Ollie's Outlets is a fairly new chain, apparently out of Harrisburg, PA.  It's a bit similar to Big Lots, but (IMO) with less junk and more useful stuff.  Like all those types of stores, the merchandise varies from store to store and from one week to the next.  But they usually have a decent supply of vanilla, anise, and spices.  It's usually a good place to stock up on (unhealthy) snacks for your bank side sessions, as well.   If you're in the area, it might be worth your time to stop by and look around.

They even have a small section of fishing tackle items.  I haven't bought much of it, but I did find some Berkley Gulp! floating corn for 50 cents.

Check this for store locations near you...  http://www.ollies.us/locations/

There are two of them within a 20 minute drive from my house.   One of those recently added some "Catfish Combos" that sell for $29.95.  I've been thinking about buying one to use as a spod rod -- 10 feet long, 2 pieces, with an action almost like a pool cue (MUCH stiffer than my heaviest 12' carp rod -- it's probably at least a 4 TC)

I don't know when I will be near one next, but will definitely check it out.  I love finding new stores like that.  Floating corn is something I am about to buy from BCT, so that would be nice. Just noticed that Berkeley has a carp line, which is interesting.

The catfish combo sounds good for what you want to use it for.  Even if the reel is pure crap it's not fighting a 30 lb fish, just a 1/4-1/2 lb. spod, and then whatever it hits on the way back in.  And it sure beats $300+ for a dedicated spod rod.

I picked up a Penn Prevail with a 4-10 oz. lure weight for spodding and cats, and was told that 12 oz. weights wouldn't be an issue. Does anyone make an XXL spomb? :)

I also recently found a 5 lb bag of "beet powder" (dried & powdered beets, mixed with powdered grain) in the Walmart sporting goods section for under $10.  It's sold as a deer attractant, but can be added to pack bait to attract carp.  I haven't tried it yet, but since beets are a fairly good source of betaine, it should be ok.

Mine has a powder and a liquid corn attractant I have been considering, but want to start simple before buying alot.  Can't catch a carp with oats and corn, or oats, corn and grenadine, don't know if a 2 page ingredient list will do much.

If you watch Ollie's, you can find large bottles of flavors as caramel and raspberry.  These are supposed to flavor tea, coffee, etc. but I use them to flavor canned sweet corn and packbait such as boiled cracked corn.  I do put it in my tea occasionally.  I have found, at least here, that the light corn syrup is seasonal for the holidays.  So........I have about 10 bottles on the shelf.

Never heard of the place, but there is a few in Louisville, and one in Nicholasville and Richmond I will try to check out.

  4. I know that most of us can find sweet corn, creamed corn, hominy, and rolled oats, basic seasonings, etc., but some things, like sweet feed, beluchan, and other ingredients, might be harder for a beginner to locate.

Please post what ingredients you use, and where you find them at.  As much information as possible, or links would be great, so others can search for brands and products at their local stores.

For example, I have heard a lot about sweet feed, but can only find 50 lb. bags, like below, which aren't conducive to apartment living.

I've been using circle hooks for carp fishing for probably at least ten years now.  I've used them with sweet corn right on the hook and with hair rigs threaded with sweet corn, field corn, artificial corn, and boilies.  I've almost always used Gamakatsu Octopus circle hooks, e.g.,

    https://www.amazon.com/Gamakatsu-Circle-Offset-Octopus-Hook-Pack/dp/B005K0LTAK/

I get occasional hook pulls, but not very often.  If I'm getting hook pulls, it's usually because I'm using a smaller size than I should for the fish I am catching.  I like the above in size 2 for larger carp, and size 4 for 12 pounds and under.  Every hook is set perfectly in the corner of the mouth, making hook removal in the net easy before I even bring the fish out of the water.  I've never had a hook set anywhere other than the corner of the mouth or the lower lip.

They are also good for when I get a run and it takes me a little while to get to the rods.  I don't have to "set" the hook with these hooks, they are already in place just by the bolt rig or the resistance of the reel drag.

Would you say your catch rate went up with the circle hooks?  I am still trying to decide between carp curve shank, the chod/octopus i have now, and getting small circle hooks.

I'm sure you could land a 20 lb common in the net. I have gotten mid'teens in there ok. Not sure i would want to try and get a 30 lb grasser in it though ! A lot of the lakes i fish the carp average 11 to 12 lbs and works fine for those. The handle and head are sturdy. It is a 26in net, so you can get a good sized carp in there. Again, plan for what you may catch, if in your case thats a 36in carp, then i would go for a net big enough to handle it with ease.

If only we had a Carp Talk magazine or a list of all carps in each body of water.  Wouldn't it be nice?

When you go surface fishing, do you go bigger or smaller on the hook?

To round out my NGT net collection, I have a short 26” collapsible net,  this works pretty well and is good for a portable solution, though the head is a little small.

I had looked at the 26", but didn't know how big a fish it would take.  How big would you feel comfortable landing in it? It looks like a simple net for the bass, panfish, and small < 10 lb. channels in the places I fish.

    Hi Jason,

I would highly recommend ensuring you upgrade to a metal spreader block.

Thus you will also need the,

    http://www.bigcarptackle.com/ngt-metal-spreader-block-for-42-50-nets

The original net I was looking at was
    http://www.bigcarptackle.com/carp-care/nets/nets/ngt-42-carp-net-and-telescopic-handle

Which has the "upgraded design compared to the original NGT spreader block"  That and the net bag and be done.

When looking at piecing the net together, none of the NGT handles have very good reviews posted.  It looks like I will have to go $85-100 to get above the NGT level nets.  Hard to stomach with US style normal nets being less than half that.

In answer to your question from the CarpCast Fan page,

I am currently using Eagle Claw's Trokar Magnum carp hooks, curved shank, #4 & 6, and previously used the Ambush range of hooks from BCT, wide gape and curved shank teflon in sizes #4, 6 and 8. I have also used Korda Kaptor wide gape and curved shank hooks with great success.

Korda wide gape in the BCT basket right now.  Will check out the curved shank Trokars.  Why did you step away from the Korda Kaptors and the wide gape style?

Yes, I still use my panko/oats packbaits and do modify it to suit my fishing needs, either with additional flavorings and/or particles depending on what type of hook bait I am using. The grass carp I have caught, have all been on high attract, fruit flavored baits, corn, maize, large peruvian maize and actual vegetables, zucchini having worked particularly well lately.

The Totally Awesome Fishing Show video on surface fishing has led me towards dog biscuits to begin with.  But I don't want to try a grass carp until I have a good net to land it with, as the locals are 3-4 foot long. Have you tried cat or dog food in pellets or wetted and smashed as groundbait?  $2 for 4 lbs. at Walmart doesn't seem too bad if it might work. Been thinking of pineapple juice soak on bread or bagel pieces.  Maybe soak the dog "biscuits" in it instead?

As for hook baits, I currently use maize (flavored), corn (flavored), a LOT of enterprise corn pop-up's (various flavors), veggies, cc moore's hi-viz tiger nuts (creamed, pineapple and tuitti fruitti), live system and hell raiser range of pop-up's.

    Tight-Lines,

    John / CarpQuest

I was looking at unflavored maize or sweet corn to start with.  Imitation on top, real below, snowman style.  I want to stay away from boilies and stick to grocery store stuff until I decide how far down the rabbit hole I wish to go.  Currently in the car I have a small bag of instant oats and a few "travel packs" of sweet corn for carp, and two chopped up Slim Jims for bluegill and catfish.

That net comes with a plastic spreader block. Not sure why the shorter rod has a higher shipping. We are tied to USPS for rates and sometimes there are hiccups in the systems talking. We also refund back any difference in the shipping if we are able to ship it for less than you paid.

    So piecing together

http://www.bigcarptackle.com/carp-care/nets/nets/ngt-carp-net-with-spreader-block  Green 42" with metal spreader block

    http://www.bigcarptackle.com/ngt-6ft-carp-net-handle

    http://www.bigcarptackle.com/ngt-stink-bag-42-net-and-handle-combo

    Instead of http://www.bigcarptackle.com/ngt-deluxe-42-carp

    correct?

  10. I was hoping for the $30 net to come in, and add the FO-SLIP-115CM for about $36 total.

Saw FNH-COMBO-NET42"-HANDLE-DLX which saves a dollar over piecing it together if the combo has the metal spreader block. Can you confirm?

That rod is what I was looking at, and was recommended by the guy on Carp Quest.  Didn't know if FR-C-CLASSIC-CARP-2.75  would be worth the extra $6.  And the FR-F-CARP-MAX-3PC had a higher shipping cost than the 2 pc. rods.

The Ashima hooks we are no longer carrying so what we have is what we have. The Gama hooks are there (unsure why you could not find them)

    http://www.bigcarptackle.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=gamakatsu+carp+hooks

If you have any questions feel free to email us.

I clicked on hooks, and it doesn't show up in the manufacturers list. Thanks for the link.

I emailed a last week through the Contact US page ago asking about when these would be back in stock

    http://www.bigcarptackle.com/carp-care/nets/nets/ngt-42-carp-net-and-telescopic-handle

    http://www.bigcarptackle.com/range-cubes

Also, any comments on your NGT $30-40 2.75 lb. carp rods would be helpful.

  12. I have a Penn Prevail (4-10 oz. lure weight) with Okuma ABF-65, so spod/long distance rod is taken care of, and another ABF-65 awaiting an actual carp rod.  Will buy a landing net, and have something that will work as an unhooking mat.  Also have a small spomb that works decently well with my bass rod.

I am currently shopping for these things

Gripper/Method Lead.  One for carp rod, one for Prevail
    Rig Ring
Carp Rod - looking at the sub-$50 offerings from NGT. The 3 piece would be nice, but the Penn Prevail is 2 pc. 12', so if I comes, then the 2 pc. 12 carp rod would be the same length.
    Hooks
    Artifical corn/maize, popup and sinking

What should I be putting in my cart?
