  1. Barbel I have been using a homemade mix, Horsenutz, for the past 10 years plus. It's name came about when one of the guys I fish with saw a 35mm I had rolled saying, "What is that a horse's nut?". Just kinda stuck. I grind and mix all the ingredients myself. I roll 500-800 pounds a year and use them year round. Due to the amount I roll I am able to fish with them the same way others use maize if I so choose but generally I scatter them over the area I am fishing to keep the fish grazing around. Unlike most of the commerical baits you can buy I do not add any flavor to the boilies instead I am relying on the basemix and liquid attractors, all natural, I use.Its funny/sad after 10 years I am almost scared of flavors at this point.

  2. Rebel definately a good plan but may I make a suggestion.

I feel you may help your odds by baiting with 2.5 pound on day 1 as opposed to on day 3. I would chop/crush 2 of the 2.5 pounds and spread this out over a little larger area than you plan to fish on day 4. By chopping/crushing the boilies you will be releasing the attractors quicker and creating small bits that will get trapped in the nooks and crannies of the swim's bottom keeping the fish in the area looking for the source a bit longer. By baiting a large area you will be upping your chances of intercepting any carp moving through the area.

Day 2 and 3 I would go with 50/50 mix of chopped/whole boilies and reduce the size of the area you are baiting. This gives you a lot more baits in the area, hopefully giving the fish a reason to hang around longer.

Day 4 I would start the session without adding any free offerings, let your hookbaits and stix/stringers be the only new items to eat. When you start getting into the fish you can start introducing some freebies and even then I would continue with chops and whole boilies. In my experience I have found once they get on your boilies it matters little what size or shape they are as long as they are in the same area the carp have found them in the past.

As a side note I have been using boilies almost exclusively for 10 years now and have used this tactic with great results. I have also found that boilies can be as instant as any other bait we use, its only bait after all. Last week I baited an area with 1 pound of whole boilies, 14/18mm, for three days then fished on the forth and caught during the 2 hours I was able to squeeze in behind he rods.

Good luck and please let us know how you make out.

  3. Rebel if you are having issues with the swivel slipping out of the inline insert you could put a piece of mono ( leave the tag end of your knot 3/4" long) in the insert with the swivel this will lock it in. But there is nothing wrong with a running inline in some situations.

  4. Gray Wolf go wih a long hooklink ( 12"+ ) and a lighter lead ( 2 oz. or less ) on a safety lead clip with the nose rubber pushed on just enough to hold for the cast. You want to drop the lead when you get a run, this helps keep the carp from completely weeding you up, but does not guarantee it will not. If you have pva mesh I would also advise you to make a stick up of an item that floats like dog or cat food and nick it on your hook. This will do two things; 1. Help stop the hooklink from tangling on the cast. 2. Allow the lead to gently settle into the top portion of the weeds and do the same for the hooklink when the stick melts. I have had good luck using critically balanced and pop-up baits in this type of situation.

  5. Jaminski do you clip up while casting spods and rigs while using the Emblems? I have the Emblem XAs and have alway been a bit leary about casting to the clip due to the fact it is thin plastic and I am using braid.

  6. This may sound like a dumb question but I am wondering if there are any reason why I could not use Diawa's Spod reel for actual fishing? Is there anything in the specs or design that would stop one from using it for throwing rigs when not spodding out bait?

The reason I ask is because there are a few swims I frequent that are a far hike and I like to travel light, so if I could reduce the number of rods it would be to my advantage.

  7. Guys I am looking for new distance reels and am thinking about getting a set of these reels. I have read a few reviews from the UK where guys have complained about loose handles. Is this still a problem with the reels. Thanks for any info you can provide about these reels.

  8. To add on to the Tom/Dave coversation...

I fish a few events each year when I am not trying to bank the big girls. When I fish the events boilies are part of the equation that usually put myself and my partner in the money, but they are not our main weapon of choice because at times they can be too selective. Actually too selective may be the wrong term... at times they are not as instant and readily taken as other baits and that just is not condusive to getting into the money. They are great for giving the carp something to munch on, inturn keeping them in the swim longer, but they are not our first choice when numbers of any size fish are the order of the day. There are many other baits that will do a much better job when it comes to catching any and all carp.

Now if it is bigger fish I am after a boilie is my number one choice. Not because they only catch big carp but because the unwanted spieces and smaller carp seem to them leave them alone longer compared to sweet corn, maize, and the 100s of other baits we use. From my experience I have found that if you can keep your swim quiet and a bait on your hair you will have a better chance at getting into a better fish.

Tom I have fished for both numbers of fish and big fish and I can tell you they are two completely different ways of fishing and more importantly two totally different bait approaches. Like paylaking you have to accept and trust in the techniques and tactics or you will never succeed in putting BIG carp on the mat on a consistent basis. NOW GO GUS

  9. Hey Kathy how's it going? I have been trying to get my partner's and my fishing license on line and have had no luck. It keeps telling me that I can not do it because I am not in their records. I am trying to get an out of state license.

Has anyone else had a problem getting their license online?

  10. Hey guys, these questions are for you guys who have fished this venue.

How far from the vehicles will we be?

In a few pics I have seen what looks to be a concrete wall you are fishing off of, how far off the water is it? Looking for this info so that I can make up some longer cords for our carp sacks.

    Thanks
