Twas a nice balmy day in SoCal yesterday so I took my 8 year old grandson out carpin for the first time. We had a ball. Landed two nice fish. I did most of the duties but I let him reel em in. When the bite was slow, he practiced casting and catapaulting.

[A Conversion Experience]

I was fishing today at a somewhat busy bankside location. A young lad came by who was casting various lures for bass with no success. We struck up a conversation. I told him I was fishing for carp. He was full of questions and I tried my best to get the current question properly answered before the next question materialized. During this process one of my bite alarms started singing that always welcome steady tune. I proceeded to haul in a nice common pushing 20 lb. The next thing ya know the lad wants to fish for carp too. So I got him all fixed up with a paylaker rig with a special packbait. He cast it out & we waited, continuing the conversation. He got the next run and landed a nice 12 lb common. He was really super stoked. He decided then & there that he wanted more of that kind of action. So I gave him a few tips, a few recipes & some terminal tackle. Then I had to leave; I gave the rest of my bait to the lad. I think I'll see Paul again on the bank someplace, fishing for carp.

Those sunfish & bluegills were about the same size as the lure!! You got some pretty macho panfish down there in Texas!!
