  1. Wow some awesome colour! You could probably sell that for a few grand. :D

Nice fish to all of us "regular" guys, but the Japanese would not have even let that fish live (harsh culling process on their baby koi!!).....it doesnt fit into any of the show categories....kinda like a mutt dog, its pretty enough for the regular people, but it wouldnt ever get into a koi show......still probably worth a few hundred as a "domestic koi".....I would take that fish anyday!!!

  2. I used to catch the odd one from the Charles, but haven't for over 2 years. Got into a school of huge ones on the St Lawrence in A-Bay one time, but besides these 2 places, never saw rudds (except as sold for bait in the 80's).

Never heard or saw tench up here, but would love to see some.

Tench are pretty cool looking fish Scott, reported from the Hudson river and Boston area, but thats just from reading Gov't reports....Im gonna try in Lake Erie, Presque Isle this spring for Rudd.....they apparently get them all the time there, and I have seen pics of like 18-inchers!

  3. Yesterday, I took my two youngest out for a little carp fishing in a very small stream that is 99% mirrors. We managed four between us in about 1.5 hours on sweetcorn. Willy caught a mirror that Louis and myself have caught before.......it has a bright orange spot on one side!! I believe this fish is showing pigmentation mutation which was how the Japanese originally isolated color genes in koi. Regardless, its a cool looking fish.

  4. out of interest what would a fish like that be worth? i bet there are millons of dollars swimming around in the waikato river alone!

Unless they are absolutely perfect and Japanese varieties, they are considered domestic koi and valued at 20-50 dollars (US) a pound....

  5. Thanks for all the replies....glad you liked it!!

As for the questions.....I think I have 40 adult sized koi now (most 3 to 15 pounds with 2 over 20 pounds) and 12 mirror carp, plus a bunch of small ones....I need to take some pics to post of them eating....it is impressive!! WIth the exception of one, they are all considered "domestic" koi and are worth hundreds, not thousands of dollars each, but to me they are priceless!!

As for it being female, I wont be 100 positive til spring spawning time, but based on its body shape, smaller pectoral fins, etc, My guess is that its a female.

Jerome, wish I could catch one during the FFF......I wish I could catch one every day of the week!!!....I will try though!!.....it wont be easy!!

  6. CONGRATS Starless Dragon......glad to see you finally caught one!!...I know you had said you were really interested in them...now you gotta build a poind at your house to house it next time you catch it!!

The koi is a Tancho based on the red spot on the head, its supposed to represent the rising sun (the symbol of Japan......the Japanese love them). The koi has black markings also and a red spot near its tail classifying it as a Sanke....more correctly a Tancho Sanke. The value of the fish is based on many characteristics, but its really not a "show koi" so dont think you released $6500!!, my guess would be more like $500-$800 bucks......Dont get me wrong, it is a fantastic fish, and like all the koi that I catch, I consider them all PRICELESS. Only a VERY SELECT few are worth that much money....they literally have to be PERFECT in every way to be considered show quality.......Hell, I just like them no matter what they look like!!!.

Great job!!.....what did you catch it on??

BTW, you want a good fight.....switch to 4 pound line!!! (thats all I use)

  7. Last Friday I had a hunch that with all of the warm weather we have been having, one of the most elusive black and white koi I have ever seen might be feeding. This particular koi I have been watching for over 2 years and in November I actually hooked the fish and lost it .....TWICE!!!...both times the hook just pulled out!!!...after I lost it the second time the koi moved from its hiding spot and would just sit in the middle of the creek. If I approached the creek, it would take off and disappear hundreds of yards upstream!!....I had turned it into a "psycho-koi", and it wasnt looking good to catch it.

So on Friday, I saw it had schooled with a bunch of carp (mirror and commons) that were laying under a fallen tree branch. I chummed them with some sweet corn, then left and fished downstream for about 30 minutes for another very spooky koi.....no luck there, so I headed upstream to the spot with the black and white koi.....I hid behind a tree and chummed the little school of carp again. I noticed that the koi actually was feeding!! So I crawled down the bank and hid behind another large tree. I watched as the koi fed competitively with the other carp. I dropped the single kernel of corn right in front of the koi and watched as it moved towards the bait. I couldnt actually see my bait as it went between two small rocks, but as the koi fed in the area, I watched it hesitate and guessed correctly that it had taken the bait!! As I set the hook, the koi actually jumped out of the water and headed upstream about 150+ feet in one run! This koi fought as hard as any steelhead and actually made about 7 big runs, with another jump thrown in (Thank God I use my noodle rod!)...This was the longest I have tried to catch a koi without success.....but as you can see in the picture, its a female, its got a great color pattern and is also a mirror. It will make a great breeder. By the way, the next day in my pond it was eating off the surface 5 feet in front of me with the other koi!!! Its amazing how quickly they revert back to feeding with the other koi after being in the wild and extremely spooky for years......

  8. Starless Dragon, the shiny scales are called Gin-Rin , they are one of the things that koi breeders look for in several types of koi breeds. That carp definitely has koi blood in it, as seen on the color in its head, kinda like a ghost koi, but a little prettier with the gin-rin scales and the yellow color in the head. Really cool fish!!

ncarolinacarper, if you do a search for my topics (WG666666), I have several pictures of koi that I have caught.....

  9. After catching a koi on Friday and spotting 2 others at a local "trout stream", my two little guys (Ben 5 and Willy 9) went out on Monday to see if the remaining two koi were willing to bite. Chummed with corn and both koi as well as the carp in the pool started eating. After the big rains, it appeared that they were definitely on the feed. Standard 4pound Seaguar flouro and sz. 16 hook worked. Ben got the bigger of the 2 remaining koi and was really happy!!! This was one of the koi that was really spooked last Friday when I got # 1 from this spot, but appeared it less spooky this time............two down, one to go...............

  10. Matts right!!.....they are my babies.......plans for the pond expansion are in place, now I just need to get the equipment in for digging....its planned for this Fall/Winter.....I have about 35 bigger koi ranging from 3 pounds up to 23 pounds+, with about 15 Israeli-type mirror carp, and about 20 6-8 inchers and about 100+ babies in the 1 inch range that are koi/mirror hybrids that were spawned in my pond this July. It is getting crowded, so expansion is necessary. I dont know why they keep showing up in the streams, but it seems there are 2 reasons, release from home ponds after they get too big, or escapees during flooding that we have had this year......either way, I 'll take it!!...you could tell these fish were hungry, as they ate sweetcorn right away, and the one I caught yesterday was eating pellets this morning, like he had never left its pond!!

  11. After work today stopped at a local trout stream I havent looked in months to see if the "meat hole" (carp hole) had any koi visitors, I had this hunch to check this spot before the upcoming predicted rain from Ernesto. ......over the years the big "meat hole" where they stock trout has been home to a koi or 2, especially after a big rain....and since I havent checked in a while, I thought it might be good. As I walked to the meathole, I could see 3 koi mixed in with the small school of commons and 1 mirror that have lived there for years....my hunch was right!!....Chummed the hole with sweetcorn and all the carp and 2 of the 3 koi started eating......got the biggest one on the first cast!!.....he was no "smart" koi, but obviously hungry!....one of the other koi ate very selectively, but was wise to my bait when I casted near it.....oh well, looks like I have 2 more to drive me insane until I catch them!!
