  1. Even if you get cheap $10 bite alarms they are better than nothing. Honestly besides build quality I don't notice that my cheap ones work any worse than my expensive ones.

    This...

Like a lot of people here I started with just bass gear (actually, I still use a lot of bass gear!), but the alarms are one thing I'm glad I got. A cheap, $10 set of alarms made a huge difference for me. Detecting bites earlier, not having to watch the rods the entire time, etc. Definitely would recommend getting some sort of alarms.

This is a good video describing a sliding bolt rig. It's the same thing you are using, but with the method feeder substituted for an inline lead. You could use a method feeder and it would be the same.

Now I have a question on this topic... if one used this rig in the video with lighter line as their leader/hook link, would this be safe for the carp because it would break before the mainline? If so, how much lighter should it be? Because to me it seems like that would prevent the chance of loosing a method feeder or sinker, but still not risk the carp's saftey...

*Not interested in getting involved in this argument going on here; just curious about this.*

  3. Ah, streamers... I never really had any luck throwing them for carp. Something that seems to work pretty well is taking a bigger fly (like one of your streamers) and trailing a smaller nymph or similar small fly behind it. The big one stirs them up as it goes by and then they usually hit the smaller one. It's all visual though, you have to be able to see the take to have the best shot at hooking the fish. And weeds are a killer.

  4. Yeah I know, it's pretty wide but I definitely don't want to push it by leaning or anything. I was just out today, and it's really tough! Even with an anchor the boat spun too much that my lines were everywhere! The problem was this pond is very weedy on the bottom so my rigs were dragging into the weeds whenever I moved. 2 rods is definitely too much for my little kayak, I may try again with just one tonight.

  5. Impressive! All my experience fly fishing for carp is out of state, but I started by chumming as well. By the end, I could hook up with most of the carp I came across without chumming. For me it was all in the presentation, being 2 or 3 feet in front of the carp. Still, they can be pretty picky at points.

What kind of flies were you using? All my experience was with average trout nymphs and a few carp specific flies. One I came up with worked very well - white dubbing, dumbell eyes, and pink chenille to imitate a small clam (although I suspect it was more of an attractor (. I have like 20 still on my tying desk ready for the fall.

  6. I did a report in the members section titled something different . Been yak fishing for 12 years. Carping is tough out of the yak. A single anchor isn't enough to keep you stationary. Recently I've gone to 2 broomsticks through my aft scuppers. Kinda like a power pole. Beaching the yak then getting in after a hookup works best if your looking for a ride. If your fishing on anchor or in the pads just fish one rod.

I remember that story you posted, and that is partly what made me think I may be a to pull it off. Thanks for all the tips everyone!

I am going to give it a shot tomorrow morning, in a spot I have baited for 2 days from the 'yak. This pond is tiny (2.5 acres), sheltered, and always calm, so if I fish in the morning hopefully I can stay relatively still. Whether or not I catch, it'll be a good experience, and I can always salvage the trip by catching a few bass if the carp aren't cooperating!

  7. I am trying to flyfish for carp but often use corn in difficult to cast spots. I always wear a hat and polarized glasses but if the fish are not there they are just not there.

Have you landed one on the fly yet? It's actually pretty tough, compared to dumb fish like trout :P

The spot I have in mind has bad access too. I think roll casting is key.

  8. Cool, thanks Jerome! I was thinking either anchoring or landing in a patch of lily pads would work for keeping it still-ish, but I think you're right, staying still could be a problem. I usually fish in the morning anyways though, when it is calm out, so that may help.

  9. Anyone flyfish for carp here?

A little, but most of my experience doing it is out of state. I have a few spots in mind, but they are all full of weeds now so I'm waiting 'til the fall when the carp don't have a dependable food source. Then my flies will be more appealing; they just ignore them now because they have enough food.

    You fly fish for carp?

  10. I have been thinking about getting a kayak for a while, and yesterday I picked one up. Not any fancy kayak, just a cheap, basic one. But I figured it would be good for trout, bass, and all the other fish I fish for.

But eventually I want to be towed around by a carp! Who here kayak fishes for carp? Anyone have any tips? I have a few places in mind where I should be able to sight fish/fly fish for some, but I'm also thinking of trying some Euro-style tactics from it. Any advice? Thanks!

  11. Nice Flax fish! Any activity at all at Quann? I can't catch a carp out of there for the life of me! In 5 trips there the most I've seen was 1 jump with Jerome :)

Too bad about the Mac as well...

  12. Curious to see who does this and who doesn't. If you do, what do you write down? Do you think it helps you catch more carp?

I fish for a lot of other species besides carp, so looking at my past fishing reports definitely helps. If I want to see when the bass were spawning last year in Lake XYZ, what bugs the trout are eating in April, etc. I always start strong and record the details of every trip, but within a few months I get lazy, and slack off. I've already stopped writing down details of my recent trips (way sooner than usual). So I'm curious to hear what systems you guys use.

  13. Newb question here... Can prebaiting with too much maize (or whatever else) make it hard for the carp to single out your bait? I suppose using sweetcorn with a pop up piece of corn would make it stand out more? Still, just curious, it a 5 gallon bucket of maize in one spot (for 3 days) going to overdo it?
