  1. I don't really think there is such a thing. I know in my experience that I often catch these small, stunted, little carp in the Potomac, that look really old, I also catch big, fat, scale perfect carp in the same session that look like they are really young. I think they adopt different habitat niches, and grow accordingly :).

The CA delta also throws up some carp that are small stunted and very old looking and the rest are prfectly proportioned torpedos :D

Do not feel bad, it has happened to us all at one time or another. I lost two spods the very first time I started spodding. Lucky for me, the spods drifted back to the shore, so I did not have to retrieve them.

Here are two things you can do to prevent this from happening again. First, loosen up your drag on that reel. There is no reason to have the drag all the way tight. Do this while the spod is heavy with bait. If the spod drops to the ground, then the drag is too light. You want it just tight enough that it will hold the spod. Having your drag turned down will save you even if you forget to lift the roller arm before the cast. I have done that a few times too, when I was tired. Sure, the bait goes flying out and splashing three feet in front of you, but the spod does not break off despite having stopped three feet in front of you. The second thing you should do is check your line before you start, and then again after every ten cast. I would even tug on the line to make sure it is still strong. Ultraviolet rays from the sun will break down the most lines, so keep that rod out of the sun when it is not in use.

Have fun! Spods are cool and they make baiting a lot easier.

Although not bad advice if your not putting any power into the cast but for gods sake screw the clutch tight if your going to use braid with any sort of power, if the clutch slips in the cast the line will work like a cheescutter on your finger.

The clips that come with nash marker floats are great too.

A nice steady/smooth build up of power on the cast rather than a jerky action helps too, i lost one due to those standard snap links they sell in the stores here, opened right out.

  3. I think in general they are a little overated but they do have their place, there is no 'one' bait that out fishes all others all the time, a few weeks ago i was getting fish on the method on one rod but the 3 that i got on the boilie rod were all bigger, the week after that i was completely the opposite, one 12lbr on a boilie and a bunch up to 26 on the method, and the last couple of times couldn't buy a bite on any kind of boilie,ie big, small, balanced, popped up, snowman and some other combinations, all secumbed to the method, my theory is that sometimes theyre not wanting anything other than loose feed and small particles. I have had times when boilies have out fished the method so i will always be willing to sacrifice numbers of fish on one rod in the hope, only problem i have with boilies as bait are freakin catfish god i hate those things!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  4. Yes thats the radar pit, new some guys that fished there, went out there for a look around once saw 2 large mirrors lurking by the islands, would love to have fished it, apparently you couldn't do it legally or so i was told, so it didn't ever get back to it shame really its an awsome place and wasn't far for me to go :D

seen that place on the history channel everynow and again when those "radar" dishes crop up in documentrys on radar, they wern't actually radar but thats another story and nutin to do wiv carp :)
