  1. Sounds like the early bird caught the carp! Just amazing that when all the fine carpers in the area hit the bank now, that so many different techniques and used.

Thanks for the report and a couple of fine fish there!

  2. What a terrific read and pics! Thanks for taking the time to entertain those of us who weren't able to get out a and fish on such a nice spring morning.

Looked like a great way to send the day and you proved that it isn't always about the catching.

  3. Nice write up and pics, whats with the yellow tag on the swan is it the cooking time or something!

Pretty much all of our swans in the harbour area here seem to have been captured and tagged. I always thought this was done by the RBG( Royal Botanical Gardens )for research and such.

And thanks for all the comments y'all. I always have time to take more nature shots when the actually fishing is slow. lol

  4. I decided to hit the canal for one final hurrah before the harbour waters warm up and the bigguns get active in the bay.

It was a sunny and mild morning, for the most part, and nice to be able to set up on the bank without having to layer up in a winter coat and ski pants.

It was also nice to actually see feeding bubbles occasionally again. I still decided to put out just a couple of kernels of corn on a hair with a small amount of my spring method( with no freebees )around an inline weight.

The morning started slowly and I was glad when a fellow angler dropped by to ask if he could join me at the swim. A very interesting fellow who set up next to me with his Korean telescopic rod( no reel )and a Korean float. He also showed me some floats he crafted himself, which were beautiful, and even offered to give one to me. I politely declined, as I'm not a float fisherman yet, and I thanked him just the same.

My bite alarm signaled a run but when I lifted the rod there was no weight and my bait flew back at me. That was the only excitement for about an hour or so and even my new friend left to try another spot. I hope he was rewarded.

Oh well, I had plenty of company when the resident swans showed up.

Someone can correct me but judging by the sound of their honking, they must be Trumpeters. They really sound like trumpets being played badly. lol

It wasn't long afterwards that the bite alarm went off again and this time I set the hook into a good running fish. After a nice tussle on my little 9-foot stalker, a real beauty common came to net to make my morning.

Just a hair shy of 10lbs, it was a welcome fish on an otherwise slooooow morning.

The rest of my time was spent wishing for another fish while watching the waterfowl and other signs of spring.

A darn nice way to enjoy the 1st of May. Now it's time to rig up the for some of the big fellas that are awaiting in the harbour.

I hope everyone has a great season of carping ahead!

  5. I caught a carp once flyfishing. I was casting a wooley bugger for bass in the Speed river and a carp comes by and gulps it down. The rod was a 5 weight I got mostly for resident trout and bass. Certainly not anything the size of that carp. Anyhoo, that was probably the best best fight I ever had on that rod.

  6. Man, it sounds like you rneed to be an aquatic biologist! lol Thanks for that.

Hey Mark, I'm sorry we never took a pic of the hybrid you caught a few weeks back at that spot. Do you remember it? It was one BIG hybrid and that gun metal colouring was unlike anything I've seen before. About as purdy a fish as I've ever seen.

  7. ...Good siZe carp for there aswell, welldone

Ya, it was a pleasant surprise. I downsized my presentation for the smaller commons and hybrids and used a tiny hook and a 6lb leader to the hook. It may have helped me hook him, but certainly didn't help when I had to gain ground on it after the runs.

  8. Well, with the weather man calling for a warm, sunny day, I just had to head over to my swim today in the hopes of finding some active spring fish. I even watched a few recorded episodes of 'The Session' last night just to get me primed for the day! lol

Got there just in time to enjoy a nice sunrise.

I baited up with a small handful of method packed around an inline weight and a couple of kernels of sweet corn threaded onto a hair rig. Nice and simple.

Almost right away, the bite indicator started registering an occasional beep or two so I patiently awaited a take. Finally, a prolonged beeeeeeeeeeeeep and I knew I had a fish on.

After a spirited tussle from the little fellow, my 2nd ever hybrid came to the net.

After a couple of missed fish, things really got quite so I just started observing a bit of nature. Lots a diving ducks and some jet black and white ducks I couldn't identify along with, of course, these two.

Also found it really cool to see these fresh deer tracks. I wonder how far behind him I was. lol

Things had quieted down so I decided to hit another spot. I picked up my gear and drove a little ways away and although the water was still murky at this spot from our earlier rains, I gave it a go for an hour. With no results, not even a line bump, I moved on to a third spot. Baiting up again with my early spring method mix and some sweet corn, I hoped for a little more action before it lunchtime.

Without even a pre-emptive peep or two, the alarm screamed away and I grabbed the rod and held on! The fish took me for a terrific run and I hesitated applying too much pressure because of the lighter set-up I was using at time.

Holding my breath with every run and headshake, I got the fish back to the bank and, while fumbling to extend the handle of my net, the top half of my stalking rod popped off! AAARGH!!!!!!! Don't ask me how, but I was able to get it connected back in place and guide the fish into the net( Phewww! ).

A fellow who had observed the comedy took this pic of me and my fish.

A fun morning and I hope everyone got to enjoy a bit of this great spring day!

  9. That was a thoroughly enjoyable view Boyz! The clarity of the video was awesome a lots of fun to watch sitting here in the computer room while the rain pours outside.

I also really like the way you guys explain your presentations. That`s especially gonna help a lot of newbee carpers learn about rigging for carp and probably help them enjoy the sport more.

  10. Wow, well done Hawkwise! So I guess it's finally warmed up enough for ya, eh? lol

Those are great numbers for this time of year. In the one pic, do you have your method packed on a small feeder or do you have it just packed on a inline weight?

  11. Well, the weatherman called for sunshine and warmth today, so I packed up and headed out to our 'winter' swim this morning.

It was nice and sunny to be sure but the brisk wind made it feel like winter hadn't left quite yet. Anyhoo, I fixed up a little sweet corn on a hair rig and bolt, pitched out my offering, and waited for the bite alarm to tell me there were some carp in da hood.

Nothing for an hour, then a steady beeping from my alarm, a hook set and the fight was on. Nothing very big but a good tussle on my 9-foot stalker. And a first for me. This was actually my first hybrid. A chunky little fellow who gave a good account of himself.

I gotta say, after blanking my last few times out, I welcomed this fish like a 30lbs plus common in the summer! lol

A nice morning with lots of waterfowl and other birds flittering about trying to may a 'love connection.'

This is a great time of the year to be outside even if it's a tad early to get into those multi-fish days of summer.
