  1. Guys,

Thanks for all the replies. BTW, this is not my first 30. I have caught plenty in the St. L, but those are a dime a dozen over there. In my lake, I have never caught one.

PS. My PB is a 37 (on that same scale) from the St L one lonely cold weekend in early May 2002. One fish for the weekend, but what a fat pig she was. I have checked my scale with others (RHs) and I am a few pounds short. So I would like to believe that that was really a 40. But then again, it could have been a 39.5. Either way, I have only a crummy picture because a passing walleye fisherman took it and I could not pose because the carp was so heavy I could not lift it correctly off the ground!!!

    Thanks

  2. I have been taking colleagues of mine for overnight carping trips on Delta Lake. Last week, we caught 12 with the largest a 24#. This week, I took another colleague and we caught few, but large. At 1:15 AM the alarm went of and I grabbed the rod. It had my new BBLC I bought from Dr. M with 17# mono (Coffee color Stren). It felt heavy and strong and took long runs. My colleague was the designated fish netter. On the mat, it was huge. The first 1 meter carp I ever caught at 102 cm. 28.5 #s on my crummy Shimano scale which I once checked against a certified RH and it weighs low. So I would like to believe this is my first ever 30# from Delta Lake.

    See the pic.

  3. Carpaholic125,

Excellent catch. I fished Cayuga a few times when we would go to Cornell U in Ithaca. NY. I caught nothing big (up to 17 #) but as many as I could want. There are definitely larger ones but I have apparently been fishing the wrong weekends!!!!!!

Good luck and if you ever need someone to fish with, PM me.

    Thanks

    Carpniels.

PS. Love the Wegmans shirt. Best place to get groceries.

Are you going to drive up to Syracuse for the CAGI on 25 June? It is in the park on the north end of Onondaga Lake. Fun event and lots of carpers from all over upstate NY.

  4. Guys,

I have been growing fish since college. Many tanks up to 55 gallons. I never change the water. Adding drinking water only changes the chemical composition of the water, which stresses the bacteria which thrive on the fish waste. The only water I add is what evaporates. And I use no chemicals.

This is what I do to start a tank:

    1) add gravel (from the concrete factory= cheap) after you wash it to get the fines out.

    2) add tap water to 75% full.

    3) add a bubbler, a heater and the lights.

    4) let it run for a week.

    5) add the plants you like. Make a good design with tall skinny ones in the back and broadleaf short ones in the front. Hide the roots deep or between large rocks or wood. Add a LOT of plants, because these will act as your filter.

    6) add all your fish after another few days. Don't feed them for a day or so. Then only feed them so they immediately eat the food and nothing goes to waste. Add pellets on a saucer on the bottom if you have bottomfeeders. Keep the fish hungry.

It will take a little while for the system to establish itself. The ammonia in the fish pee will be converted to nitrite and then nitrate, which then will be anaerobically broken down in the deep layers of gravel to nitrogen. You will see that you plants will thrive and will be 'hungry' for any nitrogen they can filter from the water for growth. The fish will eat ferociously so no food is wasted and rots on the bottom.

This way, my tanks are almost perfect biological systems that will selfregulate themselves. All I had to do was add feed and cut out weeds when they grew too high.

Now, I understand that this might be difficult with substantial carp (6 inch and up), but you can choose sturdy plants and anchor them between rocks.

Sometimes less is more. and remember KISS.

P.S. if you want to grow carp as fast as possible, there are other systems available. Generally, those shouldn't be built in your home (garage or basement will do) but they stink and are dirty (trust me, I worked in them for years). But you can grow catfish from egg to 3 pounds in 6 months time.

  5. Guys,

Here in NY, you cannot stock ANY fish in ANY water without a NYS Department of Environmental Conservation permit. However, if you own private water with no outlet, those permits are not hard to get. In public water or waters with an outlet that is connected to a public water, Good luck. They will allow native species (bass, bullhead, minnows, and the trouts) but almost anything else will be denied.

If you want to stock your own pond without getting the permit, that is up to you but you cannot go to a fish retailer and buy the fish without them asking and checking your permit. They are not allowed to sell to you if you don't have a permit.

    Thanks

    Niels

PS. I did the permitting process for a small 2 acre pond with a creek through it. We stocked minnows and 50 small mouth bass. That was pretty easy.

PPS. Joel, if you want those small carp, I can help you. In NY, you can get them at almost any aquarium store. I have seen them in the gold fish tanks here in Rome. Pet's mart has them. And my local stores too. They are really fun to have, but outgrow your tanks so fast. Start with a 55 gallon at least, otherwise you will be switching tanks every year. BTW, locally, there is a guy selling a 450 gallon tank (8x3x3 ft) I would LOVE to have that, but how do you move it? or worse, what if the tank ever fails?? I don't want to see 6 inches of water in the entire livingroom.

  6. I only run into people like that once in a while. Mostly amateur fishermen.

They do like the gizmo's and gadgets (especially when you have a run) and the love the curve in the rod once you play them.

I tend to wait them out. First answer their questions short and to the point but if they appear interested, I will elaborate.

    Works fine here.

  7. Hi MM,

Excellent question. I would think that there is an exception to the rule somewhere for private people with a garden pond. Generally, those are size related (0.5 acre pond or larger).

But it is true that if you have a stocking pond (lets say, 0.5 acres) and you want to stock it, you must get a permit before you put any fish in it. Generally, for those size ponds, you wouldn't get your fish from Petsmart, but from an official fish dealer and they will not sell you anything unless you show them your stocking permit.

Also, normally you buy koi for a pond in your backyard at any petstore, but permits are needed for trout, bass, crappy and the like. Those you cannot buy from Petsmart.

  8. Hi Marius,

LOVE the picture. Jotul wood stove blasting away, glass of red wine, feet up, Carpworld to read. What could be better?

Here things are a little different. Wood stove is running fine, although keeping the house warm when it is below zero outside is tough. I am studying a lot (PE exam in April), so I cannot relax as much as you do. Plus my 3 kids running around make relax time scarse. And I mostly read car and financial magazines (and NACA when available). Unfortunately, I have read all the stories already (I am the copy editor), but the pictures make it much more interesting.

Oh, and lets not forget snowblowing the driveway every other day.

Anyway, enjoy the time off and planning for May 2009!!!

  9. I have to agree with most of you here. 25 acres, many carpers. Sounds like shooting fish in a barrel. Sooner or later he has to eat and all there are is boilies.

Regardless, 91 Lb is massive. But 10 minutes seems disappointing. I have had 15 Lbers that took longer.

  10. Hi Mario,

You are always welcome in Rome, NY. It is about 5 hours north of New York City. I live on a carp lake, have a separate bedroom and bath for guests, and best of all, we speak Dutch at home. And I have 3 sons to play with Danilo.

Also, I am about 2.5 hours from the St L and about 1.5 hours from Lake Ontario, both hold plenty of 40+ carp.

let me know if that fits in your plans. Tot ziens.

    Niels

PS. How are you going to bring your carp gear while flying? Do you have those mini Fox or Shimano rods? If you aren't bringing any, I have enough spare stuff to get us both on the bank.

  11. Hi Neil,

I got mine today (1/28) in central NY. I noticed the mistake in the pictures too. Too bad, because a picture is worth a 1,000 words.

Also, how do I get an e-version of the NACA? I would like that so I can print it in color and insert it in the article with the wrong pictures.

I will email Stewart to see if we can set up some QA/QC so that this does not happen again. A professional organization like ours with a high gloss magazine like that should not make these mistakes. I will see if we can put something in place to prevent this from happening again.

  12. Hi Herkel,

Yes, the carp contest is still going on. It has been for 2 years. It is actually a 3 county contest for carp, SMB, walleye, brown and rainbow trout and salmon.

The contest is going on right now. Look at www.fishodyssey.net. I fished it with Frank (RDBAIT). Jason (KARPER) was there too with his cousins. He swept all the prices last year because there was no competition (I couldn't go). He is leading the board with a 25# right now. You can easily beat that!!!

Good luck if you make it there. Gives you a good chance at some cash for any species you catch.

  13. Hi Louis,

Great fish. Both the brown and the King.

I actually caught a King of 18# 6 oz last saturday at Point Breeze. They were running in the creek. I was fishing for carp (trying to win the tournament) but all I got was a King on a pop up Mainline banana boilie.

Oh well ,the fillet was good albeit a little dry.

    Thanks for that nice writeup.

  14. HI John,

Great story. It is good to see you learn from your mistakes by going with a larger and stronger hook and tippet. They only thing I believe you also need to change is your hook. You need have a barb because all these weedbeds will prevent you from always having tension on the line and thus the carp can spit the hook.

Good Luck and keep us informed on any progress.

  15. HOI Mario,

Great pictures. Those mountains look just like the ones they have in Holland :D :D :D

Just kidding. That looks amazing. I have some hills in the background too, but nothing comparable to you.

I am glad I left Holland too (at least when it comes to carping). Try to go to a water in NL and get a few 20 and a decent chance for a 30 in one 4 hr session. Good Luck !!!

Let alone that you have to stay awake all night because otherwise your rods might be gone when you wake up in the morning.

    Niels (ex Dutch carper)
