  1. I've been using circle hooks for carp fishing for probably at least ten years now.  I've used them with sweet corn right on the hook and with hair rigs threaded with sweet corn, field corn, artificial corn, and boilies.  I've almost always used Gamakatsu Octopus circle hooks, e.g.,

I get occasional hook pulls, but not very often.  If I'm getting hook pulls, it's usually because I'm using a smaller size than I should for the fish I am catching.  I like the above in size 2 for larger carp, and size 4 for 12 pounds and under.  Every hook is set perfectly in the corner of the mouth, making hook removal in the net easy before I even bring the fish out of the water.  I've never had a hook set anywhere other than the corner of the mouth or the lower lip.

They are also good for when I get a run and it takes me a little while to get to the rods.  I don't have to "set" the hook with these hooks, they are already in place just by the bolt rig or the resistance of the reel drag.

Lake James (on the Linville River side of the lake) is GREAT bank fishing as well as the upper end of Rhodhiss lake, (around the Huffman Bridge Road public access area, provides excellent bank fishing as well). After finding a spot, I would pre-bait both areas a day in advance with some whole corn or scratch feed.

"Not Just Fishing" is a great place to buy carp gear locally...Info below...

Thank you for the suggestions!  I'll probably scout them out in the next couple of days and take some bait with me.

  3. Howdy, everyone!

I just moved to Boone, North Carolina a few weeks ago.  I used to live in Akron, Ohio, where I had a few good carp spots I had learned over the years.  I was starting to get some fish over twenty pounds earlier this summer before I had to move.  I've just started the Euro angling style a couple of months ago.

I haven't been able to find a whole lot of info about carp fishing in North Carolina, except for the carp pay lakes.  I'm looking for some wild waters to fish.  I'm wondering if anyone has any ideas on lakes or rivers to try in this area.

I've fished W. Kerr Scott reservoir a few times and only managed a single five pounder from it.  I also tried Julian Price Lake once with no results.

Let me know if you are aware of any decent waters in this area with some fish.  Not trying to take you spot, just looking for water with carp in it!  Or let me know if you want to meet some evening or weekend for some fishing!
