  1. P.S. Yes it was 35" and 24lbs. and the miracle is that my wife lost the bigger one. She actually thought she was snagged on a rock until it started moving. We got a pretty good look at it and I would estimate it at right around 30lbs and maybe 38 inches long. Like I said if she would have landed it I would not have ever lived it down. But it,s all in good natured fun and that is what family fishing is all about.

    Take care.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday I caught a new PB Mirror Carp. My wife lost one that was even bigger. I have caught bigger Commons, but this was definitely a challenge with a 4 foot rod and 6 pound test line. Caught on sweet corn at a local pond. (Greenfield industrial park for those of you who are familiar). Thank you for allowing me to share my catch with you guys. Take care and tight lines to all of you!

Scott, I appologize for my computer illeteracy as I could not cut and paste the attachment. If you go back to www.fishguys.org under the "not so local fishing" column and click on PB Mirror it is there. Again I apoligize for my short comings. Take care and hope to meet up with you some day. :D

  3. Scott,

Beautiful fish there sir. I just love the way that mirror carp look. My family has been catching more mirror carp than usual down here in Pa. this year. We caught two at the Philly Fishin and numerous ones here in Lancaster County, including my PB 24 pound beauty. Must be the luck of the Irish, or in my case German-Irish.

I noticed that in the center picture there is a person feeding the ducks. Is this in a park? That seems to be where we are catching a lot of carp i.e. where there is a lot of activity of people feeding bread and corn to the ducks. Obviously the waterfowl does not get all of the feed. That is good use of your resources there Scott. I like the way you think. In those venues the carp are really use to seeing people, and that is an advantage. Wouldn't you agree? I'll bet that you were free lining bread again, weren't you? Good job and my hat is off to you sir. Thank you for sharing your success stories. :D:D

  4. Welcome Vaughan! I don't think that any two people can post as much as your son. Just kidding. As I have mentioned to him on another forum, you and he remind me of my father and I while I was growing up. Welcome to the forum and don't worry about keeping Scott under control. If I'm right you feel that is an impossible task. I look at it that someone had to teach Scott about carp fishing when he had a runny nose and could barely walk. Good job! :D:D:D

  5. Louis,

As always you never cease to amaze me with your prowess and savvy. I'm doing some investagative work here in my section of the state. So far what I have found out is that the state fish and boat commission is of no help and the one pond that did have grass carp has been drained to rid the water of them. Some day my grass carp ship will come in. :D

  6. Jerome,

Nice story and pictures. Every time that I try night fishing the mosquitoes eat me alive. Seems the insect repellant attracts 'em. Off seems like "on" if you know what I mean. Maybe someone could recommend a good repellant? Any way thanks for sharing and congratulations! :D

  7. This is just a fact that I really never gave much thought about before, but in finding out facts they sometimes prove to be very interesting. I'm sure a lot of you other guys have similar stories.

Right now I know of 3 CAG members including myself that share the same fish as our personal best mirror carp. At 24 lbs. it is not a small fish. I personally have caught the fish 2x now. First time it was by just by using regular sweetcorn and blind fishing. The second time I actually saw him surface feeding and stalked him and got him on a piece of bread. Both times the equipment was ultralight spinning tackle.

While at the Philly fish in Louis and Matt almost knew some of the fish as personal friends, having caught them before and recognizing them by some distinguishing marks. This is very refreshing and kind of makes up for the times that you see the jerks keeping and killing everything they catch. Or worse yet the people who just let the carp lay on the bank.

Thank you CAG for supporting catch and release fishing. Thank you for the standards that you have and the care that you guys take to release all fish with as little harm as humanly possible. :D

Click on that link, read all the articles that are of interest to you, then go through the "Beginning Carping" posts on this forum again picking the posts that are of interest to you. Then if you have any questions, feel free to ask away. It has been my experience that the guys and gals here are more than eager to lend a helping hand to anyone pursuing this great sport. Hope that's a help to get you started, and welcome aboard! Keep us informed of your successes and failures as that is the best way that we can help and give encouragement. :D

  9. Andy,

Necessity is the mother of invention and believe me having a restraint for the Scooby Doo rod is a necessity. Today on the way home from work I stopped at the hardware store for a PVC fitting to mount to the side of my tackle box. With my luck I'll be chasing the whole tackle box into the water. Maybe a fighting gimbal attached to a lawn chair...No way cause the only time I would get a bite is when I'm not in the chair. All kidding aside, I'm glad that my escapades have sparked an interest for peaple to "take the challenge". :D

  10. Tried a hair rig with some sweetcorn today for the 1st time. Actually I was amazed, not (amaized) at the number of kernels of corn that fit on the rig. I've been giving it some thought and was wondering if adding a miniature marshmellow to the hair would give it a little bouyancy? Can someone help this old rookie? Please! See now you guys got me thinking and that is dangerous. I did not catch anything on the rig, but was impressed with the way it looked.

  11. Jerome,

Understand exactly what you are saying about losing the Scooby rod. Monday and today were vacation days for me so I decided to head up to Speedwell Forge Lake, which is a fairly small lake north of where I live. Upon arriving at my spot, I baited up the Scooby Doo rod and put it down to get my other rod equipped for fishing. The very next thing that I remember was hearing the drag singing on the Scooby Doo. Suddenly it went flying through the air towards the water. I think that the fishing rod hit the water only a split second before I did. Didn't think because I didn"t have time to. Just pure instinct and reaction time. I was in the water up past my waist, but I salvaged my Scooby rod. The line broke as soon as I retrieved the rod. I can only invision the monsterous size of that carp. In my mind he was definitely a 20+. Reality is it was probably more like 10-12lbs. That is part of the mystique of fishing with this equipment. After taking off my shoes and socks and putting my wallet on my tackle box to dry out I put another leader and hook on the Scooby rod. Baited up, casted out, put the rod down to take the other rod out of the water because that is where I threw it and you guessed it. Scooby went flying again! This time my reaction time was tremendous as I snagged it with my right hand in mid air. Landed this guy, about a 5 pounder. Next thing that I did was what I think anyone would do. I looked around to see if anyone had just witnessed what this idiot had just done. Twice! Good I thought, no one saw me. I can just imagine trying to explain why a 52 year old man weighing 270 pounds is chasing a little Scooby Doo rod. Especially with no kids around to point at. Stayed around for about an hour or so, caught 1 more small carp on the Scooby Doo, then headed to the Fish Commission office to find out about the fish for free days for next year. Didn't get ant funny looks for the way I looked, so that was good. All in all like I had mentioned before the Scooby Doo rod has brought back the excitement into carp fishing. Tight lines to you sir and some day we will meet and Swap Scooby snacks.

  12. The Scooby Doo Challenge was everything that it was suppose to be...a real challenge. I do not know who came up with the idea originally, but I want to say that it is everything that the name implies, and then some. Using the Scooby Doo rod really brought back the excitement in carp fishing for me. Don't get me wrong, it's not that I do not enjoy catching 20+ and sometimes even 30+ lb. fish, it's just that there is a special something about a grown man going 1 on 1 with a carp of any size using what most people would consider a toy. Even the first run that a 5 pound carp makes using a Scooby Doo can make the hair on the back of your neck stand up. Practice definitely helped me out to land my carp on such tackle that we would deem fit for a three year old.

At this point I must apologize though because I do not know how to load the pictures on this site. However if you go to Matt and Louis' site, www.fishguys.org you can see the pictures of my Scooby Doo caught 8+lb. carp. Did anyone else out there catch a carp on the Scooby Doo rod at the CAGI?

This catch was dedicated to my dad who is no longer with us on this venue. He took the time to take me fishing, and while we were waiting for the next carp to bite he would teach me about life. Dad is sorely missed, but goes fishing with me every time that I go. Dad died of cancer about ten years ago now. He was, as I'm sure a lot of fathers were to their sons, somewhat of a hero to me. Always will be.

If any of you other guys have given the Scooby Doo challenge a try you'll know exactly what I mean when I say that it sure is a blast. To date the 8+lb. carp is the heaviest that I have landed on this outfit and my timing could not have been better. Praise God! Next I would like to try to land one over 10lb. on good ole Scooby.

Don't want to be too long winded here, but I just want to say that this Scooby Doo challenge thing has brought a lot of excitement back into carp fishing for me. If you haven't tried it my suggestion is to do so because it will honestly change the way you think about fishing. Talk about getting back to basics, that'll do it.

Before you ask, no I am not sponsored by Shakespere tackle. :D:D:D

  13. Let me start this by saying that this is a great site full of valuable information written by some of the best carp anglers in the world. I personally have been a carp fisherman for 41 years now. Until last year allI knew were two baits (dough and sweetcorn) and about as many rigs. My fishing rods were and still are medium action spinning rods. (One thing has changed this year though is that I've added a Scooby Doo rod to my carp fishing arsenal). I've caught carp in the 20's and I think maybe some in the 30's. Didn't get a scale until this year too! My point is that while all this information is good, a lot of it is too advanced to be in the "Beginning Carping" section. Maybe you guys should start an "intermediate carping" section and an "advanced carping" section. Beginning carping should stick to the simple tried and true methods of catching carp without having to know how to tie certain rigs, make boilies, method mixes, etc. In other words use the K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simple Stupid) method for carp fishing-for beginners anyway. This is just a thought, so if it is a bad idea I'm sorry. Thank you for allowing me to air my opinion. :D:D:D

    John 3:16

  14. Certainly my hat is off to you Scott. You are definitely entitled to your opinion regardless of what names they call you. I truely doubt that a carp could attain that size in an environment where competition for food is the important factor, not what time of the day are the morsels coming from the helping hand. Probably part of the issue here is preference and ethics. That is the way I see it. As you guys would say, "just my $.02". :D
