    Thanks

I have run tournaments on several venues in WI that meet that criteria, and have access to many more that might be a good fit; my problem is timing for 2015. I am selected for the 2015 World Match Fishing Championships (Slovenia) in September, and I have been asked to captain at the 2015 World Carp Fishing Championships (Spain) in October. With the WI CC Qualifiers through Spring and the WI CC in June, that doesn't leave me any time to organize such a prestigious event as the CCC?

Two questions; does the CCC have to be in September? If the answer to that question is "Yes", then my follow-up question is, would you be interested in the 2016 CCC being in WI? I think I could make next year happen, if I start planning now.

  2. Ohio:

  3. Hi Folks, I've just returned from Italy, have read this series of posts, and all I can say is:

    1. For those who have supported Team USA; a sincere Thank You from us all. We couldn't have done it without you, and your thoughts and best wishes kept us going through some very difficult times on this trip.

    2. For those who allege there was some back door dealings or that somehow US Anglers were barred from the Team... You are apparently living in an alternative reality, where conspiracies and skulduggery are daily obstacles to you and you alone. Facts are facts; I was mandated by the USF3 to select a Team, which I did. I've gone over in detail, in this and other forums, how I struggled for the last 3 years to find people interested in fishing a World Carp Fishing Championships, who would also be willing to make the financial and time commitments to make it happen. I selected the Team, based on a series of Trials, culminating in an Open Trial on May 10; where ALL of the original selected Anglers RE-QUALIFIED, and 2 new Anglers qualified, under the direct supervision of the Senior FIPSed Delegate in North America.

    3. As I've mentioned several times on this and other forums, I continue to be surprised by the people who allege that I've somehow excluded them, or others, from applying for the Open Trial, or that I've manipulated the Rules somehow, to ensure that they are excluded. These ideas are laughable, and I'm here today to say, that they are WRONG. I don't set the FIPSed Carp Rules, but I base the Trials format on selecting Anglers who can catch Carp within those Rules. If you can't cast, fish, attract fish, hook and land them, from ranges in excess of 150 yards, for 72 hours, under all conditions, there is no point in you trying out for Team USA. There is also ONLY FINANCIAL LOSS, no gain, for the Anglers and Officials in Team USA; unless you are prepared to invest a minimum of $3-4,000 and 3 full weeks of your time, each year, there is no point in you trying out for Team USA.

    4. I think it's very sad that those Americans who have been selected to fish for Team USA, who have demonstrated in Open Trials their capabilities, and who have now gone to a World Championships, and suffered financial hardships and lost time from work, to endure stressful challenges and make a supreme effort for their Country, well... It's just very sad that they will probably read this thread now and think, "why did I bother?"

  4. Unfortunately Marcus, the FIPSed Rules are very specific; hair rigs and boilies, no method feeders, no float fishing, etc.

We actually have several lakes in the US absolutely stuffed with small Carp; trouble is that these are also very "easy" waters... Not too difficult to catch up to 30 fish an hour.

  5. Yes, Marcus, although I'd suggest that the media really didn't raise the ruckus... it seemed to originate from the Sponsor of one of the National Teams that didn't do quite as well as they had expected, and the "big story" was leaked some time after the event itself?

I tend to be a little skeptical of "after the event whining". All Team Captains have a clear mandate to raise a formal complaint to the International Jury if any cheating is discovered or suspected, complete with a cash deposit, and within the time allowed for formal complaints, as defined in the FIPSed Rules.

The fish on Lac Corbu II have grown on a bit since 2012, but yes, typically FIPSed World Carp Championship venues have a big head of smaller fish. Again, that's in the Rules, FIPSed Delegates prefer to see Championships where lots of fish are caught. It's definitely more often that UK Carp Match style tactics are needed, with the best Teams aiming to catch more than 500 small fish rather than the "sit and wait" for maybe 5 big fish over the 72-hour period.

I don't have anything like the sponsorship and the budget of either South Africa or England... but maybe that's also one of the reasons why I chose not to field a Team in Portugal last year?

  6. Last call for the Open Trials for Saturday May 10th. I have 3 Anglers signed up, and the President of the USF3 will be attending as our FIPSed/CIPS Official. The rest of the TeamUSA Carp Squad will also be flying and driving in, to welcome the Anglers to the Trials and keep them company through each of the disciplines. There's no truth to the rumor that I will require everyone to run around Lake Andrea to prove their fitness, though... I'll be reserving that little exercise for our pre-Breakfast warm-up on Sunday...

Spectators are of course very welcome, and I believe there will be some Raffle prizes and a 50:50 payout, for those attending. We will be meeting up at 12:45pm for the Trials start at 1:00pm; please pm me here, reply to this post, or call me at 920-246-3434, if you are interested in attending.

  7. Thanks for all the hard work on this. I'd like everything mentioned above, if possible:

    • CAG Logo decals/stickers
    • Printable Brochure File for download
    • Printable Biz Card File for download
    • Digital High Res CAG Logo available
    • Generic CAG Certificates for download
    • Custom CAG Hats for Biggest fish caught during a fish-In.

  8. Hi Folks, I've just announced the 2014 Team USA Carp Squad Trial on the Facebook Page; here are the main details as well:

Calling All US Carp Tournament Anglers!

Date - Saturday May 10 @ 12:00 Noon (we may also hold the Trial again on Sunday, same time, if any Angler just can't make the Saturday Trial)

Location - Lake Andrea, Pleasant Prairie, WI (off Interstate 94, a few miles North of the IL border)

Attend the Open Trial ($25 Donation to cover expenses) and try to qualify for the Team USA Carp Squad. We still have a couple of places yet to fill for the 2014 World Carp Championship (Romania).

If you want to try out for the Team, but don't have the time or money to attend this years World Carp Championship, your Qualified Carp Squad status will also be good for Team USA Call-Up in future years.

To Attend, reply to this Event, donate your $25 using the Tickets Tag below (email lee_s_young@yahoo.com with your Name, Address, and Phone Number, to confirm you have made a donation), or request to pay in cash on the day.

I've also copied the Trial Model here:

The 2014 Team USA Carp Squad Trial will cover the following tests:

    1. Pre-Trial Checks:
    A. Angler can build an effective long range rig (Std. helicopter, Std. chod stiff rig, distance in-line, etc.) - 10 points
    B. Angler can build an effective baiting model (Boilie PVA, Crush PVA, Stick PVA, Boilie Stringer, possibly PVA bag, if needed?) - 10 points
    C. Angler understands loose feeding model & tools (Spod, Throwing Stick, Hand Catapult, possibly Range Catapult, if needed?) - 10 points

    2. 100 yd Trial:
    A. Angler & Coach confirm clipped rig on an accurate 100 yds (use rangefinder, and far bank static marker or marker float). Allow Angler a few casts to get range and accuracy then;
    B. 10/10 or more casts to clip and within 3 yds of target (record score) - 10 points
    C. Accurate casting over 30 minutes, with selected baiting model (e.g. Boilie PVA, etc.) - record % of on-target casts - up to 100 points

    3. 125 yd Trial:
    A. Accurate 125 yds on clip, into a cross-wind if possible
    B. 7/10 or more casts to clip and within 5 yds of target, all casts within 10 yds of target (record) - 20 points
    C. Accurate casting over 60 minutes, with selected baiting model (Crush PVA) - record - up to 100 points

    4. 150 yd Trial:
    A. Accurate 150 yds on clip, into a cross-wind if possible
    B. 5/10 or more casts to clip and within 7 yds of target (record) - 30 points
    C. Accurate casting over 90 minutes, with selected baiting model (Stick PVA) - record - up to 100 points

    5. Max Range Trial:
    A. Keep adding 1 rod length (4 yds/12 ft) onto 150 yd clip, record where Angler maxes out
    B. Record % of casts to clip and within 10 yds of target, over 30 minutes - up to 100 points
    C. Wait 10 minutes, then record next 10 casts at max. range. - up to 100 points

    6. Feeding Trial:
    Record Anglers ability (and learning capacity) with two different loose feeding methods;
10 minutes per method - up to 5 points per method

    Maximum Score = 600 points.

  9. No such thing as a stupid question. I will try and answer them all:

    1. Both 12 ft rods are designed to work well with 5000-6000 size reels. After all, carp reels run from 5000 size all the way up to the Big Pit style reels. Both 12 ft rods would also cast paddle tails easily on the lines you mention; the ACS120MHMF2 would work best with 2-4 oz baits, and the ACS120HMF2 would be better with 3-6 oz baits. However, the biggest issue you would have with both 12 ft rods would be the repeated casting; for Stripers you may be casting 30-60 times an hour. Those longer rods are light, but for regular, repeated casting of paddle tails I'd recommend that ACS96MMF2. The 9ft 6in rod will feel a LOT lighter after a couple of hundred casts.

    2. A 4000 size reel won't cast as far as a 6000 size reel; the smaller reel will cast 75-90% of the distance of the bigger reel, depending upon rig used and casting technique. First (butt) guide on the 12ft rods is 50mm; first guide on the 9ft 6in rod is 40mm. I actually use a 4000 size reel on my ACS96MMF2; that works fine for stalking and close range float fishing, and I can cast up to about 90 yds if needed.

    3. The last question is the most difficult to answer. I once cast a 10 oz bank sinker on the ACS120MHMF2, just to see if it would do it. The rod coped just fine, but I think that would be regarded as rod abuse! A gentle lob with a fish bait up to 6 oz or so would not be a problem on any of the rods, and you could probably go even heavier on the ACS120HMF2 (rated up to 6 oz, but will handle half a pound casting weight, with good technique).

Yes, the IPC tapers and the mix of different strengths and wraps of carbon fibre in the tip section give that unique capability of the Avid Carp Series to load from the butt for casting smoothly and efficiently; and then load from the tip into a more moderate smooth transitional power curve for fighting big fish. The ACS120MHMF2 is the lighter action Carp Tournament rod, and I rate it as the best rod on the market for catching big fish on small hook finesse techniques. If you think you will never need to go smaller than a size 8 hook, then the ACS120HMF2 has more power, and less finesse. If you will be casting a lot of paddle tails, then the ACS96MMF2 is probably your best compromise; hope these answers help?

  10. Hi Folks, I'm going to suggest that (rather than post everything up here) I direct you to the Facebook Page (above), where I'm loading up detailed information on the event. I have the FIPSed Rules, Video footage from the last World Carp Championship, and will be adding more information as it arrives.

  11. I'm pleased and a little surprised by the overwhelmingly positive feedback to my recent announcement of TeamUSA Carp Squad, for the upcoming 2014 World Carp Championships. Thanks ALL, for your interest and support, I know all the guys in the Carp Squad appreciate your enthusiasm!

An ideal scenario for me would be having 8 Anglers and me, at the World Carp Championship in Romania, in October. This would allow me to focus on my captain's duties and also field a couple of reserves, ready, trained and willing to step in if we have anyone develop an injury during the 72 hours of the tournament.

So, I know it's a "big ask", but I'm wondering; is there anyone out there who would be willing to attend a TeamUSA Carp Squad Trial? I've asked the USF3 if i can hold another Carp Squad Trial, probably in the late Spring, and they are certainly supportive. Before you answer "Sure!" I should of course give you the elevator pitch on what it takes to get in the Carp Squad:

    1. Able to cast a WCC-compliant Carp rig a minimum of 150 yds, throughout a 72-hour Tournament

    2. Familiar with WCC-compliant long-range groundbaiting methods, and experienced at using at least two of the approved methods, throughout a 72-hour Tournament

    3. Familiar with the WCC-compliant Carp rigs, and experienced in their construction, tactical use, and applicability for different baits and conditions

    4. US Citizen and valid US Passport Holder (Green Card Holders working through their US Citizenship may also apply for the Trial for 2015 Carp Squad places, as they may also be eligible under the FIPSed “Foreign Angler” rule)

    5. Willing to contribute a minimum of $1,000 towards your personal travel and TeamUSA Carp Squad costs

    6. Able to take a minimum of 10 days vacation, to attend the World Carp Championships

    7. Physically fit enough to make a working commitment to the Team, throughout several days of preparation, intensive training, and the entire 72 hours of the World Carp Championships

    8. Able to make a Carp Squad Trial, probably in Mid-May (Venue TBA), where we can run through a Trial with you (details provided on request, but basically it will be proving you can tests 1, 2, 3, and 7, above).

Hope I haven't put you off? If you are interested (and, it may be that you would be interested in 2015, rather than this year?), PLEASE pm me here, or give me a call on 920-246-3434, or reply to the TeamUSA Carp Squad Facebook Page: https://www.facebook.com/TeamUSAcarpsquad

Thanks in advance, and if you have any questions, please let me know and I will try and find you the answers.

    Tight Lines!

    Lee

  12. Hi Standalone, thanks for your enquiry.

The Avid Carp 12ft ACS120MHMF2 will definitely cast 1/2 oz weights (bass sinkers or bored bullets), as it was designed as an all-round Carp rod... And lots of Carp are caught by creeping up on them and precision-casting to feeding fish at close range (up to 40 yds). I'd recommend using 8-10 lb line, or a maximum of 20 lb braid, to get the maximum range out of your casts with a 1/2 oz sinker. This rod will also cast up to 4 oz specialist Carp casting weights and Carp-specific rigs, up to 125 yds plus (with good technique), so you have a lot of options available in the one rod. I even have buddies who use these rods for heavy float (bobber) fishing for Carp.

You mentioned that this is a big (long) rod; have you considered the Avid Carp 9ft 6in ACS96MMF2? This rod handles sinker weights from 1/2 oz to 3 oz. It's lighter, shorter, and easier to handle, and casts up to 90 yds, if needed. It's also a popular rod with my buddies who cast spoons for Steelhead, Trout, and Salmon; a very versatile rod.

Here's the link for the rods: http://stcroixrods.com/products/freshwater/avid-series-spinning/

Let me know if you have any other questions, and I'll do my best to find you the answers.

  13. Thanks, and anyone who is interested in discovering what it takes to be in the Team USA Carp Squad, please pm me, or email me at lee_s_young@yahoo.com. If I can ever figure out how to respond to Pm's on my iPad (I have one from yesterday, but now it's showing as deleted???), I'll get back to you individually there, or send you a link to the Facebook page where we are storing all the rules, etc.

  14. The USAngling group & The United States Freshwater Fishing Federation (USF3) are proud to announce the 2014 USA Team for 16th World Carp Fishing Championships!

Tony Forte of USAngling/USF3 expains, "This is our first ever carp team. We are very excited to compete with the world's best carp anglers this fall in Romania. Carp angling interest has exploded in recent years here in the U.S. This team will be our opportunity to show off our best carp anglers on the world stage. One of our short term goals for USAngling and USF3 is to host the Carp World Championship event here in the U.S. We have some truly amazing carp fisheries in the U.S. that anglers from across the globe are wanting to fish. Bear in mind that we are referring to Common Carp, not the invasive Asian species that are causing trouble in the Mississippi watershed. These invasive asian species are not allowed in these championships. Common Carp are truly one of the world's greatest sportfish, combining size, strength, stamina, and a wary nature. Catching large Carp is a challenge that Team USA is looking forward to. We hope that we can surprise the other nations at this championships, and Team USA is preparing to do just that! We would love to see some medals hanging from our carper's necks..."

Team USA will comprise of six anglers at the 2014 World Carp Championships, to be held in mid-October in Romania.

The 2014 US Team has been selected using a Trials process, and the Anglers are:

    August Wells

    Kevin Olivier

    Sean Lehrer

    Ivelin Petrov

    Mihai Aciu

    Lee Young (Captain)

The Trials selection process covered a rigorous series of tests, designed to ensure that the Anglers selected would be able to compete against the very best Carp Fishing Teams in the World. As Lee Young (USF3 Carp Program Manager and Captain of the Team USA Carp Squad) explained, "The Anglers need to be able to cast very long distances, with extreme accuracy, over the 72 hours of this Endurance Event. So, the tests were designed to not only confirm that the Anglers who qualified could cast a minimum of 150 yds, but that they could hit the same spot at the beginning and end of the trials."

"During the event, each Angler will need to take rest breaks, so training for muscle memory is a key part of each Anglers follow-up training. Everyone who passed the trials had to practice and work hard to complete the tests with a high score, but we all know that the Trials were just the start; training will be harder, as the Championship itself will be a tough test of both skills and endurance!"

Young has spent many weeks and traveled thousands of miles each year since 2011, scouting likely Anglers as they competed in US Carp Tournaments, then following up with interviews, and culminating in the Trials themselves. "I originally started trying to hold Qualifier Events, but there wasn't much interest from the US Carp Tournament Anglers, and I couldn't fill a single Qualifier with enough entries to make it a "fair Test", Young explained. "It's understandable; why should Anglers change from money-winning US methods, to fish a Qualifier geared around different rules and methods, in order to qualify for a World Championship with no cash prizes? I think attitudes will slowly change, as the first US Carp Team travels to Romania later this year. People here have no concept of how BIG the World Carp Championship is in other Countries. Once we've taken the first US Team to a World Carp Championship, I think the interest will grow, and hopefully we will be able to attract more Sponsors to help cover our costs for future years."

Each Angler is required to raise money towards their travel costs, while Young and the USF3 is working with potential Sponsors to secure financial aid, bait, and the specialist fishing gear needed to compete at the highest level. In addition, Young confirmed that each of the selected Anglers has already made significant financial contributions, just to travel to the Trials and Training Sessions already held, with more planned for this year. "The most exciting part of the selection process was seeing the Team Commitment", commented Young. "Every Angler has demonstrated his willingness to learn new skills, or retrain old skills, as everyone is very eager for TeamUSA to succeed. There's no talk about what an individual wants, everyone is concerned about what's best for the Team. We've had one of the guys travel to Romania, to test rigs and baits, and everyone involved has already put in hundreds of hours and thousands of miles to prepare for the World Championship. This is the first US Team to fish this event, so we are trying to plan and prepare well in advance, to be as competitive as possible in Romania."

The USF3 will be making further announcements in the near future, as the Coaches, Reserves, Logistic Support Team, and Delegates are selected. Carp Anglers who are interested in the Qualification and Trials process for Team USA Carp Squads for 2015, please contact Lee Young (lee_s_young@yahoo.com). Please also see our Facebook page (facebook.com/usangling) for regular updates about all TeamUSA activities (Don't forget to "like" our page). Anyone interested in Sponsoring Team USA Carp Squad, please contact Lee Young, or select the Donate Button on the USF3 Website: www.usangling.org. All Donations are handled by the United Charitable Programs (UCP), a 501©3 management organization, as the charitable and fiscal host for the USF3.

  15. Lee Jackson's book is a great starter for Carp Fishing, and covers most of the basic techniques extremely well.

One thing to always bear in mind when reading an English Carp book is that our fish and waters are a little different. Lee deals with stocked Carp in heavily fished small ponds, while our fish have been wild since the 1870's, and some of our waters are a little larger. Lake Michigan is one of my HOT waters for Carp... But that's not a 3 acre Carp Pond.

The key factors remain the same; features and location, wind direction and temperature, good quality baits, presented where and when a feeding fish can get at them.

  16. Sorry about the wording of my post, I was just asking if the Carp were more often caught these days, than when I last fished there. Apparently the news is good and lots of Carp are now a feature of tournaments there! I realize that every venue has its Off days (we've seen a bunch of hard tournaments this Spring in WI), but it sounds like it should be a fun event.

Jim always puts on a wonderful show for us all, and I'm already working on my Calendar, to see if I can free up that weekend.

  17. Jim, I don't want to sound negative, but... The pictures look suspiciously like the White River, outside your Bait Shop.

Last time I fished an event there (a pairs tournament), we were bang in the middle of the section between two bridges and never had a sniff of a carp all day! If I remember correctly, I was reduced to catching Bluegills in the last couple of hours, just to put any weight on the scales... I think we ended with 40 lb of Bluegills and 2nd place, due to almost no carp being caught in the entire river that day.

I'd like to fish a CCC, and the 20th Anniversary sounds good... But please tell me that the carp fishing has improved?
