How long will the bread last on the hook? Meaning....How often should we check if the hookbait is still good to go?

From what I noticed, pending on how you put the bread on the hook will determine that. At the last MA Ice Fishin I was pinching the bread more towards the eye of the hook keeping the rest of the bread a little loose at the hook point. Even tho I didnt get any bites, the bread never came off no matter how many times I checked my rig.
