  1. Arrived at Cowan Lake early Friday morning with Rob and Scott. Rick and Joe had been there since Friday afternoon, but didn’t have much luck except a few pesky catfish. We quickly got set up and got some bait in the water. Phil and his buddy Alan showed up shortly after. Fishing was slooooowwww all day long. Carp were rolling out in front of us, but just didn’t seem to like what we were offering or had no intentions of feeding. The first carp, caught by Scott, didn’t come to the net until later that evening. He was trying out his new Fox Micron MX+ alarms and absolutely scared the crap out of all of us. Not hearing any beeps all day and then just hearing a one toner at high volume and tone almost caused a couple of heart attacks. That was about all of the action that happened on Friday. Gary showed up around 5 or 6pm and got set up. Rick and Joe had had enough and left shortly after. Around 10:30pm Scott and I had enough for the day so we headed back to our campsite, showered and got some much needed rest. Rob and Gary fished into the night, but did not have any luck.

Saturday was more of the same all morning and afternoon. Fish were crashing, but absolutely no beeps. We got a few showers which could have turned the fish on a bit. I somehow how had birthday luck on my side and caught 5 in a few hours. We fished until about 11pm that night and decided to call it.

Thanks to everyone that made it out! See everyone at Griggs!

  2. Finally got a hold of the park office about camping on the bank. Looks like they need a months notice for a "special event permit." Rob, Scott and I reserved a campsite on the other side of the lake so we have a place to sleep at night. Also, if no one plans on coming out, we might just fish over by the campsites.

Well we are already closing in on our 3rd scheduled fish-in this year. This was a very productive lake last year with the big fish going to Rob at 24lbs. There were also a lot of fish caught in the low to upper teens. We had over 20 fishermen on the bank last year and hope to have something similar this year. There is plenty of bank space for everyone and trees all around to provide shade if we so happen to get some warm, dry weather.

We should be there on Friday morning and stay until Saturday. There was talk about an event permit that could be bought to allow us to set up tents and fish/camp through the night. I will have to call tomorrow, this weekend or sometime during the week to find out if we can do that. If not, brolly's are allowed, but just don't get caught sleeping. :D

There are grills there if anyone is interested in bringing charcoal and grilling out.

    Hope to see everyone there!

  4. Well we are finally home from a pretty successful weekend on Lake Erie at East Harbor State Park!

Rob, Scott and I arrived at the lake on Friday morning around 8am. The weatherman was calling for rain all day long so we quickly set up our tent. By the time everything at camp was in order, we made our way out to the harbor and the rain followed. It rained pretty much all day long with an occasional break here and there. The fishing was very slow for this location which could be due to the colder than normal spring up north by the lake. Looking back at last years pictures there were actually leaves on the trees, but not this year. The water temperature read 45 degrees on Friday morning, but that would soon change on Saturday. We stayed out all day with only a few fish to show for our efforts. We decided to pack it up before the sun set and headed back to camp. They were calling for strong thunderstorms and heavy rain all night. There was probably only a break of about 2 combined hours with no rain or storms.

Finally it's 7am on Saturday morning! Partly cloudy skies are in the forecast with a high near 70 and no rain in sight. With all the rain that came down on Friday night the water temperature rose to 50 degrees. The harbor we fish is very shallow at about 2-4 feet deep so the fish congregate there in the spring to get away from the cold lake. A fair amount of fish were caught throughout the day until the sun really started beating down. We fished into the night and decided to call it quits around midnight.

    ON WITH THE PICTURES!

Not sure if this was the first fish of the session mainly because it was caught on Friday and that day is something I never want to remember.

Well that is the end of Friday's picture worthy fish. Saturday is when the real fishing was to be had.

Scott with one of his many fish. 16lbs 1oz. Most of these fish were very thick in the stomach despite what the picture shows.

23lb 2oz mirror from Rob. What an awesome fish! We had only fished this location once before and all fish seemed to be under 10-12 pounds. It was a nice surprise to hear the drag start peeling off when the hook was set. After a few minutes of battle, it was finally IN THE NET!

    k1c7fa.jpg

This was absolutely the most ridiculous fish I have ever caught. This fish must have taken 10-15 minutes to get in the net. 13 of those minutes were spent 5-10 feet from the bank because it DID NOT want to get close to the rocks. It pulled drag like it wasn't even trying and whenever it wanted. Every time is was near the bank it would blaze off again. It must have walked all three of us 50 yards down the bank. I really thought I had one of those 30 or 40's everyone talks about being in that harbor, but I was still happy when it tipped the scale at 25lbs 13oz.

At the end of the weekend I feel like it was a very successful fish-in. We had a few other guys fishing on the other side of the harbor that also did very well. Feel free to post your stories and some pictures of your fish when you get a chance.

Just want to thank all of those who attended and I will see everyone at Cowan Lake in May.

Rob(Lurch14), Scott(Spankis) and I will be arriving early Friday morning. We will be camping Friday and Saturday night and if there is anyone interested and splitting up the fees for a site let me know. I'm not sure how many are allowed per site but I would guess anywhere between 6-8. Just post in here and let me know if you will be attending.

    See you on the bank!

  6. Awesome! Getting pretty excited for this trip. With the warm weather and rains we have been having the past couple of days, the water may be getting near that magical 50 degree mark. :D Thats a fairly shallow lake from what I've seen on depth charts so that may be in our favor too.

  7. The closest place out I've fished out east near Byesville would be Salt Fork. The location may be a little rough to get to because we had to canoe in to it. We were at the campgrounds and the hill down to the lake was too steep to lug all of our gear down. Canoed in from the smaller beach. We only caught a few smaller carp and some catfish.

It looks like there may be some access near the marina on Salt Fork or the road that leads you to the marina. CLICK HERE

Looks like Senecaville Lake is also pretty close but I've never fished it or heard anything about it. Maybe this could be a good location? HERE

    Good Luck!

  8. Just got done finishing up the 2011 CAG Ohio Schedule. After taking a look at last years schedule I decided to make the fish-ins on Fridays and Saturdays instead of extending it through Sunday. This doesn't mean that you can't fish on Sunday, but the majority of anglers will be there on those dates. Bill is interested in hosting the event at Lake Loramie in early April, but the 8th and 9th were more suitable for him so it was switched it from the 1st and 2nd. After talk with a member, the East Harbor event was switched back to Easter weekend. More information about the events will be posted as the dates draw nearer.

A map with all the event locations set as push pins. HERE (Thanks TimJC)

Below is a link to the schedule as a .doc download. (Created with Google Docs so hopefully the formatting is correct)

Hope to see everyone on the bank!

  9. I take it all discussions have stopped since Ohio has a new forum. I have not seen one post here for a very long time. Since I cannot join the "other" site Ill try to continue this thread all by myself. I am going to make East harbor this year so whenever you have it works for me. I would like to host an early fort loramie fish in say early april.

It may only be me and Tom but we will have fun.

I must have missed all the threads you created in the Carp Locally Ohio section and the Regional section for Ohio. Can you post the links?

Here is a link to a thread discussing the social gathering we will have at BW3's. In this thread it also says that we will be having an in-person discussion of events for this years schedule. We will also consider the information posted in this thread as I will be bring my laptop to make the schedule on the spot.

  10. Hey Brian,

After I boil my corn, I usually let it sit overnight to cool and then put it in the fridge to help preserve the freshness. I think I've had corn in the fridge for 2+ weeks before starting to notice it turning. Personally, I don't like the fermentation that comes from allowing corn to set out, but others swear by it. I think it comes down to personal preference and what works for you.

Some people will also add rock salt to their bucket of corn to cope with the fermentation smell. It is also used as an attractant. Again, this comes down to what works for you. I am unsure how much to add so maybe someone could chime in with their experience.

Also, I keep mine in a 5 gallon bucket that is sealed and make sure there are a few inches of water over top of the corn.

    Hope this helps,

    Vince

  11. Join CAG Ohio at our annual social gathering at BW3's in Columbus. I just got off the phone and was able to reserve the party room. During this time I'd like to discuss the yearly schedule and get input on location and dates of fish-ins and of course PIG OUT!

    WHEN: Saturday Feb. 19, 2011

    TIME: 6:00 pm

WHERE: BW3's Party Room (Bethel Road, Columbus)

5240 Bethel Centre Mall (NW Corner of Bethel Road and Godown Road) Columbus,Ohio

    Directions: Click Here

I spoke with the manager and told him we could potentially have 15 people attending with a high number of 25 just to be sure. Please let me know if you are attending so I can give him a better number as the date draws nearer.

    Hope to see you there!

  12. Hey Brian, nice to hear from you. We fish East harbor at Lake Erie and this is usually done in the month of April. It's only fishable for a short period of time until the vegetation takes over. It will be on our schedule that will be made at our yearly gathering at BW3's here in Columbus. It will likely be in the 2nd or 3rd week of February on a Saturday evening.

Another place that might be of interest to you is the Maumee River. I have never fished there before, but CAG Ohio has held an event there. Here is a map of the area they fished. Click Here Also, here is a video of the inlet.
