  1. Hi Todd,

That shows you. You should have put it in your pond with some snakeheads and get some arapaimas and arowanas too.

Then we do not need to travel to Asia anymore but we can come to SC to catch some monster foreign fish :D:D

Saves us tons of money in travel, let alone all the malaria pills!!!!!!!

  2. Hi Mark,

The first thought that came to my mind was about 'other' Americans I meet during fishing; they are ecstatic when they catch a 10# channel cat (which is what they fish for) but when they catch a 20# carp, they detest it.

Just appreciate what you catch. If it doesn't fight well, you are using too heavy gear. Plus I cannot imagine a 50+ grassie not fighting as well as a 25# common.

Carpniels (Who BTW is jealous of you because he has no water at all where he can get a hold of grassies).

  3. Hi Pat (and others),

    Thanks for the replies.

Pat, I never knew you fished the entire island up and down in the ocean.

You said you are a southshore guy. Actually, my mother in law lives on the south shore (Bay shore) and I can be on the beach from the house in 10 minutes. I have tried to fish there a few times but except for a few undersize fluke, I never landed anything serious (I actually did hook a large fish (probably skate) that was so big I couldn't get it off the bottom so it got stuck in the rocks at the bottom of the breaker I fished on).

This 10 minutes beach is across the RM bridge from captree on fire island. Democrat point is there and lot's of 4x4s on the weekends on the beach. They say they catch stripers, I have just never seen that happen. I always fished the fire inland inlet close to the great south bay. At the end of the inlet is a breaker and a large hole 40 yards out that is deep. I have seen large blues and other fish, but I have had little luck. I will go there again when the reports tell me the fishing is better at the south than the northshore. Do you have any tips?

  4. Hi Guys,

After my Montreal trip it was time to go to the inlaws on Memorial Day weekend. I brought my light (2#) carprods with 50# PP and my trusty 3500Bs baitrunners.

My father in law was in the hospital and we visited him there. This prohibited me from going fishing on the Mem Day weekend. Mem day morning, his hart stopped, they reanimated and got his ticker to work again and sent him to ICU. He breathed again on his own on tuesday and they removed his breathing apparatus. He died 6/1/05 at 3:40AM.

Naturally, we had to stay another 10 days on LI and my wife and family had to arrange many things. I stayed to cook, clean, mow and watch the kids. The house was a sad place to be so I planned on going to the beach and fish a little (to clear the mind).

I went on 6/2 at 5:00 PM. I got to Sunken Meadow State Park at 5:30. Got my gear, gave some to my buddy (my wife's niece's husband who is an avid fisherman in Florida), and we walked to the outlet of the Nissequogue River (about 30 minutes. None of the normally present locals were there. We set up and cast one of the rods in. For us carpers: 4 oz. running rig with 3' rig and 6/0 octopus. Small cork float at 1' from the hook. I baited it up with a large piece of clam belly. This was cast in and drifted upstream with the incoming tide until it held bottom.

The other rod was used to cast some spoons, bucktails and the like. My buddy commented constantly that the hook was too big and that I should change it. Stubborn me (carpfisherman, what do you expect :D ) kept recasting with the same rig. After 1.5 hours, I heeded his comment and changed to a size 1 hook with a small piece of clam belly. Some of the local 'professionals' showed up (waders, fancy Lamiglas rods, Van staal reels) and said that it would be a little while for the fish to show up, since it was not high tide yet. After 15 minutes, a large tap on the rod and then another. I gave my casting rod to my buddy and took the rod from the rod holder. There was something on there. Sometimes resistance, sometimes not. I reeled it in and it was a fluke. And at 18" large enough to take home. So I recast the rod with new bait and cleaned the fluke and put it in the tacklebox.

As the sun was setting, an enormous jerk on the rod send it doubling over and the baitrunner started to run, I handed my casting rod to my buddy and grabbed the carprod. I turned the handle and disengaged the baitrunner. The drag started running. Not as hard or fast as a carp, but it ran. We walked along the beach towards the fish. It boiled a couple of times at the surface and kited right towards the beach and back. My buddy said that that is how sharks fight. I commented that we would loose it soon if it is one, since I do not use a steel leader. About 5 minutes into the fight I saw a silver shadow in the water. I said that it was a stiped bass, since they are silver. A few minutes later, it was close enough to land. I walked backwards and my buddy grabbed the fish as it was being beached. It was indeed a striper and it was huge!!!!!

When I tried to unhook it, I was a strange piece of lead on my line. And then a leader and a swivel I did not recognize. The stiper was hooked on someone else's rig!!!!! This guys mainline broke and the fish swam around with it. Then, for some unknown reason, the rig got entangled in my rig and bait and that is how I 'hooked' it. I still do not understand how this tangle did not let loose in the drill. My father in law must have been looking down from above!!

So I caught my first ever striper by accident. But it tasted all the same anyway!!

    Thanks

    StriperNiels

PS. the best thing about the entire trip was walking back to the car in my T-shirt and shorts across the beach with this huge fish over my shoulder and all the local 'professionals' looking and admiring it.

  5. Hi Todd,

Good to see a posting from you again. Hope things are good in SC.

I liked the picture of the gar. That is a nice large specimen. Then to think that came out of Santee. With your 50+ Buffs and grassies, is this lake Gods gift to southern fishermen??? Sounds like it.

I am going to try fishing for pike this year. I will let you know on the progress.

PS. the flavours you sent me a while back work well. The Banana nut is excellent. Caught them up to 29+ on it.

  6. Hi Lowell,

That is a fantastic result. That mirror easily does 20+. So take 20 as your new PB.

Might be time to look for a small foldable net that you can bring. Easier on the fish and you. I have some fairly nice ones that I used in the beginning of my carp career.

I hope you can make it up here on June 25th. That way you can show me some tricks to catching carp like that. Sounds like fun.

  7. Hi Guys,

After the birth of my second son, my wife allowed me to go to Montreal for a one day fishing trip for some large carp. I left saturday night at 8 pm and got there at 12 am. I chummed and went down to sleep. It started raining and before you knew it, it poured. I was under my groundsheet (my improvised tent) and at 1:30 the first carp hit. I got up and landed a nice high double. Unfortunetaly, I was all wet, so my sleepingbag did not like all that water on me. I had to get up every hour or so for another high double, low 20. At 4 am it stopped raining.

I moved to another spot in the middle of the seaway about 11 m to have a chance at some larger carp. I chummed and stayed for 6 hours and saw a few carp jump, but no takes. I reeled in to leave when something hit the line and took off. In de depths I saw something silver, which could not be a carp since they are all goldenbrown around this time. I drilled the fish and at the net I saw it was a Muskie. I landed and measured it at 30". My first muskie ever, on a hairrig!! With a pop up pineapple boilie!! My friend took a few pictures, and I have attached the best.

I went back to my original spot and caught one more carp, but my day was already a success.

Hope you guys like the picture.

  8. Hi Hunter,

When you get the St L heated up to 38 degree C (=102 degree F), I wil buy some of these pellets for the 15 minute breakdown time.

But by then I can probably scoop the carp right of the surface. :D:D:D

    Thanks

  9. Hi Guys,

As to Bob's 'banana' fingers; he DOES have them!!!

I fished with him three weekends in the last two years and the guy is 6'5" with big hands. Also, he like taking pictures from quarter front and quarter back, so that you can see the thickness of the carp's back. It is kind of an interesting angle and different from the standard perpendicular angle carp picture.

  10. Hi Kingcarp,

Nice writeup and a good picture of me too :D:D:D

I REALLY enjoyed fishing with you and the many things that I learned to finetune my carping techniques. It is good to get some different ideas and techniques from other carpers to keep you fresh.

And it was good to see that you do not need to fish only at night to catch carp in clear waters. That is always my problem in my local lake and I would like to fish and catich (!) during the day and not at night!!

  11. Hi Terry and Tony,

Indeed a good story with pictures about this fishing trip would be great for winter reading. And next time a camcorder: a DVD would sell like hot cakes both here and in Europe. And it would highlight that not all carp fishing needs to be bankfishing.

I have recently bought a boat too, so I might have to make a trip up there too. I even have a fishfinder already installed :D:D:D .

But that raises the question; Why would I not have a similar situation on my local lake? I catch fish in the margins or up to 15 feet deep. But the middle of the lake is 70 ft. What about the carp there?

  12. Hi Tim,

Thanks for the story. It is also a lot like the waters I used to fish in Holland. Except my water were lang narrow canals full of weeds and my fish were all old, ugly mirrors.

I'm still jealous though. Get that big one!!
