  1. Here in MN carp are hated. In the winter commercial fishermen are paid to try to get as many out as possible. They use nets and remote control submarines and in one local lake took out more than 100,000 lbs of carp. I'm gonna call the guy to find out what lakes he hit the past few years so that I don't bother carp fishing there. In the article I read he said even hauling so many fish out it only takes the lake 4 or 5 years to replenish the carp population and they can go do it again.

I've seen bow fishermen come to the boat landing with their boat filled to the gills with 100 dead carp or more. They take them home and throw them in the garden for fertilizer.

If I catch a carp (I like boat ramps at lakes that aren't busy to shore fish from) and people are around they have given me crap for releasing the carp. Most people here believe its ILLEGAL to put carp back in the lake. An old law that hasn't been in effect for years.

Now I freely admit I don't use a net. Nets hurt other fish and delay the release. Maybe carp are different? I don't use an unhooking mat or put them in one of those carp beds they use when showing them off in the videos or pics.

I drag them onto the grassy or muddy shore its (no rocky shores hereabouts) only as far as I need to reach them and don't take them out of the water to unhook them.

If I start getting into BIG carp I will get a sling for weighing them.

Now while this may not be the level of care some show its the same if not more that I show other fish.

If I cared anymore I wouldn't stick hooks in their mouths and reel them in

  2. So pre baited with frozen corn Sunday. Monday it was cold and I also got an email about taking a test for a job Tues in the same town as my proposed fishing spot. Figured I would wait til Tues and go fishing after my test. Well today its chilly with a wicked wind. Figured I would scope out where I pre baited. As advised I put a pile of corn where I could see it.

Well I was disappointed that the corn looks untouched

But I was excited that a couple different sections of the river upstream are thawed.

So I'm just going to wait til another warm day. Then I can pre bait the upstream areas. Drive down fish the pools by the dam and then hit the upstream areas on the way home.

Since fishing may be slow I'm gonna at least go on a nice day so I can enjoy the sun.

Gonna get some panko pack stuff today so I'll be ready

  3. Greetings! I just moved here from Maine in July. Maine where I was a "weirdo" for bass fishing. Now I'm in Minnesota and treated like I'm clinically insane for liking Carp!

There are some weird rules in this state. FIRST it seems the State nor many of it's licensed fisherman care about Carp. There is no "season" no limits, nothing. The State in fact pays millions it seems to try to eradicate them. YET I can only fish with ONE rod? WTF?!?!?!?

I am a fisherman, I have a conservation license so for 1/2 the price I get a license that allows me to keep only half the fish. Well I never keep ANY fish I release everything. But I can only have one rod in the water at a time? BS!!!!

It is funny though I called the 2 local conservation officers to ask about Carp fishing since I couldn't find anything about a season except for spearing and bowhunting. I wanted to know cuz a stretch of river nearby was ice free so I figured I would go fishing if I could. In Maine open water fishing doesn't start til April 1st.

One officer never even returned my call. The 2nd after I explained what I wanted to do said something to the effect of "you wanna what? go carp fishing? with a rod and reel? Well why would you want to do that????" thought I was trying to use a loophole to fish for "gamefish" I assured him that I have never even caught a bluegill by accident when Carp fishing and that really pretty much only Carp are interested in Carp baits he relented and said there was no law against me doing it just to be sure of what I was catching and keeping. I told him I catch and release the Carp and then he really thought I was "strange" lol

So I am new to the state. I like beer. I like BBQ. I like fishing, Bass (smallmouth especially), I wanna Pike fish at some point, and I am hooked on Carp fishing. Left all my friends and fishing buddies back in Maine (as you well know they are not always one in the same) I do love it here but miss fishing with a buddy so if anyone within a reasonable distance away wants a fishing buddy I am your Huckleberry. I also have pretty much unrestricted access to a 20' smokercraft with a 40hp outboard and a remote controlled trolling motor and fishfinders up the wazoo. It's my future father in laws but age and bad knees keeps him from using it much and he's happy to let me use it whenever I want. Though I got to admit a lot of the fun in Carping is being able to bank fish. BUT a couple times I couldn't cast to where the carp was and I went after them with the boat. That was before I knew the laws and didn't think any laws pertained to carp. My GF's son and I were in the boat with 7 rods in the water LOL!

Anyways nice to find some other crazy bastards ;)

  4. So not true I have $20 wal mart rods that are 20 years old and have been beaten to death. I give them to noobies who go fishing with me so they don't break my good stuff. Go deep sea fishing on a big charter boat that takes gobs of people out those are cheap ass rods AND reels.

Your blender anology is right about a lot of stuff just not fishing rods. Your $300 st Croix rod will break wayyyyy before say a $30 Ugly Stik.

With rods more money gets you lighter more sensitive blank materials, premium finishes, nicer guides, premium handles and reel seats.

In the rod world more expensive doesn't always mean stronger and more durable.

True fishing with an Ugly Stick may feel like you're using a baseball bat compared to your St. Croix rod ;)

  5. If you get a big order a couple of the big box carp suppliers in the UK like Dragon Carp are good for cheaper gear. People slam them for having crap but I got a Brolly, a pod, rods and bite alarms from them and I am quite happy. Sometimes it can be worth the added shipping cost. I always check American Carp suppliers first and buy from them if it makes sense economically. I can't pay way more for stuff just because it comes from an American supplier. I wish I could but I can't.

I have bought a ton of terminal tackle off of ebay. Most times its a long slow boat from China so don't be in a rush to get it. But you can a lot of money getting the same stuff with brand names like Nash, Fox, Gardner ect. from and I have gotten name brand stuff and the ebay version of the same stuff and there wasn't any difference to my eyes. But the ebay stuff was in some cases 1/2 the cost or better.

  6. I have big fat dumb sausage fingers. So I was watching a carp video and a guy was using this cool Jag vise to hold his hooks while sharpening them. I've always been a big believer in sharpening all hooks even when they are brand new. Even the sharpest out of the box can benefit from a caps laps on the hook file.

So he had this cool Jag vise so I was like "me wants!" Ummm until I saw the price! So I got looking for a cheap alternative and I found this:

    http://www.ebay.com/itm/231372145473?_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2649&var=530634089027&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT

It's a jewelers vice it was $11 but you could get a cheaper one in black. Works perfect for holding hooks.
