  1. After having caught more than I could have asked for last year, I have found out how much fun it can be to help others to put a few fish onto the bank...

Being back here in Germany, I went out with my brother two days ago to a lake which he had fished on and off for 7 years, without catching a single fish there. It is a medium-sized privat gravel pit with some 12 carp in it. They get "hammered" pretty hard at times, so the carp have seen a lot and fishing can be tough. In the whole of last year, only one carp was caught there.

So I helped my brother Christoph with some careful location and very targeted pre-baiting. Then we moved in when the weather was right. We used quite sophisticated rigs (something new to me again, after years in the US) and as always, quality bait.

Long story short, Christoph caught 4 fish in one night, inlcuding the lake record at 33lbs... "Over the moon" would be a fitting description of his state of mind.

    Check out the pictures at

    Christoph Carp Pictures

You might notice on the pictures the trees in the water, which are only the tip of the iceberg, with many more submerged debris around. Usually more than half of the carp get lost in fight - Christoph managed to get four out of four...

As for me? - I blanked (happily, I must add...)

    Keep 'em coming,

    Matthias

  2. I know the size may be a bit hard to tell, but this is one of the very big carp of Cassien spawning.

Picture taken several years back, when we were making a video at the water. Of course we were careful not to overdo it, but you actually touch the fish as they were swimming through your legs. They just did not care. Doesn't happen too often that you have 50lbs+ fish at arm's length in the wild...

  3. Thanks for the compliments.

And for those who were interested, I used an analog camera for those pictures, loaded with slide film. Film was Fuji RVP, and the gear happened to be from Nikon. Also, I used a polarizer filter for some shots. All shots were taken with a good tripod.

    Tight lines,

    Matthias

PS: Scott, I don't think I am the one to tell you how to fish and where, but all the buffs I had came from the west side of the lake.

  4. After 2 ATCs, unfortunately, I can't make it this year.

Looks like a terrific turn-out, though, and I wish all of you bent rods, loads of carp, a good social maize boil, tight lines, many PBs, of course a new state record, getting (not too) drunk on 6th Street, a bunch of buffs, wet nets ...

... in a nutshell, the whole "Magic Madness" load of stuff!!

    Cheers from Germany,

    Matthias

  5. Tim -

    Excellent fish! Congratulations...

I'm always surprised by how many of the big fish are caught either at the very start or the very end of a session. Quite odd.

It was nice to meet all of you guys down at Town Lake last week, brief as it was! How else did y'all fare?

BTW, slow going for me in terms of buffs, too. Just one at about 23lbs, that's it.

  6. Carp fishing photos can be incredibly inspiring, and have played their part to get me into this sport. Globetrotter's swim thread is a good example for this.

Now, what were the carp fishing pictures that have inspired you early on and continue to inspire you?

Let me start with a fish from the mid-80s that was caught on Cassien. It was in an old Shimano catalogue on the baitrunner page. I cut out the picture and posted it on my door - I was just in total awe.
