Is there any real logic behind their claims that carp "take over" and that they've "changed the ecosystem, nearly wiping out native species"?
Maybe I've missed something, but most of what I've read has claimed to debunk most of those theories. I live very close to Douglas Lake, and it's packed with all kinds of "more desirable species". But all the rivers that feed Douglas Lake are full of carp and have been for at least 100 years. What haven't they destroyed that ecosystem?
Keep in mind these are genuine questions, I don't claim to be educated about the subject. Didn't I see a member on the forum who was a scientist in the field of fisheries? Actually, I bet this has been discussed at length somewhere on here. I've gotta do some searching and see what I can learn.

Sounds like a blast! My brother goes fishing with me a lot, I'll probably sign him up as a member before then so he can enter too. Plus, I'll have someone to help take the pictures.

Potentially! I just took up carp fishing about two months ago, so I've obviously never fished in winter, but I sure plan to! Hi guys, I've had a blast this morning! I thought this was kind of like a discovery month entry but not really, since it's my same spot that I've been fishing for about 6 weeks now. But, we've had a ton of rain over the last few days, and the river is getting really high. The place where I usually put my chair is under about 2 feet of water. Anyhow, a couple weeks ago I went early Saturday morning after it had rained on Friday & didn't catch a thing. It was just dead, no bites or anything. I didn't have very high hopes for this morning, but there was gonna be a break in the rain for a couple of hours so I thought I'd try my luck.
I caught 3 carp in an hour and half before the rain started! And I learned a few things too.
1. Flooded banks mean swarming carp!
I was getting bites pretty consistently by casting just a couple feet in front of where my chair usually sits. The first one I hooked today ended up being the biggest one, and he was putting up a heck of a fight! He kept running towards a big tree on my left that has two huge roots. Normally, when the water isn't up this high, that generally means a lost fish if you let them get over towards those roots. But for some reason the higher water level made it easier to let him make his runs without getting around stumps & roots. So I decided to move over to that part of the bank to bring him in instead of dragging him all the way over to my spot. Just as I was getting him in the net, the drag started screaming on my other rod! I got the big one in the net then went over to grab my other rod, then put the big one back in the water while standing on the handle of the net.
2. When it comes to snags, patience is a virtue
The fish on was much smaller, average size for my swim, but he had got under one of those roots. I could still feel him tugging but trying to pull him out wasn't doing much good & I knew I'd just break my line. With a little patience, he came out from under the root and I was able to get him to the bank...
3. If you're gonna have two lines in the water, have two nets handy!
...but as I was bent over trying to get a hold of him, the hook tore out and he took off. I was still able to get a picture of the big one tho! Considering I weigh 315lbs (I know I know, working on slimming down) how much do you think this guy weighs? I would guess at least 20lbs but I've never had a fish on a scale so I could be way off.
And one last thing I learned today, I either need to consistently have a buddy with me to take the pictures, or I need a tripod for my phone, cause trying to take a selfie while cradling a carp is neither easy or effective haha.
Oh, and we're supposed to keep getting rain today, so the river will probably get a little bit higher. If it holds off for a little while in the morning, you can bet I'll be back!

Sounds great Cannonball! Or maybe even Vonor near Sweetwater? It looks like there's a big wide spot in the Little Tennessee river there, look like carp area to you?

Yeah, maybe next year when I have a little more experience. GA is certainly closer than IL where I see there's a lot of stuff happening right now. I also worked a little bit with the Church of God near Tifton, GA a few years back. Beautiful place!

Hi guys!
To try to make a long story short, my dad grew up in a small house here in East Tennessee that was sandwiched between the Pigeon River and the railroad tracks downtown on about 150' of property. He grew up poor, and spent most of his time fishing. There were several houses on that stretch of river, and back in those days they would just throw their scraps in the river while inadvertently chumming some of the largest carp I've ever seen.
When I was a boy, he'd take me fishing with a dough ball made from "light" bread covering the whole hook & a split-shot sinker. A few minutes later, there would be a huge carp stripping the line off my rod.
I've since got a family of my own with a two year old little boy. I hadn't been fishing since I was maybe 10 years old, but I decided I wanted to be able to give my son the same exciting experience of catching big carp. When my grandparents passed away, my dad's family sold all their property down town, so I've found a new spot & I've been fishing there for a few weeks early on Saturday mornings. I've done pretty good with just sweet corn on a hook, with an egg sinker behind a swivel. I've been catching several common, buffalo, a few fish that I think are called "redhorse" and my brother caught one catfish so far. It's a fantastic way to spend the first few hours of a Saturday!
While doing some research on hair rigs and trying to decide what to order to try some different things, I came across the CAG forums. I'm really excited about becoming a part of the community here! Especially once I get my welcome pack
. Anyhow, I'm attaching a couple pictures of some of the best ones I've caught so far. If you have any beginners advice feel free. I know I need a better net that won't damage the carp, I hope I don't catch too much flack over that. It's definitely on the list of gear I'll be ordering soon!

I would be very interested! I'll probably bring my brother too. I've never been to any of the venues you listed but they're all within driving range for me. I'll definitely be checking this thread often!
