  1. Blackfoot is MUCKING FAGIC as Mick would say....LMAO I just wish it was a hour away instead of 5 because I would be there every weekend. ;)

I wish it was 5 hours away instead of 13 LMAO

I think a lot of the appeal for me is that it is awesome being able to bivvy up and fish for a week without anybody coming and bothering you about rules, or no fishing after dark signs being posted every few feet like the majority of waters I have encountered in the USA.

A truly magical place. Doesn't hurt that it is full of lovely mirror carp either :D

  2. LOL thanks Mick I cant wait to get back there and do it again. Only problem now is I have a job lol so that is going to put a bit of a damper on my fishing hahaha........ :o

Congrats on getting a job Chris. I'll let you know how it is fishing when I get back from my trip there in July...lol

  3. Andy

do you have any idea of weather there in late august???

I collect information before my trip there in late august, so i appreciate all info :)

The average temperature at night in August is in the low 40s. The average for the day is in the 80s.

  4. How cold was there in nights and days?

The coldest night was 28 degrees. There were several nights where it got down to the low 30s. During the days it was anywhere between low 40s and mid 50s. It got to 66 one day. The wind was pretty bad most of the time,

    It was epic.

  5. Not sure about the firewood, cant help it but ive always been a bit oldskool about lights at night etc

But i'll roll with it,i just hope its not a necessity :D could be good for getting vehicles out of mud too so i may pick some up ;)

That takes me back to the UK...I cut my teeth on waters where a light at night would get some poor unsuspecting soul beaten up :) . I used to use the back light off my bike so that if I did spill any light it would be red and wouldn't get me thumped!

    Ahhh good times...

I haven't seen much of a difference over here when having a fire or not...I can blank equally well with or without one

  6. No funny looks from this direction lol. I am going to see if I can scrounge up some fire wood I have a feeling its gonna get cold at night brrrrrrrr

That is the first thing I am going to do when I leave American Falls Wednesday morning before heading up to Blackfoot. When we went up in August '09 we just loaded up the back of the truck with firewood and drove real slow - it ended up being a lifer saver literally when this group got stuck in the mud and they had no warm clothing and they had a baby with them! I had to drive one of them back to a spot 45 minutes away where they could use a cell phone to call for help while the rest waited around our fire. This was all in the middle of the night! I am packing my truck with a view to leaving enough room for a bunch of firewood. There was nuthin' to burn up there...

At least when it is that cold you don't need to worry about the beer getting warm...:P

  7. Now that is some funny chit!! Brilliant idea though. I will be fishing big snowman baits at night...I thought an 18mm popup with a 20mm bottom bait was going to get some strange looks from you two. Glad we will all be doing our bit to raise the water levels!

  8. I just got this from one of the guys who fishes locally and enters the fly fishing tournament at Blackfoot:

    ==================================================================================================

"I met up with several of my fellow carp competitors Friday night at a party. We are all concerned about our tournament because of this awful wintery spring. As of today, they are working on the roads. There is more snow back there than in recent memory. My prediction is that the roads will be rough but doable. As long as we don't have a major snowstorm or big rain while you are visiting. I just hope the water is warm enough for carp to eat. "

    ==================================================================================================

I told him that just a couple of hours of sun on shallow water is enough to get the carp rooting around even when it is bitterly cold, so I am not worried about that. The road situation looks a bit dicey...especially if you opt for the prius Chris

At least American Falls has plenty of proper roads!!

  9. Andy I am not sure on the weather but by looks of it most reservoirs around boise are being dumped because the snow pack up on the mountains is still over 100% so hopefully that will level out soon. I gotta see if there is a online spot to watch levels over there. I hope to be able to spend more than just the weekend there but time will tell on that.

I think that we have radios but I gotta check. I am not sure what vehicle I will be taking over there yet but knowing what eachother is driving will help us find eachother too that and seeing somebody out there using 12' rods will be a dead give away haha...

I will be in a black Harley Davidson edition F150. I will stand out from all the fly fishermen because I will be the one with motionless indicators ....living up to my name.

  10. Karl said that early in the year like this they tried near the damn and didnt have ANY luck and even ran a fish finder over the area and saw NOTTA.... He said we will prob have to head to the shallows where they saw TONS of fish. But as Mick said there will be time to move around a bit so we will SOON SEE :D

Yeah, that makes perfect sense. I will be coming in from the Soda Springs direction - the roads seem to be better - so I will spend some time scouting around. There is no cell service up there so we need some way to find each other. I have walkie talkies - does anybody else who is going have some? We could pre-arrange a channel and try to link up that way.

Idaho, do you have a better idea yet of whether or not you will be there any days in addition to the weekend?

    Andy

  11. I think if we fish in the same area as everybody else seems to fish - by the dam section up the NW end of the lake - then we stand a good chance of doubling up on some of the other fish people have caught. (hopefully one of the beautiful 30s that have come out from there :P )

I wonder though based on the time of year and the water temp if a lot of fish will be down in the shallows. The fly fishing guys hold their tourney down there at the southern end in May because they see a lot of the carp move into the shallows (makes sense I guess). At least we have enough time to make sure we get it right if the first day or so is too slow and we have to move. Have you guys made plans to meet and fish in a certain area?

I can't believe tomorrow morning at 9am it will be exactly 2 weeks until I leave - this is going to be EPIC!

  12. Andy better go rent a trailer lol.

Mick I am not sure but I can try and call a local tackle shop tomorrow if you would like me to.

Time is gonna fly for sure before you know it we will be netting up some beautiful Idaho MIRRORS :D

Here is a pic of my boy with a Blackfoot fully scaled 19lber (apparently about to become a fully scaled minus one ~8 )

I might be going back to Blackfoot with him this summer...July timeframe.

  13. Did my licence on-line it turned up in about a week, just for those that want to plan ahead, time is ticking on the exitometer

Just ordered mine today. I noticed there was an option for '2nd pole stamp for under 14 and short term license' on the page as well. Might be worth checking out if anybody out there is put off by the high cost of the non-resident yearly license...

  14. So - originally my plan was to leave for Blackfoot on the Tuesday 5/17, arriving sometime Wednesday. As I sit here and think about it, I came up with a new plan - why not take the Monday (5/16) off as well, giving me the whole previous weekend as well as the actual Fish In weekend. So I think I am going to leave Saturday 5/14 and head for American Falls, and fish there until Wednesday, and then leave for Blackfoot from there. 65lb mirror carp here I come.

Of course, being Blankman  there is the distinct possibility of the American Falls carp going into stealth mode and disappearing up the other end of the lake for the 3 days I am there, but I'd rather be there than at work...

    BRING IT ON!

  15. Thinkin bout it. Should be a blast. BUT, on May 20, the Soda Springs ave high temp is 64, the ave low is 36. Might be a rather chilly blast for us SoCal types.

    Dale,

I transplanted from Florida a couple of years ago, so I am not exactly thrilled at the prospect of a week in potentially subzero temps, but at 6100 feet up, it's never exactly warm at night  . I ordered a Trakker Tundra 3-in-1 suit on Saturday - just in case of course...

I heard that drinking whisky helps with the cold ;)
