  3. Tres Flores’s ATC

Well this is the second ATC that my son and I have participated in, the first being last year. This year’s ATC was a lot more challenging that last years. The weather was a very big factor this year than the previous year.

    Day one, Eilers Park Swim

On Friday morning we woke up to fog, or so we thought. We meet everyone again in the lobby of the Wyndham and waited in anticipation as to the peg that we would get. Our drawing order number was 15 out of 17 third to last in the order to draw on the first day but third to draw on the second day. Edmen drew Eilers park swim one of the furthest of the event.

Well needless to say we got lost but once we did a U turn we found what we were looking for. Once there I did some reconacense and got lost again, to the left of the walkway is a running/walking path, so I went left, looking down at the lake thinking we were going to need to rappel down 20 feet to our swim and I had forgotten my rope at home. A quick call got me back on track apparently I was to turn right and about 10 yards to the right there are some stairs that lead you to a small dock. So now it’s back up to the truck for our fishing stuff. It is still foggy and very dark.

Once down at the dock we realize that the trees will only allow for a restricted area for us to cast from. Pods up, rods in the water and now we wait. Our first fish came about 8am, what I perceive to be a GIANT and make a frantic call to Chad and tell him Edmen just caught the new Texas Jr. Record! Well the fish came in at about 22 pounds no giant and no record. The flavor of choice was a proto-type Spiced Tutti Frutti boilie fished in PVA mesh with chopped boilies.

Once the fog lifted we saw that we had overcast skys, assuming that this would burn off as the day wore on. Boy was I wrong, it started as a drizzle then it stopped then it drizzled again and again and again. During the time it was drizzling we changed out our baits and kept trying different baits to trigger a bite or establish some sort of pattern. That is when I heard it, no not my alarms but something else, thunder! That is when it let loose, the skies opened up and it started to pore and I was caught in the middle of it all. Edmen was in the truck retrieving something so he was out of harm’s way. While I was left out on the dock with nothing for shelter not even the trees could offer anything in the way of shelter. The only thing that was keeping the rain off of me was the fold up chair that I flipped over to cover my head. Not a good thing to do during a thunder storm. After what seemed like a life time of being a lightning rod, it finally settled down.

After the rain had stopped we get a run, FISH ON (TF Tutti Frutti Maize)! Just our luck the fish gets off. So I console myself by saying that is was a small one anyway. Then it all went silent! We got another hit on our Pineapple x2 (we used two different types of pineapple flavoring) maize but no hook up. At about 5:30 in the afternoon we get another violent strike on the TF Tutti Frutti Maize, but no hook up. At about 6:30 we start taking al of the unnecessary equipment up to the truck. The only thing left is our rod pods, rods and hold all’s. Then right at 6:58 we get a solid run on the TF Tutti Frutti maize, FISH ON! We call everybody to inform them that we have a last minute fish. Once the fish was weighed in, it came in at about 16 pounds. Not bad we both caught a fish.

The rest of the night I spent retying all of our rigs, I could not sleep in anticipation of what would come next.

    Day two, Melrose swim.

We awoke to the screeching howl of a bitterly cold and frigid wind, boy am I glad that I decided to bring along our jackets. Well we did not feel too bad after day one, several of the other teams blanked while we had managed t catch two.

The good thing was that we did not have to travel very far to get to our swim. Upon driving to the Melrose swim I got out and surveyed the area for a good spot, and in my opinion we found one. We could set up the pods on either side of the little dock and use the dock as a casting, fighting and netting platform. This would be the spot that we would go for broke and make our bid to be in the top half of the field.

Casting out was going to be a real problem seeing as the wind was hitting us from the left and it was coming in hard and fast. The strategy was simple, use what had worked for us the day before, Tres Flores Tutti Frutti Maize fished on 8 – 10 inch hook links fished with our Signature Series Method Mix. Once all our equipment was at bank side, we got the rods set in the pods and having all the lines in the water baited up with our Tutti Frutti maize. I could not wait for the sunrise it could not come soon enough for me, thinking that once the sun was up that it wound warm up, boy was I wrong!

Being carp fishers yourselves you know that it can be an exhausting getting your gear to the bank. Edmen needed some R&R after helping bring our gear to our spot and went to sleep huddled between both rod carryalls (Thanks Andy at Resistance Tackle). In retrospect I wish that I would have taken a picture of that. Now it was time to wait for the sounds of life in our swim, but with the winds and the small plants next to our pods the alarms kept sounding with beep after beep after beep.

FISH ON! It was on one of the rods on the right side of the dock. As I leaned into it, it felt heavy but there was a problem it appeared that the fish was in a snag. The fish was still on but then after a brief fight I could no longer feel the fish I thought I had lost it. Then that thump of the rod tip, FISH STILL ON! It had worked its self loose. I was YELLING for Edmen to wake up and get the net. It was a lovely 28 pounder I was stoked at our prospects of bigger fish.

Edmen’s first Buffalo (he caught all three of our buffs) came in at 16 and change, I was set to just toss it back in after some quick pictures but Edmen said that no buffs had been weighed in at all. A quick call to Chad confirmed that, and Edmen was leading the Biggest Buffalo contest. We got the news later on in the day that a slightly bigger Buff had been caught, Edmen was devastated. But he still had a new PB Buff.

The good thing about fishing the Tres Flores way is it is one for all and all for one. Let me explain, yes we have six rods out in the water but they are our six rods, not my rods and your rods. We flip a coin to see who gets first fish, last year I won the toss which resulted in the Biggest Carp Tilde so this year Edmen got first fish on day one. We try to re-bait every hour to hour and a half. I just do not like the thought of leaving a bait out there for hours on end. Fresh method mix and bait if needed.

BEEP BEEP BEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEP the alarm goes crazy Edmen looks at me with those puppy dog brown eyes and I tell him go ahead. It seems to be a nice fish Edmen has gotten very good at playing the fish, as it draws near I can see that it is a Buffalo. As I try to net him I realize just how big the fish is and I told him he probably retaken the led in the Biggest Buff again. I could beardy get him in the net in fact most of the fishes bake end was sticking out. It weighed in at 36 pounds a new PB. The surprising thing was that this Buff came on 6 hair rigged kernels of our Tutti Frutti maize, I guess it really wanted it since this is not their usual behavior.

At one point we had a nice gentlemen from the TDPW (Texas Department of Parks and Wildlife), who wanted to get some footage of the Buff and Edmen. While he was there we managed to catch a couple of other fish for him to film. It was about 3pm and time was running out, so we got the remaining bait that we had left and made 40 method balls and proceed in carpet bombing the area. We caught several other fish and I manage to bring in our last fish of the competition. We had only lost one fish today not bad.

    post-3061-1239815401.jpg

All in all we ended up catching 7 nice Carp, 3 Buffalo and 1 catfish on day two. Overall it would be nine Carp down three from last year, three Buffalo up three from last year.

It was not until the award ceremony that Chad informed us that the Melrose swim has never produced fish in that number before, another first for Team Tres Flores. I meet several new faces at this year’s ATC and made some new friends.

    post-3061-1239815616.jpg

We end up in sixth place overall, fifth place in the top four fish and Biggest Buff to boot, not too shabby. We have proven that our baits catch fish and most importantly, if you want to get the “RUNS” give our baits a try.

  4. This is what we had last year:

Who wants in on a friendly ATC side bet? . How does $50.00 a team sound.

We could have "Highest Total Weight" for a team gets 65% of the Pot and the "Big Fish" (Carp)would net 35% of the pot. I'm open to suggestions. I will collect all funds at the corn boil.

Teams that want in, please add a post and I will add your name to this list. Remember you have to be in it to win it Example: 14 teams at $50.00 = $700.00, $455.00 Total Weight, $245.00 for Big Fish

Before you bet please check your odds at the ATC Odds thread Here is a chance to win back some gas, food and toll money.

    What do you all think?

    Eddie

  5. I have just placed an order for Robin Red, it should be here by month’s end.

So Red Demon Blood V2 boilies and Tres Flores Texas Reds will be available soon.

Might also sell some Rodin Red in 8oz and 1 pound packages.
