welcome bulldog. lot of great info at the top of this section. one of the best ways to get started is with a can of sweet corn from the grocery store. put a couple of kernels on a #6 hook with just enough weight on the line to be able to cast. just a word of caution, DON'T LEAVE YOUR ROD UNATTENDED or you'll loose it. good luck
-
Zag, try experimenting with a 4-6" hook length. sometimes a shorter hook length will make a difference

Buster
Please show respect to your catch by holding them in a better manner....Surely you know you should never be in the standing position when taking trophy shots!!!
And where the hell is your unhooking mat???
Karl :D

Welcome zag. good answers so far. I had the same problem you describe and when I went to the bolt rig my hooks ups increased dramaticaly

I think every marina in our area has a group like that. I call em welfare carp, they don't work just hang around waiting for a hand out. come to think of it doesn't that Oz guy do that
-
have seen defect like that on several different species of fish. don't know what causes it.

Huge congratulations and alcalades Steve . still remember the great time we had with you on Stockton Lake here in the USA. when you get over here maybe we can meet up for a session again somewhere. If you remember Harry, he hasen't done much fishing this year. he's got a new girl friend and well you know how it goes

holy crap bat man what a fish CONGRATS Scott, and have your feet touched the ground yet or are you still floatin in the clouds

I'd guess that carp will swallow any edible bait, including boilies. However, I cannot recall every deep hooking one while using a bolt rig. Free lining or occaisionally slip rigs get a deep hook, but not a bolt rig. Any idea on what his set up was?
I was using a bolt rig with a 5" hook link. that's why it surprised me so much. with this set up I have never hooked one any where but in the corner of the lower lip. the hook was so deep in the throat I didn't even try to remove it.
-
macfish here. Jim, have you been spitting on your boilies before you cast them out again? I think NOT doing that was what lost the CAGI for you. Jonathan
nope didn't spit on it, though I did take a whiz in Mo's pack bait bucket. seriously has anyone else ever hooked a carp this deeply before. I think it was obvious this particular fish didn't suck the bait in and blow it out, he just gulped and swollowed
-
went carpin Sat. evening, had caught a few and then had another run. just another 8lber but when I went to unhook the fish, the boilie and the hook were almost out of sight deep in the fishes throat. 1st time I have ever seen one hooked this deep in the throat, that must have been one hungry fish
-
way to go Captain, now go get a bigger one

Hi angler, do some reading on this site on rigs and check out bolt rigs, I was having the same problem when I fist started. went to the bolt rig and my hook ups improved 100%
