A ghostie (mirror or not) is a carp with clear discolorations on its head and under the dorsal fin. Its head actually often looks like a skull due to the discolored marks. The dorsal fin discolored line is usually more visible when you play the fish than out of the water, but in Willy's fish case, we can still see it clearly.
As far as I understand, this is due to the carp having a koi in its ancestry, which seems to make sense, but is probably pure speculation.
Jerome is correct, that Ghost carp or ghosties have koi ancestry, and the koi colors "ghost" through the regular carp color..Koi hatcheries have plenty of baby ghosties that are destroyed because they are ghosts and not koi....some hatcheries sell them, but since they dont have koi vibrant colors, they are mostly destroyed..I did think that both may have been ghosts, and since there are a lot of koi in this pond, it makes sence that there are ghosts in there .....

My son Willy (13) and I fished the FFF yesterday with some surprising results. I had been pre-baiting two areas for about a week, one was a new pond where I had seen some interesting koi and mirror carp.
I had recently discovered this “new” pond, but I hadnt had a chance to fish it til last week. I had an unexpected chance to fish this pond last week, when I came across 6 koi feeding where I had baited several times before. I managed to get a really nice one (previously posted on the Pictures and Stories Section) and it was then I realized that this spot might be pretty special.
During the week leading up to the FFF, the pond had skim ice forming across it in ever-increasing size. I didnt think that was a good sign. Increasingly cold days and cold fronts in general are not usually good times to catch carp. However, in one area, there is a small creek emptying into the pond and nearby there is a drainage pipe coming from under the adjacent street with a significant flow. I noticed even though the pond was almost completely frozen, these areas remained open, indicating the incoming water was warmer....hmmmmm...this got the brain thinking that even though it was cold, the fish in this pond could be congregating near these warmer areas. Last weeks fish confirmed this.
On New Years morning, Willy and I had about an hour to fish, before my 9 year old son Ben had an indoor soccer game to attend. We headed to a smaller pond where he had caught a large koi(18+ pound) a couple years back during the FFF. When we arrived, the pond was almost completely frozen except for a few small areas adjacent to a stone wall. We immediately saw a bunch of goldfish with a few koi were in there as well. After a few minutes of light chumming we noticed some mud trails…NICE! Willy hooked and landed one of the smallest koi we had ever caught, a 10-ouncer…….We thought, this could be a Baby Phone Candidate! About a ½ hour later, Willy caught another small koi, about 2+ pounds…..WOW, I thought 2 koi in one day…..IN JANUARY….I thought that was quite an accomplishment. We did see several larger koi cruising with no interest in our offerings. So off we went to the soccer game.
We got to the newly discovered pond at around 1PM. The sun had come out in the late morning and the remaining snow was melting. The iced areas of the pond had pushed about 60-80 feet out from the incoming streams of obviously warmer water. As we walked up to the pond, we saw a few koi feeding along with some common and mirror carp!!......Willy cast his single kernel of sweetcorn (on the old sz 16 hook steelhead style) with a small bobber into the area they were feeding. Within seconds he had a strike….FISH ON! He had another koi, and it was a much bigger one! This fish gave a good fight, and Willy was impatient to land it…..He wanted this one. I was finally able to get the net under the fish after about 10 minutes on the 4pd flourocarbon, and it was a mirror koi! What a beauty. We decided that this one was worthy to bring home to our koi pond.
We hurried and got his lines back in the water. In the next few hours he landed a largemouth bass, and then caught the same largemouth 2 casts later, 2 decent size mirror carp and a turtle (IN JANUARY!). Obviously the warmer weather and the warmer influx of water really had the residents of the pond looking for food. It was surreal to see koi and carp cruise out from under the ice to eat our sweetcorn….it looked like ice-out time in Erie, Pa when the steelhead cruise the edges of the receding lake ice floes in search of minnows. I had never seen this behavior in carp or koi, so it was pretty interesting to watch. There were several fish that never ate, while others would eat sparingly then bolt back under the safety of the ice…..again weird behavior for a carp.
As it got darker, Willy spotted another koi that was eating at the edge of the ice. A few minutes later he hooked his fourth koi of the day…….unbelievable! This fish also fought well, and after about a ten minute fight I got her in the net……We took our photos and headed home as darkness settled in. Four koi and two mirror carp on January 1st 2010 all released (one into our pond
to fight another day …….What a great New Years Day and what a great FFF for us!

I went out yesterday with my kids to so some "pre-chumming" for the FFF New Years Day Tournament, and PROMISED my 9 year old Ben that I wouldnt fish ....however when we got to spot # 2 for chumming, I was amazed at what I saw. I had scoped out this "new" pond earlier in the summer and never had a chance to fish it, but I had seen 3 different koi there and even had one feeding from the surface one time! As we arrived we could see that it was a little stained from the recent rain, but at the stream entering the pond, there were SIX koi feeding
.......Well, there went my promise to Ben ......There was one especially pretty koi, which actually is a Japanese variety called an asagi, and this one had the "tancho" mark (the rising sun) on his head, making him a very valuable fish.......Snuck up to the inlet stream pipe and dropped a single kernel of sweetcorn on a sz 16 hook in his way and he slowly swam towards it and vacuumed it up...fish on!....after a nervous slow steady fight, he was mine!!...and yes he now lives at my house 
.....This is one pretty fish!If the weather cooperates, there may be some real interesting catches on New Years Day.......

yea, when it bleeds on the mat an then u pick the fish up an the blood mixs with the water on the mat...
actully the fish was dead in this photo. i stabbed it like i was told to do with all carp.

I was actually just wondering if it was from the gills or the mouth....reason being in hot weather I have seen them bleed from the gills ....................I guess from the stress of being caught?? thats all.....

I have caught 5 or 6 on sweetcorn and a few on floating bread.

Nice fish guys!!!...I would take them ANYDAY over salmon!!.......what bait were you using??.....skien or egg sacs maybe??

Here are a couple of pictures from the last three days a few friends and myself spent fishing the Salmon River in NY. It was my first time fishing for Salmon. The fishing was tough because the river was running high and you could not see the fish. We did manage some fish though, with a few really nice ones mixed in too.

Here's a few we kept. The 25 lb male - top, a 30 lb female - bottom, and the two in the middle went 16 and 18 lbs if I remember correctly.
The fishing wasn't great, but we hooked into enough fish to make it a fun trip. Most fish we landed were in the 15-20 lb range. Thanks to WG for giving me some tips on how to catch these fish

Nice Fish Jerome!!......probably a baby of a koi/carp spawning, or a common with some of the gene mutations that the Japanes began to breed to get koi centuries ago....either way what a neat fish!! Congrats

Yes Ray, they are the first additions in a long time.(last spring??).......I am working on adding a 5th pond at my house, so there is plenty of room now!

I have been kind of depressed over the poor run of AMerican shad in my local rivers, so instead of beating a dead horse and trying for nothing, I decided to do some carp fishing with my sons......I landed a mirror koi and my son Willy landed the perfect fully scaled mirror.......small but they will grow big in my pond!

Anyone know what type of Koi this is known as?
It would be a Doitsu (scaleless) Showa (black koi with red and white pattern), and in the eyes of a koi collector, almost worthless ( 200-300 bucks or so), to me it would be worth more cause its really COOL looking, love the scale pattern too, but the "real" koi people woulnt give it a second look!!......trust me, I think its BEAUTIFUL!!

Thanks Ray!......as for the koi pond, we only kept one (the mirror)....I did just complete in September my 5th pond, about 5000 gallons......I have babies from previous years growing up too, so most koi that we catch we release now....My wife calls me a "fish-hoarder" as I have 5 ponds now and 2 aquariums over 200 gallons...
