  1. It's that time again! Another Fish-in/Multiple Fish-ins are scheduled for this month. July will be a bit different than any other fish-in. We will split the state into three regions; South, Central and North. This will be a time to discover a new body of water that hasn't been fished. You are not confined to your region, but I would like to see each region hold their own gathering to potentially put a new location on the map for next year.

I will let each region talk among themselves and decide on a location. This will be a one day event from Saturday 6am to Saturday 10pm. If you would like to extend it until Sunday at noon let me know.

Please feel free to post up any questions you may have. Thanks!

  2. Ohio has a Fish In scheduled for West Branch State Park, Jun 9-11th. http://parks.ohiodnr.gov/Portals/parks/PDFs/parks/Maps/West_Branch/westbranchparkmap.pdf

Exact location is at the east end of the lake where Gilbert Rd runs right into a large parking lot. https://www.google.com/maps/@41.144013,-81.0863203,17z

Camping is available in the park, however, it's not within walking distance to the fishing area and there is no camping allowed on the bank: open faced shelters are allowed.

A restroom is available in the area as well as a covered picnic area.

Hotels and restaurants are available within close driving distance to the venue.

This location has been a Fish In location several times and accounted for a lot of carp. Mostly mid to upper doubles with some low 20's mixed in. Action can come thick and fast at times with double runs common.

Both CAG members and non members are welcome to attend.

  3. Firstly, I'd like to apologize for not posting up more details about the event here on the CAG site other than the calendar entry. I'll be sure to post up all the details on subsequent events.

Rocky Fork / Jetson Bates Memorial Fish-in:

Another fish-in on the books! We had approximately 15 people attend this weekend to battle it out to become the 2017 "CARPGOD."

Sean set the bar at 17lbs 4 oz on Friday morning which he felt was going to be easily beaten as the weekend progressed. That didn't seem to be the case as many 8-14lb fish were being caught both Friday and Saturday. I finally managed a fish at 17lbs 5oz just beating out Sean's fish by just one ounce. I was able to up that weight when I caught an 18lb 2oz Carp on Sunday morning.

Larry came through again as always with a feast on Saturday morning and afternoon. Sausage, biscuits and gravy with eggs made to order were served up for breakfast. Brats and bacon cheeseburgers with all the fixins were made at lunch. We had plenty of sides as well to give us the energy to keep up with the fishing throughout the day. Thanks Larry and to those who contributed.

I’d also like to thank all of those who attended the first annual Jetson Bates Memorial. A trophy will be awarded at the 2018 Social to the big fish caught at 18lbs 4oz which just so happened to be me. 1f60a.png? Dave has been working hard on the trophy and it looks amazing! The license plate showed up on Saturday so Dave will be putting the finishing touches on the award soon.

Our next fish-in is scheduled for June 16-18 at West Branch in Akron. I apologize in advance, but I will not be able to make this outing. Kelly and I are heading to Maine for the week. If someone would like to step up and oversee things, that would be great! I will do everything I normally do leading up to the event. Let me know if you’re interested.

Signed up...long time lurker of the site. Been on several Facebook pages for a couple years as well. Carp angler from Ohio...not shooting to win but to compete with fellow Ohio anglers. I'm aiming for 4 fish over 25lbs.

Good luck man! Craig has his 31 already... Will be tough!

  5. As many of you may know East Harbor was switched to the Pit in Urbana due to forecasted weather conditions. If the wind blows just right at East Harbor the water will soon turn to a mud flat. This happened in 2013 so I was a bit concerned with it happening again this year.

Urbana: I arrived around 9am Friday morning and picked the location a normally fish. John had set up on the peninsula point fishing towards the houses, but switched back and forth a few times in an effort to catch showing fish. It was a fairly nice day with temperatures in the low 50’s and strong winds from the northwest. Phil and Larry made an appearance to check out the place around mid afternoon and decide to come back Saturday morning. Christian was the last person to arrive on Friday evening and set up between John and I.

Much like recent trips to the pit, action didn’t start until nightfall / early morning. My first fish came at 2:30am and was the biggest fish of the weekend at 23lbs 2oz. The next fish came an hour or so later but was much smaller. I managed a couple more fish during the day on Saturday, but the rest came at night and into Sunday morning.

I ended the weekend with a 23, 17, and eight or so fish in the 6-8lb range.

We had a total of 10 people show up to the event with the majority of them trickling in on Saturday. Larry brought hamburgers, brats, and all the fixins’ to get us through the day. Thanks Larry!

Mike Fields decided to fish East Harbor and luckily enough there was water! I’m a bit regretful I switched the venue now that I know the water was still there. Mike and I were in contact most of the weekend providing each other updates in each venue. Saturday he saw fishing showing early morning but didn’t have any takers. He went back Sunday and managed a 10lber early on and nabbed at 18lber as well.

Thanks to everyone who came out to the event this weekend. While there weren’t a ton of fish caught, I believe everyone had a pretty good time and enjoyed spending time on the bank together.

Our next Ohio event is on May 19th-21st at Rocky Fork State Park. I will post information soon.

    Anyways, Enjoy the pictures

  6. Hello Ohioans, I'm not sure how many people still browse this forum but we are in need of 8 anglers from Ohio to fill our 20 angler roster. Please reply to this thread of send me a private message if you are interested or have questions.

    Brief overview:
Michigan, Indiana and Ohio battle it out on the Saginaw River in a biggest 10 Carp per team/state tournament on May 6th and 7th.

Up to twenty anglers per team/state. Each team draws a section of the Saginaw river and fishes it Saturday and Sunday. Pre-baiting is allowed on Friday.

  7. Let's hit the ground running in 2017! The Social is over and now it's time to start looking forward to the first CAG Ohio fishing event, East Harbor.

As many of you know, Shawn Stump managed an absolute beast of a Carp weighing in at 40lbs 6oz last year. Many other nice fish were caught and this was likely due to how early we arrived in April. Getting there before the water warms and the smaller, fiestier males are feeding is the main goal.

(Here is some info taken from Craig's post last year)

Camping is available in the park, however, there is no camping on the bank, open faced shelters are allowed. The park ranger often patrols at night and as long as you're awake while bankside they don't have any issues. ( I am going to call next week to see if we can set up shelters and sleep on the bank. Fingers crossed!)

A restroom is available in the area as well as a covered picnic area. Hotels and restaurants are available within close driving distance to the venue but most of us just get a campsite which is within easy walking distance of the bank. Campsites generally run about $27 a night for primitive camping. I have attached a map where sites have been updated.

One problem with East Harbor, as with any west side Lake Erie venue, is that if you have strong westerly winds it can empty out. Great for viewing the venue, not so great for fishing soooooo....1 week prior to the event a "best guess" weather decision will be made and an alternate location selected and announced here.

If you have any questions feel free to post them up and I will try my best to answer them.

    See everyone in April!

Thanks to everyone who attended and I look forward to seeing you all at East Harbor on April 7th-9th. Tight lines!

  9. Hello Ohio Carp Anglers. I've finalized the Social for this year. It will be held at BW3's at 5240 Bethel Center Mall, Columbus, OH 43220 and will start at noon on March 4th.

Most of you know what the Social is all about. For those of you who don't, it's a time for all Ohio Carp Anglers to get together, eat tons of food, talk carp fishing, finalize the 2017 schedule and win a bunch of awesome carp fishing related raffle prizes. $1 per raffle ticket and 6 tickets for $5.

If anyone has questions please post them below or send me a message. I look forward to the 2017 CAG Ohio fish-ins and hopefully some members can break their PB's!

    Thanks!

  10. Back from a bitterly cold weekend in Urbana, Ohio. We had 7 anglers (Matthew S. Hollar, John Mayer, Christian Webber, Craig Welch, Timothy Miller, Scott Erlenwein and myself) show up for this event and Phil Davenport even swung by to check on the venue.

The fish had lockjaw most of the weekend which is quite a change from when Christian, John and Corey fished it in September. Most of my fish came at night which was very tough physically due to the mid 20 degree temperatures. My biggest fish of the weekend was 21lbs with a 15oz tumor on its face so we can call it 21lbs 15oz in total.

Saturday we had a nice chicken noodle soup lunch which kept everyone warm and then deer steaks for dinner. Not bad for some bank side cooking!

I am considering this venue in the summer next year since it is a deep pit. Water temperatures will still be cool and being spring fed helps as well. Let me know your thoughts.
Thanks to everyone who showed up! If there are new Carp anglers out there that haven't been to a fish-in before I highly suggest checking one out next year. We hold them all over Ohio so keep en eye out for next years schedule which will be posted after our Social gathering in February. A lot of knowledgeable, friendly people attend these events and are often gracious enough to give out end tackle (hooks, swivels, rigs, leads, or even bait) to get started.

Here are a few pictures to enjoy!

Oct 21 at 7 AM to Oct 23 at 12 PM

1810 County Road 17-A, Rayland, OH 43943-7962, United States

Rayland Marina on the Ohio River. A great place for numbers and the occasional surprise. We've have a few flatheads up to 30lbs and even a 20+lb Grass Carp.

$10 dollars per tent per night.

Fires are permitted so bring wood if you want to stay warm.

We will have a cookout Saturday night so feel free to bring a dish. So far:

    Shawn: Sausage/Brats
    Vince: Soup
    Corey: Deer Steaks
    John: Potato Salad
Phil: Paper plates, napkins, knives and forks, a couple bags of chips and brownies

You can pull right up to the river as long as there hasn't been a ton of rain. If it has been raining you will have to walk from the parking lot.

    See everyone there

Good job.  I'm lucky to have figured out how to turn on my computer.  Such a program would make it easy to track and finalize standings for tourney results.

That was the intention for next years Midwest Regional. If any tournament director is doing it pencil/paper they would save a lot of time using Microsoft Excel or the OpenOffice variant.

  13. Deleted my other post as I saw one of the calculations was incorrect.

Just wanted to add this as well.

With some help from a co-worker, I have developed a spreadsheet that allows for easy and auto calculation of top 10 fish (This can be done for any number of fish)

The angler, lbs, and oz are entered to the left and the weight is auto calculated and sorted when more fish are entered. The bold text represents the top 10 fish and the grey text represents fish that have "dropped off" the top 10 big fish. The total weight is show on the far right in lbs and oz.

We had a "bragging rights" competition with a few anglers fishing in Urbana (Erie vs. Urbana). This was our first chance to try out my spreadsheet and it worked pretty well. I granted edit access to whoever had the link to the spreadsheet stored on my Google account.

As you can see below it was a pretty close battle but Erie pulled it out!

    Erie -142lbs 0oz

    Capture.PNG

    Urbana - 140lbs 15oz

  14. Had a great time as always at the CAG Ohio events. I didn't come away with the numbers I had last time when I fished it, but I did manage my first lake Smallmouth Buffalo. All of my past Buffalo's have come from the Scioto and Ohio Rivers. Craig catching the 18 makes me think Erie has some monsters that could push 50-60lbs.

Here are a couple photos I took during the stay as well as some photos I ran through Google's photo editor.
