  1. Drop it in front of them and let it sit (or drift). My only experience for them is in canals, though. These are a lot smaller with a higher fish-per-square foot ratio than probably anywhere else. I would spot one and drift it over and over it. They are soooo spooky, but after a lot of drifts, they ate!

I think the grasshopper or beetle (another supposedly great fly for them) may lose some effectiveness if you couldn't see the fish. You may be better off with egg flies if they are too far.

Check out this video by the way... Maybe a dog food style fly would produce for you?

  2. he may have done stuff I don't know. But when I go back to when he was active it looks like this was the place to be. Mass CAG was rocking and Scott was the reason. Looks to me like Scott was a big part of a lot of people's carp angling success. People that important don't get banned for no good reason. Must have been an awful time here when that was happening!! Terrible loss!

Lefty, I noticed the exact same thing! The Mass section was really one of the most active spots on the whole forum, with people posting every day... and like you said, Scott was a big part why. There were like a dozen threads started a week, often more, detailing reports, hot baits, where to be, etc. I definitely learned a lot about local venues and carping in general from going through Scott's old posts. In the meantime, we need to get the Mass CAG back to what it once was!

  3. Nice one! You're definitely right about them spooking easier than commons. I caught a few on grasshopper flies (lime green, size 14 and 16), when they were near the top. Supposedly lime green is a good color for them all around, although egg flies are a good bet for all carp!

  4. We actually have multiple teenagers on this forum (and not only in Michigan!). Their opinion would be very valuable to hear.

Alrighty Jerome, being a youth angler (16), I'll give my 2¢...

I think that a youth membership could have some benefits, but honestly, I'm contempt with using the regular membership. Full access to the forums and being able to PM has been very useful in finding out information and communicating, and I understand the potential concerns, but I think it would be a major limitation if juniors were not able to do this. I definitely would not be a member anymore if I had no access for forum participation and PMing. Also, price isn't really a huge issue... $30 is a small price to pay for all sorts of good local and general advice, as well as access to fish-ins and other event.

But if the goal is to get more youths involved, I think that a discount or something (free sample of gear, etc.) may add a little incentive to join. I joined during the $10 sale last June, and I'm really not sure if I would have joined if it wasn't that special deal. Now that I have experienced almost a year on the forum, I know what it is like and definitely don't have a problem coughing up $30 or whatever it is for a renewal. But if youths were offered a discounted price for their first year, a few more (or their parents) may test it out and after going to a few fish-ins and getting some good advice, I'm sure they'd stay a member.

  5. Hey nmt2f...have you tried freelining? The grassers here in the Northeast are just starting to wake-up (low/mid-40 water temps)...so you have to be quick on the strikes.

Picked-up a few recently stalking / free-lining bread...6# mono, fluoro-leader & a size-1 gammy (similar to Santosh's suggestion a few posts back). Some days they go for the surface crust...others it's the bottom baits.

Bread seems to outproduce all other baits when it comes to grassers. Trying what classiccat said might help you catch some.

  6. Im assuming this the proper post for " Stupid Questions" also ?? Im a first timer to this contest...... Here goes.... Is it only Big Four that gets recognized? Im mean are there prizes for biggest single fish? Biggest Mirror? Most fish registered? I do not see much in the way of info regarding winning. Am I missing something?

    I'm wondering the same thing.

  7. I'm planning on doing this, but could someone explain the basics to me of how these Big Four competitions work? I've never entered one before.

I understand that at the end of the two months, you count the weight of your four biggest carp. But a couple questions...

Do common carp, mirror carp, grass carp, and koi all count?

Scales... my scale is certified by my town's department of weights and measures. Would I need to get it certified or checked in some other way?

And if I understand correctly, carp can be caught from anywhere, right?

    Thanks!

  9. Living in Massachusetts, almost all ponds and lakes freeze over. I ice fish for bass, pike, and sunfish and perch during the winter, but this year I am looking to get into some carp. I have some questions for anybody who has tried this - Is prebaiting a good idea? How do I keep my rods from getting pulled through the hole? What sort of rigs work? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
