  1. I hardly know where to begin. The attendance, the Bank Talk, the weather and the final result is almost more than this Ol Captain can describe! I just hope with the brief space and time given that I can give it all justice. It started out as a normal Thursday but I’ve had a feeling in my bones lately about today. With the air temperature near 70 and the river low and clear, I just new it was going to be special. What I didn’t know was how special! Good friends, good food and a new King of the Ramp are almost more than one can expect in one short afternoon. What exactly happened on this lucky Thursday the 13th? I thought you’d never ask………….

The afternoon began with a gathering at the Log Cabin Restaurant just across the river from our honey hole on the Hooch. Several of us gathered there for a pleasant and Proper Pre-Pull Down Meal. Although he didn’t fish today we were joined by a certain dignitary that is more than worthy of mentioning. Carl Forrester is one of the finest men I know. Due to some important investigative work, he didn’t have time to do anything but eat with us today. He will however, be joining us very soon on the Hooch Bank. Carl is the young gentleman sitting to my right.

After some Table Talk and a fine plate of fried cauliflower, yams, turkey & dressing, pork chop, cornbread and sweet tea I was more than ready for a nap or a session on the Hooch!

Our attendance today was phenomenal. Many people talk about Fish-Ins but folks we have a Fish-In every time we meet! You just never know who will show up! In fact, several newcomers were on hand today. Among them were Scott Mier and “Bartow Ben” Blevins. Scott lives in nearby Douglasville while Ben came all the way from Cartersville just to meet with us and chat. What a joy it was to meet both of these guys. I look forward to seeing them both again real soon!

Another newcomer was Terry “Coon” Eubanks. Terry hadn’t caught a Carp in over 20 years but he quickly proved today that he still has the Golden Touch! Here he is with his fish weighing somewhere between 4-49 pounds!

Other guests today included Bull Bentley, Charlie “The Carpfather” Goff, and Michael “Big Bird” Strickland. I have loved Charlie for over 25 years. He is a mentor, father figure and a very dear part of my life. His wisdom is beyond measure. I just wish I could say the same for his height! Here he is posing with me and Big Bird! You are looking at an easy 600 pounds and that doesn’t even include Charlie!

The guests kept coming and going all afternoon. I lost two fish and finally got into the act with a small Guppy of Gold of my own……….

But the real hero of the day hasn’t even been mentioned. Kevan “Ballet” Butler made his 2008 Hooch Debut in rare form. After experiencing a patented Proper Hooch Pull-Down, Kevin quietly raised the standard to 7 lbs, 2 ozs to become our new King of the Ramp!

Oddly enough, Kevan actually hails from London, England. It seemed only fitting for him to be crowned properly and given all honor and glory that the King of the Ramp deserves!

That's right folks! Our official King of the Ramp crown was delivered today by our very own Tim “Cool Dad” Gill and his son “RT”. Thanks guys for making it happen!

    HoochMarch13023.jpg

I hope I haven’t left anyone out! It has been a wonderful day all around. All I can say to King Kevan is we are not worthy! We are not worthy! Long live the King of the Ramp!

If you don’t believe the Captain and the Crew have fun when we meet just let me challenge you to come see us sometime!

Captain I was just going to send a p.m. but I thought this would be better.I had a great time just in the short time I was on the Ramp yesterday. It was great to see all the crew togther on the ramp once again and I really look forward to this summer on the river and all the adventure it will bring. For all the folks that read this I DID say adventure. The river just flowes on by and the friends (old and new) come to see who is in attendance. This place is special.I just can't put my finger on it.Part fishing and part hanging with friends. Also that old river.Something is just there.Everyone should be so lucky as to be able to kick off your imaginary (or not ) shoes for a short afternoon and get a little "bank talk" in.

  2. good going guys! sorry i missed it but, she who must be obeyed, wanted the front porch rebuilt so as i was swinging hammers and driving nails and cutting up high dollar lumber from low cost trees, y'all were out sailing the high seas.

i will see you on thursday for lunch and for the chance to be the first king of the ramp!! sorry tim i will be first, you ol retired railroader! :D:D i say that with a smile. :D

Bib Bird I have taken the hook!!!

  3. The year has come and is almost gone(at least here in Georgia) I have had the chance to meet and fish with some great people this year and I'll have to admit I had a great time!!!Have caught some fish and have become a part of something special. C.A.G. The folks I have met have been kind and have helped me on the road to Carp heaven. My days on the bank of the Hooch have taken me back to a place where time did'nt mean that much. When it was more about what was going down the river that day and who was going to tie into that big ol Golden Ghost first. This next summer I plan to spend more time there(I'll be the one with his shoes off) Thanks to C.A.G. and the people who make it what it is.I hope everyone will have as good a Christmas(I did'nt say holiday)as I will have.I have asked Santa for a new rod and a pick-up truck. I hope to get the rod.Cool Dad has had a GOOD year. Thanks C.A.G and Merry Christmas!!!!

  4. :D:D:D Horace i have returned to the place of proper-pull downs!!!!!!!!!! i will be there for sure with the sure fire enthusiasm of at least trying to be the first to land a golden beauty for 2008!!! :D:D

ya-ll have surely been missed. see you soon.(come on new years day. hurry please hurry! :D )

    Merry Christmas to all!!!!!!!!!!!! :D:D:D

    big bird

You have no idea how much you have been missed and talked about!!! I know your ears have been ringing. That little bait packer you showed us the last time you were at the ramp is now a trusted tool. You could not have come home at a better time.

  5. What a fantastic trip! The Hooch was lonely this weekend but the ship sailed on without its Captain. To be able to fish with your son is the greatest thing I can think of.It has escaped many of us who hold your stories dear. I would have traveled twice as far to catch half as much. It's just a good thing you did'nt show those fishermen up yonder about Grits.

  6. As usual it was a great adventure!!! I wanted to say a special thanks to Dave"Godstone"Hemmings. I know he reads these adventures from across the big carp pond on our forum and has carped in places that I can't even spell.I am always proud when I can be part of the "Captains Crew" and was very happy to have met and carped with a (I hope) soon to be a new CAG member and a new friend. Thanks for the tips. I practice tonight!

  7. i am hanging up my rods for the year. so no more carping for me. unless i go ice fishing for them. its just too cold here in minnesota. its almost unbearable. so i wont be posting any carp stories anytime soon. unless we get the 1 or more warm days i am wishing for before winter.

Too much good fishing out there and too many cool stories yet to come. Get out there and dig in.Never can tell when that Godzilla-Carp may hit your line!!!

  8. at took me Haven't been long doing this kind of fishing (carp) and to be honest I did'nt think much about the sport.Until I hit the bank with some friends and a lot of doubt.Boy did that dissapear in a hurry. The sun dropping across the river, some lively "bank talk" and then it happened.I hooked what I thought was a monster (about 6 lbs). The rest is history.I can't get enough. The folke that took me fishing that day were understanding. I did'nt think about it but I guess they had all been there at sometime or another. I finally got the hook out of that ol carp and had to sit down.I know you all know how that first one felt. I hope that carp never gets that hook out of me!!!

  9. did not catch a carp one this weekend but it might be the water level that is doing it?

here in Burlington nc. we are down 4 or 5 feet. But I am new to the game and I am not giving up. how did you

    guy's fair any Better???..

    Travis
