  2. As for the Big 20 format tournament that is being held by Bass Pro, it is important to look at the numbers. In 2014 they harvested 40,00 pounds of fish - that included carp, grass carp, buffalo, and possibly some Asian carp. I was not able to locate a precise breakdown. That took place on two lakes that combine for 88,0000 acres. That is a harvest of only one-half pound per acre. Assuming a low density of 100 lbs per acre, that is less than one-half of one percent of the total carp population. I think it is unrealistic to believe that they even made a measurable dent in the amount of carp or even large carp. Their actions neither helped not hurt the fishery.

I actually think that there are some small waters, perhaps under 50 acres or so, where if enough carp fishermen were present, that selective harvest could do a great deal to improve the size structure of carp. One might encourage harvest of all carp below a certain size. This has been successfully done on many waters for many types of fish, but a lot people are resistant to even discussing the harvest of any carp of any size.

  3. Today, I caught the fattest mirror with the biggest scales that I have ever seen. The fish did not fight very well and a careful look yields a slight deformity in the tail area. The fish measured 26" and weighed 14 lb 2 oz. The great thing is that this fish is a recapture from October of 2009 when she measured between 14" to 16" and weighed 2 to 3 lbs. I've caught bigger mirrors, but none that were this fat. Catch-and-release works.

  4. I hope that I can catch a few like that. Those are super-thick fish. I'm jealous.

A 23 lb average is awesome. I am developing a law (I'm coining it after my last name: Bates' Law) which states that the maximum size carp in a body of water is slightly more than double that of the average sized carp. Of course, the sample size has to be sufficient, say 50 or more carp. 23 x 2.25 = 51.75 lbs. I hope you catch that monster.
