Naw, I think that's a fantasy slam Bill!!- way to go!- is that a creek/river??....some nice fishes there!!!!! MO

MO carper, all of the koi were from a small public park pond....the rest were all from the same small creek which has unique carp genetics for sure.....they don't get very bog because of the creek size (biggest ever was around 14 pounds) but they make up for lack of size with unique scale patterns etc!

  3. What a heartbreaking FFF for myself and kids. After a massive chumming campaign spread out over the last few weeks, I had grown accustomed to seeing carp and koi waiting to be fed! When I set out chumming on New Years eve, there were several fish again waiting......however, overnight the cold front pushed through SE Pennsylvania and below freezing temps sent the fish packing....when we arrived at spot # 1, there was ice over 90% of the lake (none the night before) and NO fish in sight.....we moved to 4 separate venues, fished at all of them for at least an hour at each spot, and retraced our steps back to two of them....no fish ever showed, no bites in about 7 hours fishing. I guess that's fishing! I hope you all have a great year in 2015.......now to go and catch some of these fish that I fed for the last few weeks!

  4. One for Jerome

When I heard that Jerome had retired from running the FFF and that the Tournament was in jeapardy, i was concerned that my son Willy (now 17) would not get a last chance at defending his title and winning the Emperor award for the last year he was eligible to win it......Needless to say I was relieved that Frank took over as coordinator (OK thats TWO shameless plugs for votes from the judges :glare::sorry: ).

I began baiting three separate locations about two weeks before the FFF; two ponds that had produced well for us in the past and a small creek with a good population of mirrors. My baiting campaign consisted of chumming with a mixture of sweetcorn (my favorite hook bait), rice and grits with a splash of water and vanilla extract mixed in. I would hit theses spots every other day for those two weeks, often seeing a koi of two feeding, and having to resist the urge to take a shot at one!

I have four sons, Matt (23 and interested more in girls then fish), Joey (21 and more interested in his girlfriend and New Years eve Parties), Willy ( 17 and as addicted to fishing as I am), and Ben (13 and more interested in sleeping in and his new XBox 1).....Needless to say, it was only Willy and I this year.

I got up around 8am, rigged the rods and Willy and I were fishing by 9 am. It was a chilly moring in Delaware County Pennsylvania, but with highs predicted in the mid 30's, I hoped that there would be some feeding activity, especially later in the day.

We started out at a small college campus pond that receives much fishing pressure during the year, making the fish (mostly koi), extremely skittish. We had scored some nice fish here in the past, (see last years FFF) but we have struck out here on many occasions. When we arrived, I scattered a bit of chum, and immediately saw a few koi scatter for the depths.....Dam....it was gonna be one of THOSE days.... :angry2:

We fished for a while when I noticed a larger orange colored koi feeding in deeper water....willy cast towards it, and the fish hit his sweetcorn as it sank slowly to the bottom......the fish fought sluggishly due to the low water temperature (36 degrees) and while Willy fought the fish, I recognized it....it was the koi he caught in the 2007 FFF and was recaptured again by his brother Joey during the 2012 FFF!! Wow, I thought, talk about recaptures!! We landed the fish and quickly weighed and photographed it, 18 pounds 1 ounce....Willy was on the board!

We fished a little while longer at this pond, but we saw no signs of feeding......We went to the second pond location........When we arrived, we noticed that the water was muddy (Signs of feeding??!!) and we had high hopes. However after an hour or so of nothing, we decided to head home for some lunch.

After lunch we came back to the second pond, again with high hopes......as we walked up to our spot, I noticed a whitish shape in the area I had been chumming!! I thought that the slightkly warming afternoon sun might get some feeding activity going!

Willy cast out sweetcorn on our typical setup, sz 16 hook, single kernel of corn on 4 pound seaguar flourocarbon line and a 9 foot noodle rod.....the koi immediately targeted his corn, and he was hooked! This fish fought harder in the warmer water (39 degrees), as there is a culvert pipe that carries slightly warmer water into the pond (you can see the pipe in the background of one of Willys pictures). Willy landed his second fish of the day, a nice 7 pound 6 ounce koi!

After a quick picture and weighing, the fish was released back to his pond. Willy continued fishing, while I walked around the pond looking for any other signs of life. There were many ducks and geese, but no more signs of fish......As I walked back to our fishing location, WIlly started yelling that his float was swimming away under water, and ran for the rod....he was hooked up to a nice fish, that really fought well despite the water temps......After I got it in the net we realized it was a nice mirror carp, 14 pounds, 9 ounces!

We tried for a while longer, but we never saw any other signs of feeding or fish activity.......On a hunch, I decided to try the first pond again on the way home. AT this point we only had maybe 45 minutes left of light to fish.

As we arrived at the pond, we saw no fish activity. We both walked around looking, and finally i saw a group of three koi feeding along the one margin of the pond.....One of the koi was about 12 inches long, a sure candidate for the Baby Phone Award! Willy cast towards the feeding fish, and immediately they all raced for his single kernel of corn.......The bobber twitched and Willy set the hook....fish on! We knew immediately it was not the small koi, but a decent medium sized fish we had seen for a few years ...... WIlly netted the fish, and it weighed 6 pounds 1 ounce. His third koi of the day!

We decided that our hands were cold enough and called it a day with only a few minutes more of light anyway......All in all I would say WIlly did well to defend his crown! I guess we will see what the final results are......As we photographed each fish, I knew that Jerome would get a kick out of seeing Willy compete as a "Junior" for the last time......Next year, he's got some serious competition against the adults!
