  1. Carl, the main thing to have is backing under the fly line. Carp are notorius for making long runs after being hooked. As far as a leader material goes my theory is to keep things very simple. A 6 to 8 foot piece of 8 pound test monofilament is a good starting point. Ian Colin James says it best and even has a diagram on his website showing just a straight leader. Once you get that first carp you'll be hooked for life. Cabelas and Bass Pro Shops usually give casting instructions free of charge. The BPS in Harrisburg even has Thursday night fly tying instructions free of charge as well. Good luck and keep it all simple at first. That is my recommendation to you. Hope this helps.

  3. Bart,

Lowell (kingfisher) and myself sometimes fish (he catches) the Allentown area. I don't know when the next time is that we are heading up that way, but I will keep you in mind. If you don't mind traveling a bit we often fish in the Reading/Lancaster area and there even I catch a few. We fly fish and bait fish too. At Allentown the ducks love my method mix. :yourock: Just ask Lowell.

  4. Week days are better than weekends as far as crowds go. Some lakes are better at night due to boat traffic. There is no set rule and if there was I'm sure that some of the fish would break it. Welcome to the forum!

Have you read the articles on the website about fly rod carping? Good information and a great starting place for you. Easiest fly to tie is the Puke fly. You can go on the Ian Colin James website to find some serious information too.

are you referring to THIS website? I have yet to find anything about tips or technique for fly fishing...

I did see the puke fly, and like it alot, but I'm unable to tie anything at this point an time, maybe later

    I'll google it up, thanks

I am by no means computer savy, but I will try to give you a means to get "there" from "here" type of thing. When you first get on the internet go to the ask search engine (www.ask.com). In the box provided type in the words "carp on the fly". This will get you to a page that is full of information of different web pages that will give virtually tons of information. Of special recognition (and excuse me if I forget anyone) is a blog by John Montana, An article by Lowell King (www.carpanglersgroup.com/tyingcarpflies) and my favorite character when it comes to fly fishing, Ian Colin James. This should give you quite a bit of information to digest. Sorry that this took awhile, but things have been hectic lately. Hope this helps. Welcome to the enlightened side.
