  1. Thursday afternoon MY good friend (KCCarper) and I went to MY favorite lake for a 3 - 4 hour session. I sat in MY favorite spot using MY favorite bait, using MY favorite rod and reel, in MY favorite weather conditions.

A side note - Dave caught a beauty of a buff, his first. Still, I blanked and I am STRESSED!

As America's formost authority on carp angling I am about 3500 pounds and 1095 fish behind my usual annual schedule. (Did you notice my average fish size? I don't mess around).

KCCarper and I are going for an all day session down to the headwaters of Lake of the Ozarks this Saturday (about 70 miles) if anyone wishes to join us (probably about 9 - 5). I'm really luckey, he's a fun guy, great fisherman and doesn't tell on me when I blank. My wife won't let me go down to this venue by myself any longer - steep banks and lots of big rocks.

Since I have been in sequestered all day in my personal and secret lab under very controlled conditions preforming scientific measurements I will probably 100% reduce my "catch" shortfall Saturday.

PS: Do you think my reputation depends entirely on Saturday? Pressure, pressure, pressure - - - it's lonely at the top.

First off ya might want to try and upgrade your tackle to zebco 404's and I know your knowledge of advanced baits is second to none but sometimes carp do prefer a different brand of can corn. OH! and did you check the water temp, it was above 50 or you are just wasting your time. Let me know when you are coming to NC this summer and I would be honered to spend a day with ya teaching ya the fine art of carp fishing, PAYLAKE STYLE

  2. An important facet would be whether the pull was steady, or a sudden sharp pull.  Do you recall?

The test was done both ways. One was with a machine that applied steady pressure until the line broke. The other was a jerk test to see how lines and knots would perform when setting the hook. The palomar and the trilene knot out performed everything else on the jerk test. The uni-knot lost a little on the jerk test but still performed well. I think the reason the palomar and the trilene did better was they have two loops of line going through the eye of the hook.

  3. chipmacdale,

Did you ever test out the Albright Knot by any chance?

The testing was done back in the early 80's, so a lot of the knots we tested and some info I have forgoten. I can't remember anything about the albright. I remember the info about the knots that I use and do remember that there were only 2 knots that were 100% line strentgh. Palomar and the Triline knot. The testing was done on a machine that recorded the pounds of pull at break and was done with all the major brand mono on the market at that time.

I use the uni-knot when connecting two lines together and I have never had it break.

  4. Many years ago when I fished a lot of bass tournaments I got the chance to be a line tester and at that time we tested every major brand of line and every knot that we knew was being used by fishermen. The lines have changed a lot since then but the knots are the same. The palomar knot was the strongest knot with any mono tested, it was 100% or more of line strenth. If you tie your line to something with a palomar knot and pull the line until it breaks the line will break every time not the knot. I used a slip knot most of the time when I bass fished because I could tie it in 2 seconds and the polamar took me 4. But in carp fishing the time is not that important. The slip not is a good not ( 98% line strengh ) and I still use it the most , mostly out of habit.
