  1. possum

As for myself, I never thought of The West Virginny hills as a "spit spot" - I always thought of you as Arkansas with "penis envy".

What? Maybe 40 miles one way across the state?

    Phone

Flatten it out and it's the largest state we have!

I like WV. Need to get there again and do some fishin'.

  3. I love River Monsters! Too bad we don't have TV anymore. :) I liked the Wels show, and the one on Arapaima (Did I spell that right?)

Dumb question maybe.....but what happened to your TV?

You probably accomplish a lot more during your day w/o tv.......................

  4. What is the average lifespan of a carp in a paylake? About a season or so? Why do they have to keep restocking multiple times a year?

    Ha!

I inquired about this very issue in the past. Never received a "real" answer. According to the 'experts' carp thrive in paylakes.

Their (paylakers) argument(s) still make no sense to me. (Paylakers - chime in please).

FYI - I have nothing against paylakes, even fish them from time to time. I know what they are - I just choose not to sugar coat it.

  5. nice fish! but a real carper use a fishing mat! for big and for small carps. luca from italy

Fishing mats are cesspools of disease and bacteria. Bill from USA.

    EDIT: 1. removed LOL emoticons

    B. corrected spelling (added second "s" to cesspools)

  6. Since I typically fish alone, I don't have time to take a picture of all the fish I pull in. Especially with me holding on to them.

I've been fishing at this spot almost daily, it's not a secret spot nor is it a really popular spot to fish. It's downtown Allegan Michigan on the Riverfront. So if you want to fish it, feel free - tons of hogs down there. Everyone feeds them bread, icecream cones, etc.

I'm not exactly sure of the weight, but if I had to guess I'd say around at least 17lbs. It was pretty thick. It was probably the most difficult fish I've taken out of the water with out a net. I sliced my hands all up on my line from wrapping it around my hand for leverage. I learned my lesson there... now I always take gloves and a net.

Just a friendly question since I'm pretty new to catching carp for sport, am I holding the fish right? I don't have my fingers up in it's gills or anything, I never do that with any fish. I sure wouldnt want someone sticking their fingers in my lungs..

I See you are near Allegan see if you can get some access to Miner Lake. (I think there is a small public boat launch there - otherwise the rest of the shoreline is private) - there are some hogs in there - including my MI PB of 29lbs.

I lost access to this lake and am wanting to get back.

Also, below Allegan Dam swim some mighty carps as well.............

  7. fitzz,

Are these "named" fish in well protected sanctuaries? I suppose, at least in NA, this is the most vulnerable time of the year for mortality. I know it is not a comparison of much merit to the UK crowd, but the Southern paylake pond bosses really earn their keep this time of year keeping their fish stock healthy.

    Phone

What exactly do they do to keep their fish stock healthy?

  8. "1. always "pack heat" when you fish. Especially when alone."

    ----

You 'pack heat', you get heat.

I gave my 'heat' away when I came back from Vietnam.

Lots of heat there. Including napalm.

    I don't like 'heat' anymore.

America is in love with 'heat'. We have a war every 10 years.

Think of what our schools would be like if we used that $ to hire good teachers.

Our infrastructure is falling apart because we don't have the money??

Too much 'heat' in America's psyche.

    A. Thank you for your service to this country. It is appreciated!

    2. The schools/teachers are not the problem. The problems are the parent's (or lack of) and societies belief that the schools obligation is to "raise" their children. Kids NEED to arrive at school "ready to learn" - but unfortuantley (and for reasons too numerous to mention here) many do not. You can't "teach" a kid who's basic needs at HOME have not been met.

Schools are not supposed to be welfare agencies.

    C. I feel comfortable carrying "heat". Responsible/legal owners/carriers are NOT the problem.

I suggest somebody locking this thread before it gets out of hand.

  9. Trip #2 has been completed (Aug 8 & 9).

Started off great, two fish in the first hour or so - then a great big blank!

I'll blame the heat to save face. :)

May attach a few more pics (including "Muskie Holocaust" {not for the squemish} when I can find the time.)

Still though, 2 days on the river ain't bad..............

  10. Yes, the football shape is a characeristic of israeli carp, and maybe some other strains. Possibly dictated by environment.

Israeli carp are not fully scaled and are actually very devoid of scales from my understanding. Many say they are smaller, I'm quite certain they can obtain higher weights, but have no evidence yet to support the theory besides TNs common record of 53 was listed as an israeli for years, and the water it came from was stocked with them.

Maybe I was thinking of Crucian Carp?

    Thanks MCW.

  11. Since we are talking about mirrors, I had a question. The round football looking mirror carps are called Israeli carp? Is that correct?

Nope. They are still mirrors, just a different body type. (an ectomorph??)

Not sure how to clearly define what an Israeli carp is, but I believe they are generally smaller in size and always fully scaled.

Anybody else feel free to chime in and correct me/make additions, etc......

    EDIT: replace ectomorph with endomorph
