  1. Phil, I think Barry had one of the Isreali looking mirrors as a repeat capture, can't remember if it was the one Nigel had or the one you had. It was from the Basin.

Here it is Pat - looks like the bottom one in Phil's pictures. I think it was in 2003 (?) and weighed 19 & change.

  2. I'd guess at about 10-11lbs - she looks a bit thinner than the pike I usually catch though.

The Mona scale will give you a (very) rough idea what a pike might weigh:

  3. Tonight i was nigjht fishng at my local golfcourse and caught 4 carp, most between 1-15lbs.. But at the end of the night i caught a monster, it was about average girth maybe a little on the skinny and 43" and was aleast 30lbs. The only camera i had was my camera phone which doesn't have a flash. I'm about to get my camera and fish there every night this week. Any guesses on how much she weighed?

    Congrats on your PB. :)

The only skinny carp of that kind of length that I've seen was a 33:14 at 42", so I'd guess your fish was about 35lb. Having said that, I caught the same fish a couple of years earlier at 38:10 (my biggest US carp), so your fish has the potential to go 40+, IMHO. You need to go back in May & catch her again! :D

  4. mate, that's phenomonal, it's only 4oz off the british record Wels, big congrats :)

The record fish committee de-listed catfish about 10 years ago, when the record stood at 62lbs. A 100lbs+ fish turned up in a little 1/2 acre pond in Essex (Oak Lodge), that had no history of producing big cats. A record claim was submitted, but as it was almost certainly an illegally imported fish they threw it out & de-listed the species to discourage the practice.

These days the CCG maintain a list of water records, which has about 25 waters listed as having 60 plusers. The biggest on the list is a 130lber from Witch Lake in Norfolk (that one may be a foreigner too). The water record at Crackers Meadow is 66lbs.

Edit: The old record fish is still swiming about in Withy Pool - it was in the comics a few weeks ago at 83lbs.

  5. Great fish, Paul.

Are these poly balls commercially available? I do a bit of live baiting from shore but have never 'popped up' a minnow before. Something I think would be very effective if done right.

They sell them in tackle shops over here, in a range of sizes, but your best bet is a modelling shop, they'll be less costly. You need to use a suitably size ball (or egg), not so big it keeps the bait up, but big enough to raise it off the bottom if it stops working. The maggot clips help too - they make a smaller hole than a thick wired hook & the bait lasts long. I typically use 6" baits with this set up. Here's a link to a UK manufacturer : Polystyrene spheres & eggs

  6. Paul,

Berkley (Pure Fishing) said they were going to participate in the sponsorship of a "catfish" thing in the UK this year, well, maybe it was to be in Europe(?). Anyway did that happen? A big catfish torunament.

Nice fish although it certainly doen't look like a catfish - ha ha!

    Phone

If it's the one I'm thinking of, it will be held on the river Ebro in Spain next year - World Catfish Classic

  7. Paul, just curious, do you use carp rods for those big catfish? If yes, what kind are they, that you can have the drag pretty tight on a +60 lb fish? Thanks.

I use 12' Greys Spod rods for bigger cats, or 12' 3lb Greys Prodigy Deadbait rods (Pike rods) for fish up to 30lb. The deadbait rods have a slower action than a carp rod - they'll bend almost all the way through. The Spods are not rated with a test curve, but I'd guess they are in the region of 4.5lbs. I'd like it if they had a slower action - I may strip them down and add a couple of extra rings... I set my clutch so tight that I can only just pull braid off by hand without injuring myself. :) The end rig is a sliding 2oz lead, 150lb swivel, 24" of 70lb kevlar braid & 3/0 hook, 2 pellets on a hait. For livebaits I use 36" of 40lb coated wire & a 4/0 circle, with a polyball attached with a 12-18" hair. The poly ball is sized so the livebait can swim to the bottom, but is constantly dragged up if it stops working. Sometimes I add a rattle or 2 to the leader. I add a second, very short, hair with a maggot clip tied to the end, for lip hooking the livebait...it hardly causes any damage, so they bait works harder. Cats have much tougher mouths than carp, so you can apply a lot more pressure to them without pulling hooks. Pat always says I play my carp hard....he's not seen me catting yet. :D

Edit: the coated wire is to prevent bite offs if pike take the bait. 44lb flourocarbon is a better choice for waters without pike.

  8. Thanks everyone.

Ak - Here's a picture taken from the other side of the lake, which I took while blanking on last September's fish-in. The swim I fished this time is near the right edge of the picture. It's a lovely peaceful place to fish, set next to the river Nene, away from any busy roads. The lake also contains a few grass carp, into the 20s, and a good head of carp, with a couple over 50!

BTW, the fish in my avatar was caught from the lake next door (Ringstead Carp Fishery), when a mate took me as a guest a few years ago.

  9. I'm a member of another single species club in the UK, the Catfish Conservation Group. In a lot of ways it's similar to CAG...we have fish-ins as well. I attended one of the fish-ins last weekend, on a 5 acre lake called Crackers Meadow, just outside the village of Ringstead in Northamptonshire. I was late arriving on Friday evening and was left to choose between the 2 remaining swims. I decided to fish the same swim I'd blanked in on the previous fish-in last June.

    post-7-1284573509.jpg

I fished with 1 rod on a livebait, popped up about 3 feet & 2 rods on halibut pellets, with a kilo of freebies spread round each. The middle rod on pellet about 30 yards out, in 12' and the other two at the bottom of the maginal slope, about 10 yards out. The conditions were perfect on Friday night - overcast with a warm southerly breeze, trying to rain, but not quite managing. The fish seemed quite active - I was getting a few little knocks & pulls on the pellet rods & heard a few carp crashing out in the lake, which sounded quite large.

Just before midnight the bobbin on my right hand rod dropped & a steady run developed. On setting the hook the fish held it's ground to start with. I felt a couple of heavy thumps on the rod, which is a good indication that I'd hooked a cat - as they whip their tails back round onto the mainline. After about 15 seconds the fish decided it'd had enough & ripped 30 yards of 50lb braiid from a very tight drag, had a quick breather & went on another 20 yard run. I was getting worried about it going through other lines by the time I'd stopped the 2nd run, so really lent into it. It went on a couple more shorter runs on the way back in, and crossed my middle rod, but fortunately I netted it at the 1st attempt, before it became a problem. It was a short, but brutal fight, my arms were aching by the end of it. :D I could see it was going to beat my PB, so before I lifted it from the water I went to get the guy in the next swim to help with weighing & photos. The scales gave us a weight of 61lb 12oz and after 3 quick photos I slipped it back.

    post-7-1284573530.jpg

That was the only run anyone had that night. The sun came out on saturday & the 2nd night was much cooler & quite bright. I wasn't surprised when none of us caught on the Saturday night.

(Stewart - I only used GIMP to crop & resize these photos. :) )

  10. I think one of my greatest catches was last year. About a week before, my son had his running backlead fall of whilst fighting a 20+ Carp.

I got a 'strange' bite, struck - and pulled in a black plastic bag ---- and, hooked right through the clip on loop was - Seamus' lost back lead.

The odds against seeing it again were - Hmmmmm - pretty slim!! :yourock:

    Cheers,

    Brid.

One of my mates was zander fishing on a 1600 acres reservoir over here last year, vertical jigging in 50' of water. Late in the day he managed to drop his rod over the side of the boat. The next day, on the second drift through the same area, he hooked his lost rod through the tip ring! What are the chances on doing that again?

  11. Congrats on a new PB Pat. Nice looking fish... Have you tried halibut pellets for them? If they're anything like Wels, they'd probably outfish boilies.

I had my last cat session of the year over the last couple of nights - 6 weeks later than I usually fish for them. I had 1 cat of 41lb at 4am this morning on double 22mm halibut pellets. The fight was much slower than usual, but still powerful, the runs were much shorter than in summer. The bait still looked good after unhooking the cat, so I stung it back out in the general area I'd been fishing & at 5:30am a 33lb mirror picked it up. Also had a 15lb common & 25lb mirror, both on double halibut pellets - the other rods on triple 18mm boilie & a pepperami/pellet cocktail remained runless.

  12. nice paul B) sorry i wasnt able to get out there yesterday. see how the river produces when it settles down !! B)B) ill def be there sunday mornin b4 work for a quick session B) what did it weigh ?

We missed you Mark. B) We had an awesome days fishing yesterday, I think about 35 fish between us, with 7 over 20lb. The weight of the biggie...it was 37:04 and 40" long (measured under the fish). I caught all my fish on maize hookbaits - I was using 2 real kernels & one fake. I dumped a load more corn in when I left...we'll be down there again later.

Scott - I seem to remember you having a couple of big fish from the same spot last year...there's a nice drop off from the main river into the washington channel in front of the swim, which is probably why it's such a productive swim (?).

  13. I saw this fish in a tank at a restraunt. What is it? Here is the video.

Looks closer to a Rudd than Roach, but the fins look a bit too big. The root of the pelvic fin is further forward than the root of the dorsal on a Rudd, and the mouth upturned. On the roach the pelvic & dorsal roots are level & the mouth is "straighter".

  14. Nice catch Jake, you did better than me this weekend too.

There was a humourous article in today's Times about the diet of Pike - click here I wouldn't take it too seriously...

I found a dead pike of about 10-12lbs last summer with about 1/3 of the back section of another pike in the 5-6lb region sticking out of it's mouth. I wish I'd taken a picture... The bigger fish had taken a while to choak on it's prey - the smaller fish was more decomposed. In the past, I've had several pike in the mid-upper double region with the tails of 2-4lb fish sticking out of their throats & they've still taken a reasonable sized deadbait (6-8oz). Like me, they have eyes bigger than their stomachs. :D
