  1. Hey guys

I'm going to attempt to fish a river (the willammette) for the very first time in my life, I've got a few questions before I head out tomorrow:

    - I don't have an sky facing pod, or even banksticks tall enough to get the same effect, it hasen't rained here in over a month and when I looked at the surface, it seemed reletivly calm, do you think I could get away with just using my regular horizontal pod?

    - I don't have any gripper leads, I got some 3oz pears, square pears and distance leads, would this surfice to hold the bottom of the current isn't too bad?

    - I'm assuming backleads would be detremental if there is any current?

    - spodding / ground baiting, again if there's current I'm also guessing this wouldn't be very adventageous as it would just be swept away or not even hit the bottom of the area I'm fishing?

    - slack lines? again because I can't rise my rod tips, should I fish a slack line to account for current?

Sorry for the noob questions, I've fished many lakes for many years, but really want to give a river a go. i'll be starting in a small bay that feeds a small creek/stream, it's not directly in the body of the rivers path, the main river is directly connected about 6-800 yards away.

any help / advise / anything would be great :)

  2. Youkay's PB: "I'm not fat, I'm big boned!" :)

Congratulations! cool pod too! is the rod/reel separation limited by the width of the buzzbars?

Hehe, I'd never seen anything like it!

for the pod, I have the 2 rod version snagbars, they are about 9" long, space is a bit limited but i still manage to get my shimano longcast BR's side by side and it's so compact the whole thing breaks down and goes in a slim roll in my rucksack, i absolutely love it.

  3. Thanks guys!!

I am still beating myself up for not having scales with me! Hope I can catch it again next weekend lol.

Drew, I'll shoot you a message next time I head down there and make some rigs with you, mine are far from perfect but it's good to see what other people use and take things from it - I learnt most of my stuff from Andy and various DVDs over the past 6 months

I just looked at a quick video i took of that fish still in the net lying on the floor - it looks like a dustbin lid! the pictures really, really don't show how ridiculous that fish looked!

  4. awesome fish and congrats!!

    BTW is that pod stable?

didn't budge an inch on either run. I need to get a couple of british pound coins or a big flat head screw driver to really tighten the thumbscrews when it's setup, but in all honesty, I don't think it would be needed, it's rock solid without even fully tightening up! (and looks the nuts too!)

  5. Got a text message at around 8:30 last night from Andy AKA blankman saying he'd got a lot of stuff done and wanted to go fishing today. It was last minute since I was working hard myself but I've been going stir crazy not fishing since our recent 8 day epic fishing adventure. Plus, I really, really wanted to test out my brand spanking new Matrix super slinky patriot pod. (BTW - Johnson Ross tackle have everything matrix in stock, the best prices, and quickest shipping / friendliest service ever, I'm now their number 1 fan!)

We set off at 6:10am and we're setup and eating mcdonals breakfast by around 8am. The first thing I did was unwrap and setup the matrix pod - this is undoubtedly the best piece of kit I have ever even seen, let alone owned!!

About 2 hours into the session I get the strangest bite, it was a half drop back, then run a bit, then drop back type deal. Never had one like that and had no idea what to do, I tried to time the hook set as it ran but made a donkeys mess of it, when I eventually felt the fish I knew it was big, it put a massive bend in my rod, swam off about 40 yards then popped off :D

Another hour goes by filled with encouragement of the run, then my new mate came over and sat in front of me for 20 mins.

It rained pretty much most of the day, I was sat out in it wearing a fleece and regular pants, got completely soaked, then got the best screaming run I've ever seen, the fish must have run at least 40 yards in the 5 seconds it took me to stand up and strike. As soon as I hooked into it I knew this was a PB and screamed for blankman's assistance. With full side strain it was in complete control and only came back around when I let the tiniest amount of slack on the line. I had some huge rocks and snags in front of me and the water was really shallow, landing this beast was going to be a challenge. Andy came to the rescue, at full stretch managed to net it in about 1.5ft of water right in front of a huge rock.

The first time I've ever been carp fishing in my entire life without my scales - and Andy had forgotten his too! This was a FAT fish and the pictures really don't do it justice, it was the most bizarrely fat fish for it's length I've ever seen and we called it around 25lbs.

My Best fishing day ever. Can't wait to get out there next week and get some bigger!! Better believe i'll have 2 sets of scales with me!!! Thanks blankman for the ride and incredible net job!! :)

  6. you'll also notice that all 3 of his rods are still in his pod :D

great pic, terrible photoshop! blurs all over the place, mainline missing, completely wrong angle considering the pressure he's putting on it....

yup!!! still awesome... but i pulled it up in pshop an its very apparent once u zoom in... even with out zooming it you can see the blur between his knees. the blue at the hook.

still awesome, an my new background photo :)

  7. The day started early, too Early. Up at 5:30 to assess the wind / rain before making final desicion on setting out carping for the day. Forecast was horrible, whole week has been horrible. 40 degrees with 20-30 MPH wind.

Sod it! what else can you do on an Easter weekend, right?

Got to my swim a little late after faffing around for hours getting ready, oh was it cold. with the wind beating through my bivvy it felt ~30 tops. My usually calm and peaceful lake had turned into the atlantic ocean, waves crashing at my feet and spray hitting me in the face - definitely not a good sign.

3 hours in and not a sniff then a huge wind gust unpeggs my bivvy and takes it for a ride 50 yards down the bank with one of the pegs almost taking my eye out.

After chasing down the bivvy and deciding to pack it in for the day I was sat in direct force of the brutal wind squishing my bivvy back into its case when my right rod takes a little bit. Jumped up and it stopped, jedi mind tricked it for a few seconds and it roared off!! couldn't believe it, a take in this weather with the water not even at 40!

Fish didn't even fight, lay on its back and just let me bring it in. Took a snap and my battery died in the cam. Let it go, probably around 8lbs. Had a strange but good feeling about where I picked it up from so I decided to chuck it back out with a bag on and brave the wind and rain to see if I could get another bite.

less than 40 mins later I get a really strange feeling so decide to start filming my rods, another 5 minutes after that another screaming run!!! this time I caught it on camera woo hoo!

Fought hard for 15 mins then gave up at the bank and let me net her. My New PB - 17.2lbs. Had a bit of tail damage but other than that was pristine, got the whole thing on camera so I made a video. I'm so made up, haven't had a fish out of there in 2 months trying, then to get 2 in one day and 1 of them be my new PB.... Extatic!!

Video is kinda awesome, Couldn't take regular pics so if you want to see the awesome take, then release - watch it :):D:P

  8. Another Portlander!!

    Hi Sniper,

    Hello CAG crew

just checkin in I'm Olivier aka Sniper moved from Paris France 3 years ago to Portland OR and I love big river carping lucky me I'm fishing the mighty Columbia river and the all usa is full of big rivers that Iwish to fish in.

    talk to you soon

  9. Quick bump, hoping someone can help me identify this fish... I've been looking around online all day and found a few similar pictures, they are all listed as "fully scaled mirrors"

    example: http://media.photobucket.com/image/fully+s...mirror.jpg?o=15

I was 100% sure it was just a common with random scaling, but after seeing others list them as mirrors - really peaked my interest, if in fact there are mirrors of "any" kind in that lake i'll visit it more often!

    Thanks.

  10. Well, after some serious bank hours the last 5 weeks, I finally got into fish!

The morning started with a monumental cockup regarding the daylight savings time and ending up being out of bed at 4:00am regular time and out of the door fishing by 5 (6am actual time) Got to a new lake never fished before only to find out those fine folks at weather prediction services got it horribly wrong - 40 degrees with 20mph wind feeling like 32. bloody cold and not the best conditions for the gear I brought (ultralight rod, quivertipping)

Gave up after 2 hours, no idea if I had any bites or not and headed for home. It was still early so decided to go to my old stomping grounds for commons anywhere between 2oz and 12lbs.

Second cast on my new lake got me tangled with a duck (or mallard) luckily for him, it struggled free and I was able to keep fishing. 20 mins in and the bites came thick and fast, hit my first bite hard, set the hook and fought for a good 4-5 mins on my ultralight gear, felt decent, 10lb+ at least. Got it a foot away from my net and the hook popped out :)

15 minutes later, I'm in again, this is an even bigger fish! 4-5 miniute fight and *SNAP* my rod broke! felt bigger than the last, possible 13lb+ took a huge lunge and my little baby couldn't handle it.

a good hour or so passes missing a lot of smaller bites (with half a rod!), then I hook into what this little lake is famous for, the 6-9lb pristine virgins. put up a decent fight but I didn't want to take any chances so I horsed it in and landed it.

Finally - think its my 3rd or 4th fish of the year, after hundreds of bank hours, so relived, what a stunning looking fish though!

and a dorsal / tail shot!!!

    post-5052-1268606765.jpg

  11. they look a damn sight better than my first rigs :)

mostly everything with carp fishing is trail and error, a few tips i could give you though -

if that black stuff around the eye of the hook is shrink tube, shrink it down at an angle so the point of the hook is slightly turned in on it self, that will help the hook flip over the the fish takes the bait and get a good hookhold

The one with the corn ontop of the boilie, make the hair a tad longer if your going to use 2 baits, they need room for movement, if your trying to balance the boilie on that rig with the corn, it wont move very freely in the water... lengthening the hair will give it that ability to move around a bit and look less stiff.

hooks seem well balanced for the bait size

I know some of you will get a chuckle out of this , but I am still new to the whole hair rig idea and I am still not sure if this looks right?

  12. Howdy Guys and Gals!

I'm orig from England, moved to Oregon 5 years ago, got married and stayed here. I fished my whole life back in England, just starting to get back into the sport and man are things different over here!

I'm glad I'm not the only dedicated carp angler around, the funny looks I get hauling all my gear around my local lakes anyone would think I was completely bonkers!

Looking forward to getting to know you all and sharing epic fishing adventures.
