  1. Sorry about your rod...

My experience with fly fishing for them is that wind makes it nearly impossible... and that was with winds not close to 20 mph!!

And I found that white dubbing on the hook to build up a body -- like your cotton fly -- works fine without any scent or additive, so long s you can get it just a few feet in front of the fish.

This makes me want to do some fly fishing for them again! Good luck with the new rod and fly fishing for them! And I bet you could do fine with a 5 wt. too, so long as your drag is good.

  2. I'm also going to try and make my own fake corn using fly tying stuff and deer hair. Deer hair is hollow and floats and has lots of nooks and crannies to hold scent too.

I've tied "corn flies" using yellow 2mm craft foam. I'd imagine these would hold a lot of scent. I can see how deer hair would be good too, though, although I can't spin deer hair on a small enough hook for carp.

  3. Usually I just wipe mine down with a wet paper towel, and then dry them. Occasionally, if a reel is really dirty, sandy, muddy, etc., I will submerge it in warm water and reel it a few times and loosen and re-tighten the drag, while it's underwater. Then I thoroughly dry it. That's only if there's some sort of grit between parts of the reel.

  4. Many thanks to all who turned out on the Merrimack yesterday. It was great to have so many attending with participants from MA, RI and NH making the trip.

Congratulations to those who succeeded to land one or more fish (Donald, Lefty, Liam, Rob, Bob and Brendan). As for and those of us who didn't quite manage it (Will, Todd, Franky and his brother and, as usual, your humble SC)........our time will come!

Thanks also to Eric (ermghoti) and his girlfriend, who dropped-by for a chat and ended up staying for several hours, and to Franky's Dad and Brendan's Mom for driving them to-and-fro.

    Let's get together again soon.

  5. Big thanks to Iain for organizing and prebaiting! As Lefty said, it was a really great turnout! Although I lost my only run do to a rookie mistake (forgot to loosen the drag again after previously getting out a snag!), it was great to see so many others bringing fish to the bank!

Here's a few of my pics from the day. A lot of which are similar to previously posted ones, but here they are anyways...
