  1. Summer is on us. If you live in an area where water temps are up, and the fish have no retreat from it....the bite will be off. Carp being cool water fish go into obligate torpidity in warm water conditions. Most carp regress in weight during the warm months of a season. That is why they are stunted in Florida and similar regions. Warm water fish like bass grow hugely there and are stunted where the carp grow large.

Carp grow during the cool and cold water period along with the submerged insect life in the northern belt. That is why they weigh so much prespawn. Consider the billions of hatching flies that emerge in late winter and spring. Literally tons of forage. In summer the detritus fields are devoid of these nymphs and larval forms that existed in the winter. Consider just the shad fly emergence on the St Lawrence. If you have ever witnesed the phenomenon you will never forget the tons of insects which emerge from the river onto land.Winter growth is utilized for body mass and gametogenesis, or egg and sperm production.

Cool water assists them to grow on less than they will attempt to eat the rest of the year, and optimum metabolism occurs below 68 deg F as evidenced by the power of the thrashing spawn season carp. They also widely range at this time travelling miles in a day, but as temps warm they seek cooler holes and adopt core areas. To catch big fish you need to be on their nose in this area, or you will gather smaller fish during this time of year.

Some carp will even die simply due to routine catch and release practices. Undue playing the fish stresses the fish, as well as prolonged photo taking. Fish thus played and released in hot temps suffer the equivalent of heat stroke, may seem to not swim well and usually drift off and die from oxygen exchange problems and balance equilibrium disorder.

For most of us the spring was the best time of the year. All will improve in the fall.

how's the fishing on Cayuga ???

i have a friend that has a house right on the lake (I think :D )

From what Ive read some parts of the lakes are 400ft deep. The Loch Ness monster could be down there! I spent the night in one of the state parks and fished for the morning hours. Caught about 8 doubles.

They mention the carp fishing on the states brochure. There has to be some unusally long lived carp in there.

It would take a long time to explore . Lots of private property along the shoreline with the lake as a back yard.

  3. I suppose the posts on the most recent Jr tourney are slow because many of us are just getting back home. Thats the case with me as I sidetracked to the Finger Lakes region and fished a number of venues on the way home.

Actually I would describe it as limping home, with a stay over in Seneca falls and an overnight in the Cayuga state park. Excellent carping, by the way.

Anyway, some of the more entertaining highlights of the trip was the free tap provided by Ed's baits at Mimi's nest which occupied our time immediately after the events at the civic center. All you had to do was say CAG tab and it was covered. Although it was a last minute event, many of the CAG volunteers as well as the other local volunteers got the word and it was a great time.

We shared the outdoor bar with a poker run, really fun chaps, and finally a band of nubile young women arrived to celebrate a bachlorette party. They all had tee shirts that said Kay C's last fling... and on the back it said...before the ring. There was a band playing good dance music and the band played till nearly 2:00 am for those that persisted at Mimi's. Was I there for the closing...yes I was, reliving old times with Dave Moore and I who left the Riverview to go looking for bow hunters at Mac's. (For those who are confused about this, its an IN thing, you just had to be there back went.)

Well after Mac's we ended up at the Mimi's till it closed, had a hell of a rip out there, and finally arrived back at the Riverview where most of the participants were broke or petered out.

No problem, between Dave, Tal and myself who I will describe as the frivolously wealthy, reinvigorated the participants and bought a couple rounds for the bar. The only drawback was Rob Henwood doing Karaoke till 0430 am, when Pete finally called an end to the event.

Even then the excitement transfered to the Coles creek campground where another crew was up and receptive . When you count all the little get togethers among friends, the dining out including breakfast hunters, etc. The good times all around, and there are so many stories to tell.

And of course there is the scalp. Although a few would have liked to see the scalp bring forth a prize, the tourney was limited to cyprinius carpo. It is unlikely scalps will be included as an event in future tourneys. Some came away from the event thinking scalps are best caught on corn, others disagree.

An official weight and photo of the scalp was not done, although it was covered by all the newspapers in the area.

Some great photos were taken during the event and I hope will soon make the forum. Besides the rescue divers that arrived to investigate the scalp capture, some CAG members went diving again this year after rods that flew into the river. I became aware of a rod that was completely pulled into Brandi bay, but a bit of line was recovered and the Jr angler tugged the line to recover both rod, and the fish to her credit.

Scott Osmond, Grand Marshal of special mention dove for one such rod in the main river for a partial recovery. Good show all around Oz. You have come to show yourself as a true ambassador, and man of giving spirit.

Well we all got stories to tell, about the carp, the kids, new PB's (I heard a few), new friends made, etc. Lets hear em!

  4. For those familiar with the Blue Marsh Dam, it overflowed submerging housing and highways. For the first time in its inception, they opened the flood gates at the stilling basin. The result is to turn the tulpehockin creek into a raging river which scoured the creek path to the Schuylkill.

For some years the state has been trying to contain an established population of flatheads stocked illegally there in Blue Marsh.

The massive release of water from this system has a number of implications for points on the river to Philly.

Both Blue Marsh and the Tully are noted for its carp...and now flatheads. The overall effect of this flood will be a benefit to the growth of the fish in the system. But the spread of flatheads will not please the state.

The photo shown is usually a small stream of water and the stilling basin is a favorite of panfish and walleye anglers that throw lures and floats down stream. Occasionally an unlucky large fish will come down from above. Chances of it making its way miles downstream the babbling brook like outlet would be slim. At least two dam projects along the way would help contain the fish. But they are simple very old structures which were once old mills and covered bridges now preserved by the Berks Historical Society, County, and state. I hope they withstood.

Ancient locks from the Schuylkill Navigation Company which once operated the Schuylkill canal systems provided tow path canals from the mills and river points as far north as the Pennsylvania coal regions. These are now bike and hike trails along the Tully, and when the waters recede, the damage will be realized.

  5. Over 50 year old CAGr's

I missed this post the first time around, as I thought from the title it was a kids fish-in with 50 or more one year old kids,

But now that I have looked at the post I think I might qualify, if you guys will have me as I am 66 now. :D:D

    Mickey and Jim :D

    PS. Mickey's 6 now

You are absolutely welcome. The more the merrier. So far next meeting next year Memorial day on the St L. At least 4 of us are booked in advance for the riverview, but if this keeps going we can get Jerry's motel involved too.

PS - How did you ever fare with the program ????

No problem Rob. because you thought up that great meals on wheels idea on the bankside, I think you and the Oz should be welcome on the trip.

  7. Fran, it wouldnt be complete without you.

And as fran will attest, another case of getting no respect. NJ Rob and his photo manipulations. Here is Fran and I as coaches of the Polish Olympic team.

  8. I'm not quite as old as Charlie (I'll be 65 soon) but count me in. I talk to Charlie quite often. He doesn't spend much time on the forum so I'll mention it to him next time we talk.

  10. Bob.. thanks for the post & pics. Wish I could have been there but this thread is the next best thing ...

Congrats on a great looking session.

PS - I aint 50 so Ill just KICK IT at the kiddy table.

One of our talks was the disrespect shown by NJ Rob and Scott O to us old guys. Far too many comments about not being able to keep up from these two. And last year I woke up to having to wrestle with these young bloods on the bank.

And Amy has photo evidence of even worse shenanigan's. Sea weed or cow pies placed in your bivvy...etc

Amy was most impressed with our gentlemanly style last session.

  11. That's me.

It would seem there would be a notice that your membership is expired or about to

expire. I just assumed I was shut off because of a controversial subject / post.

Fran, it could be because you and I are coaching the Polish Women's gymnastic team. A lot of jealousy generated there.
