  1. Scott,

Thanks for sharing your ATC shots. Looks like you guys had a blast.

Congrats on the multiple PB's. I believe that split tail buff has been caught a couple of times previously (once by Louis?), I have seen pictures of it before, I'll have to peruse some older Town Lake threads. If so it is another example of catch & release at it's best.

    Congrats.

  2. Keith,

I agree with what Ken is saying. We are seeing an evolution in a growing sport. The ACS has grown this side of it. Fishing is fishing for the most part, so many are saying why not do it and potentially win a little scratch as well. Even these bigger money events are social events and are fun to compete in. Anyone with a little competive blood will choose the money event over the social (this is of course if one can afford the entry fee!). Throw in the fact that many don't have limitless vacation, and that is why some of these choices are made.

Personally I had a good time at the one ATC I went to in '06 - socially. The fishing & peg draw we had was bad (couldn't fish day 2 because of kayer water polo...). Still & had a good time. Would I make the trip again? Not sure. Why? Not because I didn't draw a good peg, but because there are many other social events now that I'd rather fish. And yes - some have big cash prizes.

I also thought it would be a good idea to somehow split the ATC between Lady Bird & Lake Austin, but perhaps it's logistically challenging. Does it need to be re-vamped? Not sure. Easter weekend had to be a killer here. And the way Easter moves around it may have been overlooked in the planning stage. I also believe all events wax & wane. Even if Tenessee was not happening I thing ATC attendance will still be down. Didn't this also happen with the CCC?

I also thing you will see even more overlap when it comes to event dates. As the sport grows more events will pop up. It is always a challenge for me to organize a Spring fish-in here in CT, with NY, DC, MA events all happening in a 3-4 week time frame before the spawn hits. We try not to step on each others events, but it's hard not to at times.

As far as making it more attractive that will be the challenge. Every year there are more venues being discovered with huge potential, so Town Lake might not be the number one big fish destination anymore. And if that is what people are going there for maybe that is part of the problem.

  3. "Albany Beef".

Too bad they're so depleted in the Hudson, now. The only river with a strong population of them on the East Coast is the Kennebec...

    Scott,

Actually there is a vigorous sturgeon restoration project going on in the Hudson. There have been a number of juvenile stockings in the past few years in the lower Hudson. In fact the last time I went out with Val last fall we observed many fish breaching in one shallow area (4-6 foot depth). These were most likely some of these stocked fish, most were less than 20 lbs in size. It was cool to see them.

I have yet to hook one, but I am pretty sure Gate had one on in the "O" River in O-berg a couple of Junior events ago...

  4. Years ago Titicus was good for carp. We used to fish by a small bridge that went over a small channel. We caught many fish the largest being about 20lbs. I had one on that I chased down the bank till I reached the end at which time the carp kept running until he wiped out the reel. Those are monster calicos. Don

    Don,

Those carp are still there. What made them hard to catch was all the margin growth that came up when the reservoir was lowered for dam repair in the late 90's. I grew up in North Salem and have probably fished more hours there than anywhere else in my life. The underwater margin growth is finally rotting out, and I plan to fish it for carp again this year. The bridge you speak of is the inflow from the Titicus River. As kids we fished off it at night by hanging a Coleman lantern from it, and fishing shiners for crappies & the ocassional big brown trout.

Titicus is my favorite water of all time for many species.

  5. Great fish Jake.

If you're onto the calicos through the ice you can really load up. I always called them calicos here in the NE. They are the one fish that I enjoy keeping for the table. Every April I fish for them at night with pin minnows under a lighted float in Titicus reservoir (NY). I have had 3 over 3lbs in the past couple of years.

    We call them "slabs".

    Good fishing.
