  1. I kid you not but two years ago fishing the Ohio River in WV, I had a run and when I landed the carp there was another hook in the carps mouth and line leading back into the river.

On pulling the line, a fishing rod apoears - an Ugly Stick with Zebco reel - all perfectly functional and now sitting in my Garage.

Lucky fish to get caught was my opinion!

  2. Hey Phil

I read the same before also - I think 'Phonebush' was one of the ones telling me the same but the carp tend to run bigger than the buffalo in the northern KY ohio R - at least the ones I catch! When I look back at my catch records - the average buffalo is about 4 - 5lb and its relatively rare to catch one over 10lbs - maybe once out of 5 sessions. On the other hand the average carp is about 10lbs. I catch buffalo and carp at roughly a one : one ratio.

When I lived in WV - around Parkersburg, usually a few buffs would show up - but the catch ration of buffalo to carp was 1:10. Any buffs were usually in the 1 - 2 lbs range also.

Maybe its my perception - but I visualize smaller buffs feeding and bigger carp moving in feeding until caught or moved on and the buffs move back in. A typical day usually starts with catching a few buffs, then after one - two hours getting 4 - 7 carp then quiet and then starting getting smaller buffs again. Usually when the buffs are being caught, I'll start upping the rate of feed going in and it tends to bring the carp back in again.

I could have it all completely backwards but thats how it seems to be.

  3. The Ohio river where I fish is stuffed with them. When the carp are not around they are but when there carp are present they tend to push out the buffalo. I usually average about 10 of them a day when fishing the river. The carp tend to come though in waves and I catch the buffalo inbetween. As the water falls below 50 they continue to feed.

Sweetcorn or maize will catch them easily. Not as easy to catch on hair setup as carp. Most success with sliding link with cage feeder. Standard method mix works. The bites are very shy - more of a trembling of the rod tip or a couple of positive knocks.

A lot of the time the hook ends up all the way through the gills positioned at the bottom of the gill cover in the corner. Its far easier and safer to cut the hook length off either right where the hook is and pull the line back through the mouth or cut the line on the outside of the mouth and pull though. I prefer the latter as I think there is less damage than trying to pull the hook out far enough to cut the line.

Again its what I have experienced and worked over the last few years.

  4. Sorry - just realised that to get to the point you walk around the bay to the LEFT of boat ramp - where you come down the hill to the ramp - sorry! My PB mirror is from there - took it in a swim further up the bank from where you are fishing but you only can get to that spot by boat.

  5. Hey Possum

I had someone tell me from the DNR that there was a confirmed mid 30 come off the point on opposite side of the lake towards the dam side. There is the main boat ramp putting in fairly close to the dam and at the point opposite from the ramp across the bay there is fairly deep water down to 30' which runs back into the bay to the left of the point. The fish fell to a worm fished fairly close in for cats and it happen late in the year. This was back in '04 and the fish was put back in. I never did get to fish that point but did take boat out and confirm the depth off the point and the drop offs. Its a good clean bottom with little snags.

You can get to the point by walking around the bay to the right of the ramp around to the other side and up to the point. It probably about a 10 - 15min walk.

Nice fishing - I've had a few mirrors out of there up to about 17lb.

  6. Its not warm enough yet - water temperature around Lexington and northern KY is still hovering around 50F. The shallows are starting to heat up though on some of these hotter days. Sun I recorded the temps going from 48F to 54F across about a 6 hour time period.

  7. The Central Fisheries Board has been stocking them in there for about 5 years. Last time I was home there was a local fishing tackle shop that I know the owner well and he showed me some photos of some caught from there. They are now up to high teens.

I grew up bream and roach fishing in Killykeen and surrounding lakes. The bream fishing was not good this year but the tench fishing is getting a lot better.
