  1. stopped yesterday to check a spot I've been baiting for Saturday . Had no intention of fishing but I could see bubbles coming up . I always have some gear in the truck so I popped a can of corn and set a rod. Didn't take 5 min. And my line was running off. The fish went straight for the weeds but I managed to free it and get it in the net. The bank is brutal hear so I stripped down s much as I could in case I fell in. I scrambled up the bank and got a sweet lady to take a pic. Nice fish at 22-12. Things are. Looking good for Saturday!!

  2. The new moon has always been good to me especially with stripers. I always made it a point to fish the new moon.Where the full moon I usually stay homr but heavy baiting seems to over rule everything

  3. Hi Lefty

Congratulations on your successes so far this Spring. I think I know the lake where you are fishing and it is relatively small (under 20 acres) so you should not be too far away from any bigger fish if they are still present. However, I would definitely consider fishing different areas of the lake rather than concentrating on one spot. There may be natural food sources in the lake around which the fish congregate and these can vary seasonally, so that an area that appears red-hot in April can be a dodo in June or vice-versa. The older and (probably) bigger fish will be entirely aware of such transitions, but as an angler it can take months or years to get a feel for all this. You could also try sneaking in with your kayak in the wee hours and taking a tour with your fish-finder (like you have done on other waters) to try and identify potential fish holding areas like drop-offs, submerged weedbeds and so on.

From a more philosophical point of view I guess you have to decide what sort of fishing suits you best? If you like a lot of screaming alarms and multiple fish days then you are undoubtedly going to have to wade though a bunch of smaller fish before latching into any monsters simply because very few fish make it to monster size. On the other hand, if what you want most is to catch a 30-pounder, then you would be more likely to succeed quickly by fishing waters that contain multiple fish of that size - usually big lakes and the tidal rivers. The downside of the big waters is that they are not really amenable to the short session style of fishing that you currently enjoy unless you live very close to them. For example, you would have a very good chance of catching a 30+ by fishing the St Lawrence River for several days but it is 6-7 hours drive away. Similarly, for the tidal reaches of the CT river which is a lot closer but doesn't match the St Lawrence in terms of sheer numbers of big fish. If long distance travel really isn't an option for you I would try and find a remote spot on the tidal Merrimack, bait it heavily and see what turns up.

As for rainbow chasing, I've been doing it for four decades already and my enthusiasm remains high. You have to be an eternal optimist because even a "successful" carp angler spends about 99% of their time not catching.

Good Luck and I hope to see you on the bank again before long.

    Iain

thanks Iain. The thought of scrambling the yak has crossed my mind. Today I fish my spot for 6 fish all 16 to 18 lbs. a friend has 2 of the same size. I'm finishing up this pond tomorrow and then heading to the Mac for the rest of the month. I've had an incredible spring fishing Carp. I had no idea how special these fish are! I've caught just about everything that swims and this fish is right at the top.
  4. Can maize catch big fish? Absolutely. I'd say it's more of an any carp bait instead of a big fish bait. If you've baited and fished the same spot for 5 weeks you may have some fish recognizing the maize as dangerous if your results are slowing down. In north america, I think if you chum big bait over time that only bigger fish can eat consistently, you will target larger species. Based on naturals we have in north american water we have a lot of big mouthfuls. Big mouths in relation to body size and fish that haven't been pressured. Tons of crayfish and mussels depending on where you live. These fish can take big baits. Try to hair rig a chunk of corn on the cob with a bigger hook on one rod and see if the average is better if you wanna stick with maize. Is this a big lake? Fish might be residents of an area of the lake while it meets their needs. As the year progresses the natural food source/ temps/ spawn/ oxygen levels changes and the location with it. The big ones get big by having all their needs met without having to go too far. So yes, maize can catch big fish and everything else, too. I think location is more important. If results are getting worse, move!

. my results have been consistent . The fish size is also. I've been told it's a tough place to catch so I'm thrilled about my success. I've also heard and read from good sources the lake holds fish over 30 lbs. but I've yet to see or catch anything bigger than mid to low twentys! Being a new carp fisher I'm wondering if those fish travel the whole lake or confine themselves to a specific safe area. I would think that steady feed with little pressure these fish would follow the food. I m at the lake daily have only seen 1 serious carp angler on it. Besides myself and my fishing partner. We only fish it weekend early so it might get some pressure later in the day. Guess I'm gonna have to try something different swim wise! Thanks for the reply and Congradulations on your Big 4 success!! This lake is 18 acres.
  5. So I've been baiting and fishing a spot for going on 5 weeks. I started this because I saw posts of big fish being caught here in the past. I've also got confirmation from members of big fish sightings. As of late I've caught a lot of very nice carp. The biggest being 23-12. So my question is this. Do carp usually stay in one area of a lake or do they travel all over the lake. I've been in 2 different spots but have still not seen these big (30+) fish. Will a maize ased chum draw big fish into a area? Is maize considered a big fish bait? Am I chsing rainbows?

  6. Was before my time but wasnt scott banned or something for lying about fishing weights most or all the time?

    Over Estimating carp?

I seen lots of his catches some are great some look like he put fish all the way up which were actually 5lb or more smaller.

never met him but sucks for anyone he affected while Doing that.

maybe hes great will like to meet any of them

he may have done stuff I don't know. But when I go back to when he was active it looks like this was the place to be. Mass CAG was rocking and Scott was the reason. Looks to me like Scott was a big part of a lot of people's carp angling success. People that important don't get banned for no good reason. Must have been an awful time here when that was happening!! Terrible loss!
  7. Hit the local spot last nite and managed 2 fish the littler one wighed 20lbs. even. The other was the same fish I caught last Wednesday evening. Unmistakable hole in its dorsal. Fought twice as hard this time. He was 24-5 last week. Didn't bother weighing this week. Took a quick mat shot and let her go.post-8866-0-68589600-1432131784_thumb.jp post-8866-0-09084600-1432131813_thumb.jp pretty fun seeing her again
