  1. Pat,

This is the water I believe will give up the new State Record smallie here in MA. Here's a giant I got, in the same part of the reservoir, which was high 6's, while laker fishing in 60' of water..:D

Beautiful bass! It makes me very homesick for New Hampshire/Massachusetts where I spent my first thirty yrs. Nothing like a big Smallie jumping clean out of the water like a bomb blast. Once you have that experience it changes you forever. It happened to me in '76 and I got addicted in the worst way. I still am addicted.. Quabbin is a nice reservoir but I never got to fish there. I fished Walden Pond in Concord .It used to have some huge bass and holdover trout. Tite lines and may the Red Sox beat the Yanks.

  2. To think I used to drive a car over the ice (in the coldest part of the winter) to my fishing holes, I shudder to think of what might have or could have happened :D . I guess I was young and crazy....

I have fell in once when I was a kid skating a pond, luckily, it was shallow and I had friends with me to pull me out. Very cold I assure you.

  3. A good person to read is Dave Whitlock. He has written in the past several articles such as the Golden Witch. Although he primarilly fishes for trout and bass, he has often extolled the qualities of Carp on the fly rod. Check him out. :D

Have you heard of the coffee bean fly? It is used often here in TX. :D

  4. We do have some Grass Carp, big ones, stocked in some of the small lakes around here. I don't believe I've ever seen one when it wasn't moving. I've made many casts to them bass fishing, but I've never even turned one's head a single time, or even slow down for that matter.

The one and only 'grasser' that I have caught was on a small piece of nite-crawler fished on an unweighted line. This leads me to think a fly such as the San Juan worm would interest them. Of course I caught mine when they were really shallow during the spring. You can see them jumping and they seem to cruise along the edges a lot. Limited observation by me which does not constitute sound fact. But they are fast once hooked!

  5. I caught my first Buf last Thanksgiving weekend at the Barge and boy are they infuriating! with bit, let go, bite ,let go.etc I could never really tell if they had commited to the bait or not :D . The one I caught (3 Lbs) just took off with bait and hooked himself. Niblets corn seemed to work. Also, I chummed with rabbit pellets every so often to keep them interested. I tried doughballs (bread/cottonseed) and got a lot of bites but no takers. I am glad to hear that they bite during the winter, so maybe I won't get cabin fever so bad. :D

  6. I know a few people from their group. I'm a bit far from them so I'm a part of the Dallas Fly Fishers:

Do you know of anyone who I can contact about selling some gear?

Are there any flyfishing flea markets where gear is sold, raffled, auctioned off? Any meetings?

  7. Sorry to interject, but any of you who are interested in Flyfishing I have some gear for sale-see the Trade/Buy/Sell section. My gear advertised might be kind of light for Carp but I have several 8wts and a six wt along with reels that I would be willing to sell if any of you are interested. P.M. me. :D

  8. I am catching a lot of deep lip hooked fish lately. It seems that the hook is embedded in between the upper palate and a thin membrane. Trying to extract the hook causes the fish to bleed-which is undesirable and unacceptable. I use forceps (trout style) and a hooking mat to ensure minimal damage to the fish. Should I just cut the leader and leave the hook in so that it will eventually rot away?? I don't wish to perform a radical tonsilectomy every time I land a fish-what can I do? :D

  9. Longfellow Bridge?? What about Western Ave Bridge? Its been awhile....sigh. I see the Pru in the background and I guess your fishing near the Esplinade with Storrow Drive nearby right?

What other species of fish are in the river now? Last I heard they were experimentally stocking Northern Pike down by Newton Lower Falls back in '81. Did that ever work out?? Sorry, I guess this is non Carp related.

Also whats happening with the Sox? They need Nomar and Trot and soon.

  10. That's a nice fish-by the way is that the Mystic Ave Bridge in the backgound? You're not fishing the Charles River?! When I was living there the river was so polluted that nothing existed. I used to row crew up and down the whole river so I ought to know. Thanks to the Charles River Cleanup people were actually swimming at Magazine Beach back in the eighties when I packed up and moved to Texas.
