I am going to try a 1/2 day session saturday morning at either Burke, Huntsman lake or potomac. Let you know how it goes.

Is Burke or Algonkian Regional Park any good in the winter?
-
how did your koi hunt go? ANy luck? Where is that spot: West Ridge off of Old Bridge road?

Occoquan reservoir is alot closer and a fabulous carp lake. I live on the north side of the reservoir, send me a PM sometime if you want to go.

Check out bigcarptackle.com they sell a $39 12' Leeda carp rod. They also have some low end brand name carp rods. Also, Jim at big carp tackle will import practically anything from the uk for you. They just include it with their regular shipments and so it doesn't cost extra. I just make a wish list from the online UK carp websites and have Jim import them for me. It takes some extra time but You can get some fabulous low end carp gear that is impossible to get here in the US.

Ali Hamidi's "Carp Fishing Masterclass" has loads of details step-by-step instructions on rigs and gear and tactics. Its more of a refrence manual rather than a cover-to-cover read but its great.

Is anyone doing a fish in here in NoVa or DC area? Are there enough of us around to get together?

The Harlem Meer lake is open to fishing and all you need is a NY license. Technically you are only suppose to use bait supplied by the on site bait shop but it doesn't seem to be enforced. The only bait supplied by the bait shop is sweet corn so carp are VERY wary of corn. I did a short session there once. There are several mid double Koi and a good head of big commons. I saw once huge common in the 30-40's biggest carp I have ever seen with my own eyes. However, meer lake is extremely weedy with most the lake solid weebs from bottom to surface with only small chunks and strips of clear water (perhaps it is clear in winter time). Last year I brought corn and bread and sat and watched koi feed around my bait 12 feet infront of me for over an hour. A zig rig or fishy flavored boilies would be my choice if I could do it over again (cat fish are not a problem there).
I heard that they drained Meer lake to kill off all the snakeheads and that they saved the koi when they did. But I don't know for sure and I don't know if the carp were saved if and when they refilled it.

If you park at the fish market it's not a bad walk to the basin and there is a place where you can buy piece of chocolate cake the size of your head for a few bucks. Otherwise I park on Ohio drive.

Is anyone doing a fishin at Haines Point DC or anywhere else in the Metro Area or Northern Virginia?

Occoquan Reservoire is a fabulous place if you can find access. Lake Barcroft in Arlington has ghost carp but is a private lake.

DC tidal basin is one of my favorite places to carp fish. If you ever want to go let me know.

I ended up going to fourmile run and was surprised to see quite a few fly fisherman targeting carp. We all got skunked though.
