  1. i don't have a great recollection of what fly it took the first time, but i am fairly certain it was the worm. the second time it definately ate a stonefly.

interesting that the fish moved upriver and started feeding again that quickly.

  2. Tough day in terms of conditions...No sun, lots of wind, high river, muddy. Ugh. The fish were stacked up so even with the bad weather I could find them, but I long for sunny days and clear, shallow water!

More details on my blog, but I landed 5 including one mirror, and two fish that weighed in at exactly 21 lbs each. When I got home and looked at the pictures I started to wonder if this wasn't the same fish caught two times. I caught these two fish about 1/2 mile and two hours apart...same fish?

  3. Great day with my son...we hooked 4-5 carp, only landed the one. It is amazing how complicated fishing with an almost three year old can be! We lost most fish when they would get way out in the backing. I'd hook them, hand him the rod and he'd hang on for dear life while the carp ripped out into the river. Most of the fish would get way out there, turn, find some slack and throw the hook. JJ didn't mind...he just liked hanging onto the flyrod!

We caught a small bass as well, which JJ kept calling a baby.

  4. Don't get me wrong...I certainly consider that a good day as well! The only kicker is that carp fishing to me is more about the "storing of visuals." As Mr. P says, the "Take is the premier moment." I love that visual memory you get when you see the fish react to your fly and pounce on it...or the casual twitch of a fin that screams "set the hook!" Those moments are the reason I carp fish over trout, bass, steelhead, salmon etc. The actual fight is less important than the take to me, so a day like yesterday is great, but I live for the clear water, Plasma TV like visuals that burn into your brain.

  5. I do like the VT2, but I honestly prefer the Echo 2 saltwater version. The problem is the echo is only a 6 wt, and with the water warming and the fish having more energy, they would decimate a 6 wt. I generally put the heels to them pretty good and try to land them quickly...I love the take. The 6 would slow me way down! the VT2 is a great rod, but I am sorely tempted to go pick up an Echo 2 in a 7 or 8 wt.

I caught one fish on a hare's ear, all others on the worm. The worm is just deadly. if you put a worm in the right place on a tailer without spooking or lining the fish...that fish is caught. they just munch that fly.

  6. I managed to get out on the Big C today. Pretty tough conditions...The water was high, murky, and there was a steady, heavy wind. Fhe fish were there, but I had a tough time seeing them. I searched around and found some bays that held fish, and had a shallow enough grade that I could spot fish up agains the shoreline. If they were in water over knee deep, I couldn't see them at all. I landed around 15 fish, with two that weighed in at 17 lbs. Most were around 10 lbs and as is usually the case...the biggest ones got away! I did catch this nice mirror, which is as good as a 20 lber in my book...

Great day to be out on the water!

  7. First off, the belated report. Back from the annual spring trip with Wendy Berrell. As usual, a great time. We have some excellent sight fishing, caught a multitude of species (including a 7-8 lb northern pike on a size 10 rubber legged hare's ear) and as usual, enjoyed the company as much as the fishing. Details are here:

The near miss was today. Conditions on the big C were perfect...85, pure sun not much wind showing. I was all set to head out today for a trip (my bday was yesterday and I usually get one trip around my bday). I had not felt very good at work Friday, felt sick yesterday but was determined to go fishing Sunday regardless. Unfortunately, I left the house about 1am because my throat was so swollen I was having trouble breathing. I spent the night at the hospital being pumped full of drugs and steroids. Fun night. Feeling better now, but my throat is still pretty swollen and sore, some type of virus. Lots of pills and painkillers for the next few days...just will have dream about another upcoming trip. I hope everyone else had a better weekend!

  8. I think some of you may know Andy AP Emerger, legendary OR carp angler. Andy is the guy that helped get me started chasing the most rewarding fish I've ever put a hook into, and I've always appreciated his insight and help. Despite that, it has been several seasons since we actually got to fish together! Today we finally got out. Conditions were tough, the water was high and murky, but we found a way to get into some fish! I don't think either one of us kept track of numbers, we had too much fun laughing together. We did pay attention to weights, hoping for some 20 lbers, but the big fish was an 18.5, and another 18. The smallest was about 12 lbs. Despite the tough conditions, it was a great day...not sure why we waited so long to get out Andy!

  9. I've yet to catch a clooper, so I know how good you must feel today! The problem I have is that the cloopers I find only come up due to huge amounts of forage, and my fly gets lost.

Great work...i'll have to take another stab at the cottonwood hatch this year.

  10. Tough day today. David and I got out, but the weather was cool, sun was hiding, wind was ripping, and water was turbid. All in all, it was still better to be out stalking the flats (white cap waves and all) than sitting at home. Despite the poor visibility we managed to land 5 fish. David caught a 15 and a 9 lber. I was a little luckier in terms of size...I landed 3....18, 20 and 24 lbs. Some pics:

4/5 fish took that little wiggle dubbed fly i tied up the other day. I do think it was mostly because that fly sinks so fast we could flip it and get it down the fish without leading them much. IN the murk, spotting fish was really difficult.

Always good to fish with David...2009 is off to a great start!
