to see what would happen if you ran a crayfish type lure (jig, crankbait, or fly) through there real slow. I'm thinking that either a carp will inhale it or one of the bass will. You could probably keep a jig in the camera area longer. Thanks again for sharing. You da video man! :D

  6. My answer would have to be yes as long as there is open water (still in liquid form) to fish. I've been "playing" with the fly rod this winter to hone my casting skills (mostly lack there of) and was fortunate enough to hook and land a carp on January 16. Now my goal is to catch at least 1 carp on the fly rod every month this year. I think it is a very realistic goal. :D

Jason knows what he's talking about when it comes to fly fishing so I would take his advice seriously! My attitude is such that I see even a bad day of fishing is a million times better than any day of work, so if you can, go fish! Besides it's good therapy. :D

    Tight lines!

  7. Very nice. If it is going to be passed around from winner to winner year after year, then the base should contain the names of the winners, what their winning fish weighed and the year won. Kind of like the Stanley Cup in hockey. Perhaps a slightly smaller version for each year's winner to keep. I really like it. :D

  8. Anthony,

Bass Pro Shops' fly shop is called White River Outfitters and if yours is half as good as the one here in Harrisburg, Pa. you'll be in for a real treat. Every Saturday and Thursday they have casting demonstrations where they give 1 on 1 teaching. They even have free fly tying classes where they teach the basics. Their job in part is to help you to become more proficient at fly fishing. This in turn makes you a more regular customer. A very good trade off for both parties. I like the advice of keep fishing as that is the best way to learn and to know what you really need help with. Keep at it! Soon enough you will be telling us of your first fly rod carp. :D Tight lines!

  9. I know that generally speaking here in Pennsylvania things have slowed down since the temperature has gotten colder. Warming trends in the weather seem to be a little more favorable for the catching department. Also rivers with power plants and warm water discharges seem to produce fairly consistantly all year long

as long as water flow and conditions remain relatively good. So I guess what I am trying to say is that it all depends on conditions of water and weather. Hope this helps. :D

  10. Want to take this opportunity to inform everyone who has read this article by Lowell to tie a few of these guys up. Thursday evening while we here in southeast Pennsylvania were experiencing a warming trend, I decided to try one of Lowell's bread flies that I had tied on Saturday. It is still the middle of January, and I really did not think that I could get a carp on the fly in January. Boy was I wrong! I was fortunate enough to catch a mirror carp right around 6 pounds. So these flies work and I would like to publically thank Lowell for all he is doing to promote fly fishing for carp. There are others like Jason and still others who I haven't met yet but my hat goes off to for all their tireless efforts in helping us less than proficient fly anglers achieve success. Many thanks to all. And to coin a phrase "Try it-you'll like it". :D

PS My casting stinks, my technique stinks even more, but boy do I ever have fun!

  11. I agree with everything that Lowell is recommending and I will add 1 more to the list. The San Juan worm. This is an aquatic worm that in my estimation (I'm still kind of experimenting with it) carp feed on while rooting through the muck and leaves decaying on the bottom. Like I said, just a theory, but I think it will work. :D

  12. Anthony,

Sight fishing is by far easier and more productive than any other method I've experienced in fly fishing for carp. If you employ some of the same methods as bait fishermen do (i.e. chum an area), then you can up the percentages of catching. If you let bread float on the surface does this get the carp in your area feeding on the surface? It is always very exciting to catch a carp from the surface be it with the fly rod and some kind of bread fly, or just live lining bread with an ultralight spinning rod. Do what you can to put the percentages in your favor and catch a few carp. Then for variety, go to a creek and/or a river and hone your skills on river fish. No matter what method is used you will be developing skills you can use for a lifetime. Enjoy-that is the key to any fishing. Good luck and tight lines! :D

  13. As far as I'm concerned 8 is "great". Already my way of thinking was to tie two different colors for each person, sooooo-no problem on my part. Probably one brown and one red San Juan worm. Just let me know the details and where to send the merchandise. Love this comoraderie between fellow carpers. It's great! :D

  14. Bill,

Now it's my turn to sound like a broken record. Congratulations on yet another addition to your now world famous Koi pond. If you need an agent to try for a contract with SeaGuar just let me know. (Just kidding)! Beautiful looking fish there Bill. Keep the netting over the pond 'cause the blue herons will clean you out my friend. Again good job on all of those Koi. Thanks for sharing. :D

  15. Congratulations again to the boys who with a great teacher learn fish catching very well. They as well as you did an excellent job in the FFF. Watch out for that next generation of carp/koi catchers. Bill has them going bonkers already. Congrat's again to the whole Gordon fishing fraternity. WTG guys! :D

  16. Congratulations to all who participated in this year's FFF. Just to be out there fishing before 6 AM is an accomplishment in some states(and provinces). Thank you Jerome for putting together a wonderful event. I already am looking forward to the next one. My hat goes off to the New England crew for the weather adversity that they delt with. Congratulations to everyone again. Take care and tight lines to all! :D

  17. I'm gonna go way out on a limb here, but let me guess. 4 pound SeaGuar flouracarbon with your infamous "noodle" rod. Am I warm? Seriously Bill as I've said before when it comes to fishing, you da man! Excellent catch there. Don't need any help filling up that Koi pond I see. Congratulations to you Mr. WG. :D

And again thanks for all of your help and moral support.
