  1. Well since zebra mussels are the more destructive invasive species don't you think DNR'S should use common and mirror carp to help eradicate them?

I think if the public were made aware that a lot of them would release bigger carp back into the water and not kill them.

Perhaps even some bowhunters would endeavor not to shoot really big carp.

  2. A guy on a Minnesota fishing forum posted this:

"While I'm here, I just saw something very interesting today- I tossed a 35-inch carp I spearfished last summer in Tonka into a field and no critters ate him, just the maggots- so I was looking at the bones today, and inside the rib cage was nice pile of crushed zebra mussel shells!

whether he was eating that many in a day and expelling the shells on a regular basis, or if they were simply stuck in his gut from occasionally eating them I don't know

I'll be checking stomach contents this spring to see if that's a regular deal for big carp"

So if big carp can eat zebra mussels aren't zebra mussels worse invasive species? So shouldn't states promote saving big carp to use against zebra mussels?

  3. Congrats! When I fished yesterday I started at 1p didn't get a fish till about 4 after 10 bread bait bombs and a few grits packs. I think like you I wasn't in the optimum spot for the conditions. But managed to pull a really hungry guy in. Looking forward to warmer temps.

  4. It was warm today but about a constant 40 mph wind blowing. The ice literally melted yesterday. Since the public landing is a long ways away from the deep part of the lake I'm pretty jazzed I managed to catch one!

Grits pack in mesh, one fake corda popup corn and one real corn on a hair.

Couldn't do much for pics alone and with the wind. He was a 9 pounder. Boy you tell the waters cold he didn't put up much of a fight.

  5. In the next NACA? But I need to go fishing now! ;)

The NACA was really impressive very professional great mag!

So I know have quite a few ready made boilies. But I am going to be fishing lakes that have NEVER seen boilies. Would it work and be more cost effective to make my own for pre baiting then use my expensive pre made boilies for hookbaits?

  6. I was watching a show called monster fish I think it was. The host was in Thailand or similar locale to catch giant carp. While there he went to a fish auction. It was for these Fancy koi. People buy sell show and breed them like people with show dogs. If I remember one sold for like 8k while he was there then this one guy offered to take the host to his house to see his koi. The guy had a whole wing of his house full of just his trophies medals and ribbons. I think his best koi which he took out of the pond to show the host was valued at something crazy like $200,000.

  7. Honestly if you are a catch and release fisherman and fish for sport once you catch a carp its over.

Small mouth bass are still for me pound for pound the hardest fighting fish. But only because of their acrobatics.

Carp are a very close second. They are like Brahma bulls! Never had fish make runs peeling off line like that. And they are smart too. Heading for any obstruction, weeds, anchor lines anything to break you off. And the get HUGE!

Trust me you guys posting pics like that on BPS webpage will definitely get some bass guys to give carp a try just because of they size of them.

I suggest including a pic and description of the rig. What has always turned me off about bait fishing in general back when i wqs strictly a bass fisherman was it was just like stick a worm or minnow on a hook with a bobber cast it out and wait. But all the specialized gear and terminal tackle and rig methods. The mechanical ness of carp fishing (yes which arguably we may not need all the time) made it very much like bass fishing for me. Gearwise.

Let's be honest a lot of fisherman and hunters are gear hoarders. Hell I get a new tackle box every year practically just cuz its fun to move everything into a new tackle system and organize it. So carp fishing gives you the option to buy all sorts of gear. Use different rigs and methods of fishing. Make your own baits if you want.

I think if fisherman with no first hand knowledge of carp fishing see that it is more than just using a bobber. That will be an attraction as well. I know it was a bonus one for me.

  8. When back in august after just arriving in Minnesota a month earlier while checking out a lake I saw a giant half decomposed carp (30lbs at least) in the tall grass by the boat landing. My mind immediately remembered an episode of in fisherman I saw on TV as a younger man back in Maine. In it Stange was catching giant carp in Minnesota. I immediately got home jumped on the internet and learned some rudimentary ways to catch them. Then asked some locals where there were lakes with carp. Was carp fishing the next day.

Honestly I was so stoked to move to Minnesota (lived in new England for 45 years) because of watching and reading In Fisherman. I tell people it was because of the economy and the job market here but honestly it was because of the fishing ;)

  9. Whenever I can I bring people fishing with me. Once they hook a carp and see how they fight they are sold.

My 18 yr old son in law to be would only leave his computer and online gaming this summer to go carp fishing with me.

Since I went ice fishing for bluegills (boring) with them I got two other carp haters to promise to go carping with me. They thought reeling in sub 1 lb bluegills was fun. Can't wait to see their faces when they hook a 10+ lber.
