Hi Mick:
I live and fishing in Santa Cruz so I get to be part of North and South. Santa Cruz may be 1 degree warmer than Clear Lake but I get to sleep in my own bed after fishing.
Jeff
But you could get a savage ocean breeze too

Well done, i ended up at that other reservoir on sunday and got a pair of stevens and no carp LOL
-
Imagine the looks in the elevator when a bunch of carp anglers start going in and out of there!
-
Hard one to top, nice pics and that FSM is incredible.

I know this is a little off topic so applogies in advance, its more about carp waryness,on a lot of UK waters that i fished/new about carp were generally wary of lights at night other than say street lights or similar that are allways there, this also went hand in hand with human activity.I'm sure that these things got associated with danger.
Now over here where carp are not generally fished for it can be totally the opposite lights and/or human activity hotspots like marina's picnic grounds, boat ramps etc can be associated with finding food scraps or maybe the otherthings that feed off it like crawdads as the scraps found here in the past have not represented danger.
However its all about your own confidence and i see that you may not be cofident about the larger more wary ones going too close to this kind of scenario.

Enjoyed that some interesting stuff there, especially like the bit about the undercurrents.

I'm with Mario on this one, carp here are used to boat traffic its part of their daily lives. there are times when action is slow and just after a boat has passed over your baits it happens.Even though i dislike power boats belting around all day.
As for the rod a lower end spod rod is cheaper than some of the alternatives and not lots more than the average surf rod.

Its on another thread, but Hutchinsons 'The Carp Strikes Back' is now on kindle, its a very informative book and has some entertaining stories in it too.

Thats a very nice looking carp and ive done way worse than that with a self timer LOL.

By the way, the forecast for Mick's Clearlake, CA on January 1, 2014 calls for a high of 58° and a low of 32°. Good luck!
Sounds great but the carp here are wimps and they close down at the merest drop in temps, havent caught for a few weeks now LOL

Its interesting that every year different companies bring out new model alarms in an effort to challenge Delkim - after 20 years they still remain the #1 alarm.
As much as i love nevs theres no getting away from this

Maybe there would still be a bit of flavour left after boiling it, just maybe not enough for us to smell, carp however.

Seems like any state where trout are popular is a state where northern pike are unpopular. California spent millions to eradicate northerns from Lake Davis. http://www.thefisheriesblog.com/2012/05/eliminating-invasive-predator-lessons.html
Its rather interesting that northerns are considered an undesirable invasive species in California while at the same time other "foreigners" are considered desirable, e.g., largemouth bass & brown trout. The brown trout is a true foreigner, having been introduced into the US in the late 1800s, about the same time as the common carp.
Thanks for the report John, it also makes water sources coming to and from that lake worth looking into.
Funny thing about pike is that a lot of water company reservoirs in the UK have them in and these are predominantly trout fiseries and its beyond stupid that people cant see fishing for pike at lake Davis as an extra activity, instead of the millions spent trying to eradicate them.

Great report and pictures mike with some enviable captures, Thanks for the comment about the unhooking mat, being honest i dont think that one was my suggestion but it think it was on a thread where i suggested another way of improvising.
