Hey Justin, this looks like it might be be a banner year for you and the Mon. river, bud!! What a perfectly named flavor for a couple of river rats like you and Rob!! I like the cut-out picture. Are you still doing that to keep your spots a secret??

Nicely done Justin, you don't see too many quillbacks anywhere, I'm afraid, so it is pretty cool to see that they can be caught!! I've only ever seen them in formeldahyde biology jars.

Welcome to the forum, and I don't think you will have any trouble finding people to fish with you in Indiana, since it has about our largest member base!!LOL

It seems like this winter is lasting forever, and even with a few ice fishing outings, I have noticed I am getting Cabin Fever pretty badly!! I know it will only be a month and a half or so before I see open water again, but it seems like an eternity away. I turned to some old photos to remind me of what I can expect to see once the lovely open water returns. Some of these pictures keep my spirits up during this frozen time of year, and I hope you will enjoy them again too.

Good job Justin, a great start to what I'm sure will be another great year for you!!! Man am I jealous about that weather!!! We had a high today of 10, and it will be getting back to below zero again tonight, out here on the northern plains. I can't wait for Spring!!!!!

Nicely done, my friend, that is a true ice-pig!!!

Welcome to the site, and good job on the outing. You will find that one of our best American carp anglers, a guy by the name of Scott Osmond, swears by bread for bait also. So you are in good company there!!

Gruscott Abbo!!
I was stationed in Kitzingen for 3 years in the 90's, but actually lived in Sulzfeld am Main, and have fished the Main many times myself. My biggest carp there was a 20 pound 'Spiegel Karpfen'. Welcome to the board, and I think you will find that most of our carp over here are of the 'Schuppen Karpfen' variety. Do you also fish for Zander und Hecht, or only carp? We used to fish for Zander in October right from the sidewalk in downtown Kitzingen.

If you go to the link below, you can see the infamous photo of this 42.9 pound pike, and read the story from the guy who caught it in a lake in Holland. The other picture, with one pike grabbing the smaller pike is not even the same fish!!!!! Man, and I even had guys at work trying to tell me that they knew the guy who caught it, and it came out of the Rainy river in Minnesota!!! Ha!!!

Nice job Scott, one day you will just have to get a portable shack, my brother. You look too cold!!!

When I was stationed in Kitzingen Germany, back in the 90's, I used to fish the Main river near my town of Sulzfeld. I actually fished in this erosion pond off of the main channel. I used to catch tons of Eels, Bream, and lots of little 2 pound mirror carp, that were shaped just like large dinner plates. I soon got to know some of the locals who always fished across the erosion pond from me, and actually netted a couple of nice mid twenty pound mirrors for them. One day they told me about this monster carp that would prowl this particular erosion pond once in a great while. I think they guestimated it at around 60 pounds. They said it would act very weird, and would stick its head out of the water and spin slowly around, as if spying above the water to see if there was any danger there before feeding. They also said this fish was too smart to be caught by any method, and it was just fun to see it. One day, while I was soaking a fat nightcrawler on one rod, and some sweetcorn on the other, a barge went by, like they did every day, and totally drained the pond for a few seconds, before the water came tidal waving back in. That is the first time I saw that fish. I don't know how big it was, because I never did see its body, as all it ever stuck out of the water was its head. There it was, this massive, 15 pound head, jutting perfectly vertical out of the water up to its gill plates. Then it slowly spun in a circle and then submerged. Of course I tried everything I could to catch it, but to no avail. I saw this same fish about a year later, in exactly the same spot, behaving exactly the same, and with the same outcome, me not catching it!!!!! I never did catch the 'Monster of the Main', and to this day, I have never seen another carp, or any other fish behave like this, it was just weird, like a whale spy hopping. That is my monster tale all the way from Bavaria.

Welcome Silverfish, I caught many of those breams German cousins when I was stationed there in the 90's. I don't think the Germans hate them as much as you Brits do, but then again the Germans I fished with ate just about anything they caught, including Bream, Tench, Carp, and Eels.

Oh man, there is a god!!! Way to go Neil, the long wait is over, bro!!! Now go catch yourself an alligator gar!
-
Nice report and nice reults!! By the way, 50 or 60 degrees would be a monster heat wave for my state at this time of the year!!! Nice job, and I am sure you will find some big boys eventually.

Nicely done Tommy, I will be heading out for some ice-pike and walleye action on Wednesday!!
