  1. I packed the carp gear in the car this morning before leaving for work so I could stop by Pier 8 on my way home and get my midweek fishing fix in.

The harbour is a busy little place, even on a weeknight. There was a regatta on with racing to enjoy, as well as plenty of sailboats plying the water.

I catapulted some maize close in to the pier about 10 yards out and cast out my bolt-rigged kernels on a hair and waited.

This was the first time fishing with a store-bought hair-rig. I've always rigged my own presentations but Fishing World had some nice braided hair-rigged hook links complete with anti-tangle sleeves. Tubing held the hair contoured to the hook( just like I've seen in the English carping DVDs ), which I've never tried to do myself yet.

At about 5pm, the Fox bite alarm screamed a steady beep and I set the hook confidently with my new rig. After a nice tussle with a fish that gave a lot of itself, particularly at close quarters, I asked a kind fellow watching to help me with the net( Thank you to whoever you are ). I unhooked the little beauty on my brand new unhooking mat I just purchased specifically for the piers.

Not huge by harbour standards but one of my better ones from Pier 8; it weighed 13lbs on the mini Rapala digital scale..

Just a gorgeous afternoon and evening to be out and enjoying the return of summer( lol ). Here's our Harbour Tour boat, pretty familiar to Hamiltonians who frequent the waterfront.

Nothing doing for an hour so I continued slinging out bait and at about 6:30 I had my second fish. Not quite a big as the first but fun none the less. The huge smile on my face is due to the fun comments and interaction I was having with the little group of spectators who had gathered around me at that point.

Although I had one run-and-drop on the rod lift, I ended up going 3 for 3 with fish I stuck, so I have say I'm pleased with my commercial hook-link and hair-rig. It was also nice not to have to wait for the weekend to get out and wet a line.

    AAAAAHHH! PIRATES!!!!!

  2. That was a great report of a couple of really nice sessions, Hawkwise. I've never had a 13 fish day nore have I bested a Mirror yet, so a hardy contratulations( with just a smattering of jelousy ).

Thanks for posting. Looks like a little piece of paradise there and a great venue to wrestle with those river carp.

  3. What a day Mark! Those are some lovely lean river rockets there. Real stunners.

Thanks for posting the details of your day. I have GOT to try my pineapple pop-ups next time out. I always bring 'em with me but seldom fish 'em.

I've met Steve on the bank on a couple of occassions, myself, and have always enjoyed chatting carp with him. He's forgotten more about carp fishing than I'll ever know!

  4. Thanks for the comments guys. And I'll keep that in mind about the pier, Mark. Not very much different from other types of fishing, I guess. When the windward shoreline gets stirred up, so do the fishies.

  5. The work day couldn't go by fast enough, which is kinda typical for a Friday. I was planning to fish the bay right after work so I guess that made the time tick by even slower!

At about 5pm, I arrived at Pier 8 to find that the east winds had the water just a rockin and a rollin. Do you guys fish in those conditions or do you look for quieter water??? Tonight, I preferred to look for a calmer shoreline so I jumped back in the car and headed elsewhere on the harbour.

I had my rod locked and loaded in the pod shortly before 6pm at my new location and settled in.

I kept hearing a rustling in the bushes behind me but every time I turned around, I couldn't see anything moving about. Well, the fishing was slow, so I went for a walk and I believe I found the culprit. At least I think this little bunny was the fellow who was scurrying about in the bushes behind me.

Occasionally, the bite alarm registered some short bleeps and I realized; 'They're here and bumping my line.'

Finally, at about 7pm, I had my first take and first 'fish on.' After blanking my last few times out, I made sure that I enjoyed the moment as I played the carp carefully to the shore.

The fish fell to a bolt rig with a single corn pop-up nestled next to a couple of kernels of maize on a hair.

Over the next two hours, several more fish had my bite alarm screaming and by the end of the session, I had banked 4 fish between 8lbs and 12lbs. Not exactly bragging size but a fun summer night of carping.

Plus, I got to enjoy a beautiful sunset to really cap off the night.

Now, I'm in front of the keyboard partaking in an adult beverage and posting this report. Hope y'all enjoyed.

  6. Sweeeeeeeeeet! Nice job Daniel.

Thanks for the detail on your presentation for the goldie.

I was out on Hammy harbour Friday afternoon with my cousins and nephews. We watched the weather come in from the west and decided to pack it in. No sooner did we get the gear in the trunk and sit in the car when the wind slammed my car door closed behind me and the wind and rain started blasting away!

Obviously, the day to be out there was yesterday. lol

  7. I hate that restaurant...JK...LOL..We fished all of Saturday and slept in the parking lot for the Sunday event.. The music kept me up..., LOL..It was all good music so it wasn't that bad..

Dang, sorry to have missed you guys Daniel. I was there Saturday night and, with not even a line bump, I needed that music to KEEP me awake. lol

  8. Mike I did see one big sheepy. The white fins give them away. The water temperature on the bottom there is still a little too cold.

Gotcha. Good thing there are a lot of other swims to fish right now.

Gotta love the tunes at Pier 8 right now, though. Even the restaurant has a live band to keep ya entertained! lol

  9. ".....I blanked, not even a sniff..The weather was soo hot and humid that the carp were cruising just under the surface...3 Fish were actually caught, which was a real surprise...."

Good to hear. Not your results but that things ran well. Sounds like the wall's still kinda quiet.

Ya, I saw those big boyz cruising under the surface on Saturday as well. I couln't tell if they were carp or sheephead, though, as they were just out of the range of clarity.

  10. I keep waiting to here news about last Sunday's Pier 8 tourney, but nothing so far so I thought I'd ask.

On a side note, I was there last Saturday and blanked with my cousin, fishing from 4pm til about midnight. The music they were pumping from the roller rink was pretty cool, though.

  11. Too bad about the weather. I don't have nearly as much time to fish as I'd like, and when a fishing trip is cut short because of weather, well, that just sucks.

Congratz on the ones you got there Daniel. 12 hours is a loooong time starring at a float!

  12. That sounds like quite a rewarding session, Lorne, scouting out a new swim on the big water. Congratulations!

Imagine the fun you'll have next time when the weather cooperates!

  13. What is really interesting is that you have lots of carp and a great diversity of other species as well. Thanks for posting that Dave.

That's what I always think about when I think of a great fishery like Kawartha Lakes. Muskie, bass, walleye and carp. All co-existing. Those who want carp removed from systems would have you believe it's not possible.

  14. Wow, sounds like your swim is getting a facelift there Tangled. And it's being funded corporately.

Funny the negative comments left by posters at the end of the article. I guess you can find the negative in anything, but it sounds like a win for fish( and fisheman )to me.
