  1. Buckeye Bob back as the State Chair, sounds like all is right in the world. I just wish I had more time in order to start showing up at the events again. There is nobody more dedicated to the actual goals of CAG then this person, I always learned something new everytime I fish with him.

I wanted to spend sometime with the old crew last year at East Harbor but that weather was the worst I have ever seen. We ended up trying to take a walleye charter out in that stuff and ended up hitting a reef way out there, I spent the rest of the weekend figuring out repairs on a boat to get it running for next weekend. That is the second worst I have seen the harbor, the worst was late fall this past year as well. Freak weather all year last year, I hope it is better this year.

  2. Aaaah Dylan that was a good time, the rangers where so excited to have us there I think they hung out with us the whole weekend and even let us drive our cars to the spots to deliver and pick up gear. As Bob says a lot of fish but pretty small, I seem to remember somebody reeling thier rods in for the night and left the bait hanging out of the water to wake up and find his pole missing.

I agree with Bob about below the damn away being pretty good for teen fish, I have also fished just up from where it enters the Musky as well. I found that Van Dams (spelling) bait in anise flavor was really hot in that area. Later on in the summer I always did well with spicier baits like Hot Cin dip on maize with a ground corn pack. My Brother in law lives in the area so if we go fishing this is the area we always go.

Schedule looks good, I am up in East Harbor all the time anymore so I will try and stop by and say hi the weekend you are all up there. Unfortunately it is a busy time for me up there so I doubt I will be doing any carp fishing but I may bring the traveling gear just in case. Unfortunately I got into walleye fishing a little too much and it has really conflicted with any carp fishing I want to do. It seems if I am not taking trips out I am working on boats anymore. Hope to see a few of you in a few weeks, been a long time since I hung out with some of you.

  3. Back in the days, we used to post threads about the fish ins or just a group of folks going carping in the state of Ohio on other fishing site. Now I don't see anything there. I know alot of folks in Ohio that are interested in our sport but don't know where to start. All it takes for those of you who are going to fish anywhere public is to go post something there(OGF). I used to do that many years ago and had many people come fishing with me. Alot of them got hooked on carping and went ahead to buy alarms and pods. Some even join the club. Some just comes out whenever I'm fishing because they wanting to learn more. Nowadays I see no interaction with the local fishing website. This could help Ohio fish in to be better and having larger turnout.

I'm just saying'. I know I'm no longer a member of CAG anymore and have no say in all this. Just wanted to let ya know that there are other resources out there to get more folks interested in our sport.

    Ak

What is going on Ak, how are things going in Thailand. How is Golden retriever doing, get to fish much anymore?

Not sure what is happening over on OGF, the community over there just has not felt the same as it was when it first got started, I know I hardly go there anymore, sort of like it is here now. I have heard places like facebook are killing the typical messageboard, don't know if that is true since I do not have a facebook account but maybe that is an avenue some people could try.

  4. Quick question:

How do you hide money from a Hippie???

I will admit in my younger more violent years I had a strong distaste for hippies and anything a part of that late 80's early 90's dead head scene. It seems they took over the schools for a while, and thier drugs they where getting where not all that good anyways.

Now in my latter years I have some friends that are hippies and they are not a bad lot really. One has a place next to my trailer up on Erie and I get a kick out of his fascination with burning things. We do any work at all on the trailer he will be there asking for the scrap wood to burn. Maye I should take him carp fishing sometime while I am up there, if I can ever get him away from his fire pit.

    Answer:Put It Under The Soap

  5. Ohio's first fish-in is the weekend of April 8 at East Harbor State Park. I am not sure how far away from Toledo Ohio you are but this about 33-45 minutes away from there. Normally a good turnout from Friday night to Sunday afternoon. I think I remember a couple people coming from MI last year to fish with us at that event.

It will be a good chance to meet some people and get a good idea at what everybody is using as far as rigs, baits and equipment. We have a good mix of full out euro guys, paylaking styles, south african all the way to just good old free lining doughballs and bread. It had been a really good time the last couple of years, it is a little cold but the fish are there and a lot of us will be camping. Last year they where a little on the small size with only a few over 20 lb fish, but normally they catch bigger ones at this time of the year at that bay. Hope to see you there more info at

    CagOhio

You do not have to be a member to fish at Ohio's fish ins so if you have any friends or family who want to come along bring them.

  6. Yeah it was a good show, they where out there with MadRiver Outfitters from Columbus Ohio. They are a really good fly shop that has been promoting carp fly-fishing like crazy around here. They even have a DVD out dedicated to fishing for carp, I think Shawn picked one up from them at the Ohio Sportman show. They had a nice booth set up with a 25 Lb carp replica set up to grab everybodys attention.

Here is the link to thier video page where you can pick up a copy of that DVD, I have not seen it yet personally but I heard it is really good.

    MadRivers Videos

I know at the last show we had a couple of guys that had been turned on to carping through MadRiver show up at our booth to learn more about fishing for them. Here is thier homepage if you are interested in some of thier carp flies. They do have a few, one of thier guys showed up at a Fish-In we had and gave us a lecture and demo on fly fishing. The fly that stood out the most was one made to look like a couple blades of grass to get grass carp.

  7. Louis I pretty much do the same thing but instead of using a normal hook, I will use a jighead. That way once you straightened the hook out (bankside with fishing pliers) you have a nice piece of lead to grab while you are using the baiting needle. Cheap and effective.

  8. It is one of the better Co-Polymer lines out there, not sure what co-polymer means exactly but it seems to hold up to abrasions for its size a lot better then most mono lines. I think I recall a couple of Flathead guys turned a couple of us on to it. They use it a lot fishing for very large and powerful fish that like to make homes in the nastiest log jams you can find.

Not saying it is head and shoulders better then anything else out there, but for the price, if I was faced with landing that fish of a lifetime on lighter lines ( I don't use heavy braids except for shock leader ) I would feel a lot better with mean Green on.

  9. Throughout the wind the bite was not all that bad, Tim and I had many bites all night long all though we missed them due to cutoffs, I was really getting frustrated at this point.

Now wait a minute... I didn't get cutoff once. I still have the same clips and swivels on the rods that have been on there since the few bad swivels I had at East Harbor in APRIL. The 30# power pro (mainline) held up yet again. My problem was keeping the fish hooked. I would hear the alarm, get my hands out of my toasty sleeping bag and pull back with a fish on. Then I would continue to play the fish until totally out of my bag and COLD. This is when those pesky fish would decide to end the fun (and NO my drag is not to tight).

My bad Tim, I saw you getting runs Saturday night but not getting any in, I assumed you where having the same problems as me.

  10. “That Which Does Not Kill Me Makes Me Stronger”

A Quote to live by this past weekend at the year-end Alum Creek Carp-In. This was event full off rain, sleet, cold, winds in excess of 30 mph, and of course carp. Before I start I would like to thanks everybody who came out and braved the weather, this was about as bad as it gets. Here is the list of the “Xtreme Eighteen” that fished the event.

Ak aka CarppieLooker, Sean aka Miso_Ohio, Tim aka Tim412, Tim aka TimJC, Dick aka 10BoilieDick, Craig aka Cypry, Phil aka RadaarPhl, Clayton aka CWCarper & fiancée Bambi, Rick aka CarpioHunter, Brian the South African, Mike aka Carpless & future Brother-n-Law Jeremy, John aka CarpChaser, Justin aka CarperBoy, Rick aka Catking, Jack aka Flathunter & son Steven

I would also like to put a kind word on all Brollies and Bivvies used this weekend, every single one of them from Fox, X2, Chub Tackle and Duck Blinds held up brilliantly under extreme winds and weather conditions.

Ak arrived way too early Friday as usual, I think he was there around 10 AM, reports from him was it was windy as heck. Anyways I finished loading the old Jeep and headed up there only to arrive around 12:30. Ak was still setting up, I borrowed his cart and got my gear out there, and also set up Shawn Woerlein’s brolly (thanks for letting me borrow it), a very difficult task in the 10 mph winds. After setting up we both baited a little and then sat down to a cold one awaiting the magical 3 Pm when the event officially starts. At this point I was a little afraid of a poor turnout due to the weather.

3 pm comes and goes and our lines are in the water, meanwhile Tim from PA shows up and starts to set up, he had a new Chub Tackle Cyclone EZ brolly, it was great, everybody should check them out. Very soon afterwards Tim from Cincy, Dick of 10 boilie fame and Craig (the reigning Ohio Carp King) show up and set-up. While this is all going on AK starts landing the fish pretty consistently. A little later Phil shows up to setup for the next day, and Clayton and Bambi show up. The evening has been set with 8 carpers on the bank and 6 staying the night, the bank was starting to fill up with Brollies.

The night went on with the winds picking up a little and on and off showers, AK quickly lead the way with something like 11 carp landed, followed by Craig who landed a bunch as well. Most other people landed at least one this night as well. It didn’t take long, at about 9 PM AK lands the big one of the event and season at 21.5 Lbs, he followed this one up much later with a 19.5 Lb fish, he also landed a nice 8 lb mirror at this time the only one of the event. Craig landed a bunch of low teen fish out on the point; this was about the average size of the fish caught. I experienced a few problems with the zebras and bumped up the shock to 80 Lb power Pro. Lots of runs and a lot of missed fish that night, and a lot of false alarms due to the wind. Rick from Indy showed up in the middle of the night, he set-up and then went to the truck to wait out the weather. Brian also showed up and sets up and chums a swim, then heads for home to give it a go the next day. Around 10:30 Ak heats up some Chicken Vegetable stew to warm everybody up, it was tasty and hot.

Saturday morning, came about to very calm conditions, I started to think to myself that the weatherman was wrong until the dark clouds appeared in the distance. Then came the rain, which quickly turned to sleet about half the size of a pea. We had about 5 sleet storms of different degrees from morning to about 11 AM, meanwhile Mike, Jeremy, Catking, John and Justin show up and setup and fish. The weather was nasty but at least the winds where somewhat manageable at around 10 mph. Then Jack and Steven show up and the wind decides to up the ante, we are talking wind at around 15-20 with gusts well over 30, I was waiting for Brollies to go flying everywhere, but they all held. We also had on and off showers at this time as well as temps in the low 40’s, we are talking Xtreme Carping here folks. I have fished in the rain, the snow and heat waves but this was plain nuts. During this time not too many fish if any where landed, mainly Craig and Brian where catching, and again there was a lot of missed fish due to the mussels.

3:30 Pm Saturday, AK has a TV setup in a shelter so we can all watch Ohio State get embarrassed in Iowa, meanwhile we start getting the food ready. Around 4:30 the call for soups on went out and carpers started braving the walk from “Bivvy City” to the shelter house, I also get the call that Tim from PA is landing a fish at this time. After we all enjoy a good hearty meal of BBQ Hot Sausages, Meatloaf sandwiches, Scalloped Potatoes, Pickled and Deviled Eggs, Chips, and Choc & Lemon sheet cakes it was time for the raffle drawing and next years venue discussion’s. I will let Shawn give out the official results but I will let everybody know that the CarperBoy has a new rod and reel, Carpless a new landing mat and RodMan is the luckiest man alive. After the venues discussion was complete everybody helped clean up and we went back to carping around 7 PM.

Most of us started baiting the swims when an amazing thing happened, the winds died down, it was beautiful, perfect (all though cold) carping weather. There was not a ripple on the water; Ak reels in a quick 3 fish and a few other people landed some fish as well. A few people went home and I can’t say I blame them. After all was said and done Craig, Ak, Tim & Tim, John and Justin stayed out the night. There where a few runs in the night but again a lot of missed chances where fish where not there when you got to the rod. Meanwhile I doze off only to be awaken around 1:30 to a screaming run, I slid down to my pod and pick up the rod and then nothing, sliced clean, this became my routine throughout the night, I must have had my bait right at the bottom of a drop and I was getting sliced on the edge. The same thing was happening to TimJC throughout the night.

There I am sitting in the Brolly enjoying a snooze when out of nowhere I am awaken by one of the hardest and coldest winds we have had all weekend. The front of the Brolly was almost touching the ground; I can see huge swells in the water in front of me as the wind pushed it, I checked the time and it was 1:55 AM. The wind went on and off like this all night, at this time Tim412 and Ak decided to call it a night and head to the cars, I remember Ak saying something while he walked by me to the effect “You Guys Are Friggen Crazy”. Throughout the wind the bite was not all that bad, Tim and I had many bites all night long all though we missed them due to cutoffs, I was really getting frustrated at this point.

By next morning the clouds where cleared and the wind was down, but still there and bitterly cold. I come to find out the John had landed three fish throughout the night in the wind, including one on Justin’s pole that may have been bigger then AK’s 21.5. Unfortunately they didn’t get it weighed, makes you wonder what might of been if he would of, they where a distance from us and I can understand not wanting to make the run to get me in all of that wind. The morning up to the end of the event at noon Sunday was a nice clear sky, with some cold wind, but by far the nicest weather of the event. The problem with Zebra Mussel infested waters is they are very clear, and a clear sky normally means no fish and that held true throughout the morning. At noon we all packed it in, I handed AK his plaque for the Ohio carp King (I am thinking about having a crown made because it would look funny on him) and everybody headed their separate ways.

Sitting here thinking back on the event, it is like most events I have been too where the weather was rough. You hated being there, but you also develop some of your fondest memories from these events. There is something about going through this with other like-minded anglers that kind of bonds everybody together in friendship. I will always remember, hanging around AK’s Bivvy and eating veggie stew at 10:30 at night Friday. Also zipping out of that sleeping bag and stumbling down the rocks (almost in the water) to my pod in the middle of the night, only to get sliced off again. Also tying a new rig around 6 AM in my Bivvy Sunday morning in all that wind only to have Craig poke his head in and say, hey you want to get a picture of the 17 I just caught. Also having a beer with Tim412 in my Bivvy with the heater going talking about carping in general. Brian landing that carp on his 16-foot single piece rod in the middle of the afternoon on Saturday. Watching the Buckeyes get demolished (not just beaten) by Iowa Saturday afternoon. Watching a young carper named Justin win a 12-foot Warrior Rod and Shimano 4500 reel in the raffle. Trying to setup a shelter for Clayton and Bambi with a tarp and some posts, it sort of worked. Catking not landing a single fish (sorry I had to throw that one in there). Yelling back and forth at TimJC all night while laying in the Bivvy about how warm you can get in a sleeping bag with the help of a little natural gas from those pickled eggs. The site of all those Bivvies set up on the breaker wall, something you don’t see too often in the USA, as Craig stated, “it almost feels like I am back in England”. There are many more memories then this but I have probably bored you with this many already so I will let the other members of the “Xtreme Eighteen” post them if they want.

Tight Lines, Best Wishes, And Cheers To The Next Session

    Sean Lehman aka Miso_Ohio

PS: Sorry for the Novel, Loads of Pics to follow

  11. Shawn,

No need for the check, I got all of that covered, my main chum is range cubes and field corn, neither of which cost very much. Now the boilies I would be interested in, it is tough trying to hand roll 7 kilos of boilies like I did this past week, plus your foodsource should fatten them fish up even more.

  12. good show boys :D what baits were you useing?

have you been pre-baiting with maize at all,i ask

as iam curious to how the fish acted toward it

(if you did) on the new water.

    Greg,

Corn was a tough sell at first but it is getting better, Shawns two carp came on corn. I have been chumming this swim about 2-3 times a week with about 5 gallons of corn and a couple pounds of range cubes amd sometimes a few kilos of boilies each and every time. I have been doing this for about 4 weeks now and I plan on continuing to do the same at least two times a week for the future.

I have concentrated the chumming to this area which is about 10 yards off the shore, in about a 40 yards by 60 yard rectangle to try and develop and establish feeding zone for them that they want to check out every night. In this zone it is mostly the shallow at anywhere from 4 foot to 12 foot, lots of good structure for them, and also I do throw a share out over the main drop off which goes down to a ledge about 24 foot down, kind of of a staging area for the fish.

Week one I chummed like a mad man, no fishing what so ever. On the third day of chumming I could still see just about every peice of corn I threw out there in the shallows. After 5 days since the first day I don't think a single fish had touched any of it.

Week two, this was a good 4-5 days after my last chum (shnizzle) and most of the previous weeks chum appeared to be gone but you could still see small amount of it there. Same results by the last day of chumming, all the chum was out there and didn't appear to be touched.

Week three, this time all of the previous weeks chum appeared to have been eaten. Same results as in previous weeks though nothing touched the chum throughout the week. Saturday we decided to give it whirl and fish it through part of a day. Saturday morning the chum was gone, they must of fed the nigth before, and you could see fish rolling, and we even spotted a huge carp patrolling the area right by us maybe 5 feet from the shore (looking for corn ??). Results, Fishinchick got that nice 19 Lber off of the 24 foot ledge.

Week four, all of the chum was gone the next day after chumming, even the boilies, don't know if it was all carp or the catfish may be helping as well because they seem to have taken a liking to boilies, all though not corn yet. Tpet and I did an all nighter Friday night and the result you can see above. I had two monsterous runs on chicken liver that defeated my trusty Ultra Light off of the ledge early in the evening. Then I landed a small carp on chicken liver, then the cats moved in and I was slaying them on boilies and liver. Shawn in the shallows in about 8 foot of water on a drop off, landed first a large cat on foodsource boilies, Then he landed those two carp on corn. one of them was pooping out chummed boilies on the mat so they are eating them.

Hope that helps, I think before long the feed will just become like clockwork on these fish. By the way, after the slugish strange fight Nicole had with that first fish, they now fight ever bit as hard as river fish, those runs or incredible, I know Shawn was having a real tough time trying to turn them.

  13. Yeah a good time and a typical night for me, the carp came on my catfish baits and the catfish came on my carp baits :D ???

Night started out innocently enough with me throwing out popped up corn on one pole and monster crab boilie on another and tossing them out on the ledge. I also decided to see if any channels where in the area so I threw out a chunk of liver on the Ultra Light. 40 mintues later the Ultra Light was screaming, I assumed it was a channel so I didn't do much to hook it, it spit and I brought in two huge carp scales on the hook.

Great I am dealing with carp so I cast back out and 30 minutes later another run, this time I set the hook. It kept going and going and going, so I started thinking I was going to run out of line, bad move on my part, with over half a spoool left I cranked another half turn on the drag and the 6 pound test went pop :D

Oh well I didn't get an over 20 carp like I wanted too, but I did catch the small runt of the liter carp and a ton of catfish on boilies so I had a good time.

  14. Hey Mike long time no see, was hoping to see you down at CFD a couple of weeks ago. I see where you and Cypry have hit a few spots, have you guys had any luck at Hoover ? This spot is a long ways from fishable yet, it is looking like they have no shortage of good food and there doen't seem to be an over population of them in here. For right now I am concentrating on chumming the waters and lots of chum at that, I hope to accomplish:

1: First the carp need to associate the flats we are fishin as a feeding ground.

2: Associate the baits we use as good safe baits (If the first time a carp try's corn or a boilie they get a hook in them, it may take a while for them to trust it again)

3: Figure out thier feeding pattern (will they come into the shallows to feed during the daytime or only at night or in the morning, how well do they feed in the deep water)

4: Figure out what they are feeding on and where it is located at in this quarry

I hate to be shelfish but I am treating this as a golden opportunity to learn as much as I can about the behaviour of carp in this kind of enviroment. I have cliffs I can sit up on and watch after a good round of chumming (shizzling) and see what is happening down there.

Once we get these fish feeding and get a better idea of the size we have here we will let everybody know where this place is at exactly, all I will ask is when you go is to make sure it is left cleaner then when you arrived. The people who live around there and the owners are a little fed up with kids getting in there and partying and trashing the place. For now it is sort of open to the public but that could be taken away if the place gets any more trashed and really I couldn't blame them at all. I bring a bag with me and pick up other peoples trash just about everytime I go down there.

There are a ton of old quarry's around this area, I plan on picking them off one by one, these are little diamonds in the rough.

  15. Well the best flavor I have for that is monster crab, I guess it is time to make the boilies :D I may be giving it another whirl this friday night for a quick all nighter. Nothing like a sleeping under the stars and then being shocked awake by the scream of a naughty bite alarm. Let me know if you are up for it.

As the saying goes it is time again to "shizzle my dizzle"

  16. Yes it was a good time even though I blanked :D The chick schooled us both, what can you do about it.

That picture doesn't do that fish justice that was a wide fish, these fish are getting a good feed going in that place. When I first saw it come over the drop off into the shallow water, I though "oh how cute a nice low teen fish" until it got closer and I saw how wide its head and body was. Next fish caught there is getting a head on pic taken.

Strange body of water, I guessing the big boys will move in on the night bite. I prebaited this area with field corn and range cubes for three days prior to this day. It didn't appear anything touched the corn until the day we showed up to fish, there where carp surfacing everywhere in the shallows. Even saw one cruise right by us close to shore and not a single one we saw was shorter then the one that was caught, in fact most where much larger. I am not sure if the spodding spooked them off or was it just that time of day that they all decide to move deep.

Will this place produce a 30 or maybe a 40 for us this year, who knows. I can say that the fish I saw surfacing, rolling a tail splashing out there sure got my attention, we just got to figure out how to catch them.

Here is another shot of that fish caught at That Place that may be better suited for an avatar.

  17. Welcome mom, seen your posts over on OhFishing.com, liked the one about the carp almost killing you, glad to see you got it at last :D Lots of good info here, get in touch with some of the members out in NY and fish with them, they will open your eyes to a whole other world of carp fishing.
