Joel, I wish you a speedy recovery. You have probably injured some ligaments and/or tendons. These are notorious for incomplete healing even after surgery. You may wish to investigate prolotherapy, a validated noninvasive medical technique for strengthening ligaments & tendons , especially after injury.

I was fishing today at a somewhat busy bankside location. A young lad came by who was casting various lures for bass with no success. We struck up a conversation. I told him I was fishing for carp. He was full of questions and I tried my best to get the current question properly answered before the next question materialized. During this process one of my bite alarms started singing that always welcome steady tune. I proceeded to haul in a nice common pushing 20 lb. The next thing ya know the lad wants to fish for carp too. So I got him all fixed up with a paylaker rig with a special packbait. He cast it out & we waited, continuing the conversation. He got the next run and landed a nice 12 lb common. He was really super stoked. He decided then & there that he wanted more of that kind of action. So I gave him a few tips, a few recipes & some terminal tackle. Then I had to leave; I gave the rest of my bait to the lad. I think I'll see Paul again on the bank someplace, fishing for carp.
