  1. I spent a good part of the day packing...  :D Then got ripped off by UPS for a 2-days delivery of my fishing rods...  :D

I should definitely have mentioned it earlier, but if you sent some stuff (e.g. bait, gear, whatever) by postal mail to the hotel, then I hope that you figured out that the proper address is: 1001 South I-35, Austin TX 78741.

(as opposed to 1001 Riverside Dr., Town Lake, Austin, Texas 78741 as documented on their flyer -and this is WRONG-)

If you used the wrong address, you still have a chance to find your stuff, but it has been delivered to a private property (relatively close to the hotel). I've been through this interesting experience last year...

YEP that is the correct address -- I called them to confirm.

As for UPS -- RIPOFF. SCAM ARTISTS -- you are better off buying new gear out there and then sell it or donate it....

  2. somewhere in the maze of posts, on the ATC :D  I requested that everyone bring a Cell Phone....Mark that's real nice of you to start that list....I will PM you my cell, and I suggest other P.M. Mark as well.....I also requested in that thread somewhere, that you bring a Keep net,,,Just in case, a digital camera ( If you have one) and your best fishing  :D  skills !

    Neil,

I must be the only person in Boston without a cell phone... I'll bring a pair of walkie-talkies though.

  4. I'm looking for some help to place the peg flags on Thursday before the ATC.

This will involve a little walking, so I'll buy all helpers a beer!

    Thanks, Richard

Richard, mate, I'll get there Tuesday PM so I'll be available and willing to help.

  5. Horror stories:- 2 inches of the tip of a rod!!! smashed insert in a ring; split overfit joint. All these happened in tubes. broken Fox box; straps pulled off; bent frame on bedchair. All these happened in UPS/FedEx/USPS transportation.

    Keith,

Maybe they're more careful with checked luggage?

Anyhow, mailing them is just as risky as flying with them, who knows?

How is your tackle making its way down to Austin?

  7. Marius,

I was going to, but cannot get a direct flight out of NYC without a lay over in Dallas or Houston. Jet Blue for a few dollars more is nonstop. It's when you switch planes a lot of luggage is gets mis-routed.

    -Mike

Yes, I hear you Mike. I am flying American through Chicago. Hopefully no surprizes...but if anything happens I'll make sure I stop by to see Paul and buy some more gear... :D

    -Marius

  8. And now at 4:45 pm it is back to $172.00....

Go figure. The big problem with Delta is they will hit you for 100 bucks for baggage (rod tubes above 62", but under 80". Over 80" not accepted at all).

Looks like I'm riding Jet Blue.

    -Mike/CT

Mike -- Try American Airlines -- right on their web site you can purchase a ticket. That's how I got mine for $190.

  9. Marius:

There is a huge difference in UPS prices from a company that has pickup and an account  vs. bringing it to a UPS store.

What costs $8 with the former can cost $16 from the store.

If your parcel is not in a cardboard box there could be a $5 surcharge.

If it's a round tube it could have a $5 surcharge. Length also has a surcharge.

I sent a square box (loaded with rods and tackle) to TX one time and it cost $14.

I sent a smaller tube to Simon Cardy and he sent his rods to TX (from NY) and he paid his local UPS $72.

Make your package as small as possible and check USPS. I just did a check with priority mail 8"x8"x 76" x 12 pounds Massachusetts to Austin $23.70. + insurance.

    Fran

Good point Fran -- I'll pack my rods in a plastic tube and check them. Seems like the way to go. I won't have that much gear and bait anyway.

    Thanks!

    Marius
