  1. Also, if you are having to recast every 2 minutes because you have lost your Baseball sized bait from the end of your line then that is not chumming either! :D

    Gordon,

    That is funny. Good one.

  2. Oh how I love to "feed the ducks"--corn, boilies, tigers, pellets--those buggers will eat anything and need a lot of chum... err... feeding! :D:D

Will it be considered chumming if you fish a spot where ducks were just fed by visitors? Interesting.

  3. Hi Longshort

Which of the LA lakes are you fishing??

I fish and know a lot of guys who fish at themm every week, you should hook up with them..

Check out their forum at www.socalcarpclub.com

    Karl

P.S. You cannot chum here in So Cal, but you sure can feed the ducks a lot of stuff here. :D:D

P.P.S. Excuse our resident eccentric old dodderer, Phonebush, he doesn't know about how pressurised the lakes here in So. Cal really are, those in the know realise that there are many pressurised lakes in So Cal. (Sorry Phone, but not everywhere is like the boonies you fish out there) :D:D

    Hi Karl,

I really wanted to sneak down to Lake Elsinore this past weekend, but due to schedule conflicts (my wife and son were begging me to take them to Disneyland) I had to hang around LA, so my options were Puddingstone and Santa Fe Dam. Furthermore, these two lakes have always humbled me, so I really wanted to redeem myself. All I ever catch there are panfish and weeds (lots and lots of weeds). Locals who fish these lakes claim that just flylining corn is all that is needed to catch carp, but for some reason I feel that the sweet spots for the bigger fish is further out. In fact, the guy who I saw using the European rod and reel was getting major "yard" with his gear. Although I didn't see him catch any fish, I was very impressed with the distance he was getting on his casts.

I was able to contact some of the folks at SocalCarpClub via email. Real nice folks.

BTW, fishing in SoCal is probably different than from other parts of the country, in that not only do you have to deal with crowds (especially on the weekends) and high entrance fees, but also you have to put up with the lack of fishing etiquette.

  4. longshort,

Are you paylaking? I have never seen a "high pressured" wild lake in the US. Some lakes have fewer fish than others.

I like the way you are adding the flavor. Just drain the liquid then add the flavor and shake it all about.

My bet is that the fish were just "off" during the time you were angling. This is generally why carp anglers carry 376 different baits every time we go out. (If the fish are off 376 baits don't work either).

    Phone

    Hi Phone,

Thanks for the reply. I don't think we have paylaking here in SoCal. By high pressured, I meant lakes in LA County that get hit by crowds (especially on the weekends) going for primarily for planted trout or catfish. However, there is a small group that I see that actually fish for carp. In fact, I saw a carp angler setting with the European gear (pretty cool stuff).

In terms of my current flavoring methods, since carp have a keen sense of smell, is it possible to over-flavor? Oh yeah, I assume this flavoring method also applies to garbanzo beans or chick peas. I never used chick peas before and intend of flavoring (after draining) with strawberry jello.

Wow....I really have a lot to learn in terms of getting these gamefish.

    Thanks Again,

    longshort

  5. Do you chum this area any or often with sweet corn? If so you might just wanna try 1 kernel of corn on a size 6 bait holder

I always seem to do better when I leave the corn juice in with the flavoring.

    good luck!

    Hi Justin,

Unfortunately chumming is not allowed here in SoCal. Thanks for the advice on flavoring. Next time I'll just add the flavoring with the corn juice. BTW, will the same method hold for powdered type mixtures (such as jello or pudding)?

  6. Tried out a couple high pressured lakes this weekend and all I got were nibbles from bluegills. The night before I drained a can of sweet corn and placed the contents in a zip locked bag. Before refridgerating I put in a tablespoon of pure vanilla extract. I usually do okay with this process down in another lake, but was unsuccessful at the high pressured venues.

Did I add too much vanilla? Should I have just added the extract with the corn juice? Also, could it be that the carp have simply been fed up with corn?

Am I flavoring the right way? Oh yeah, my setup was a basic Carolina Rig on four pound test.
