Once I got home from Lake Thompson this afternoon, I still felt like fishing, so I went back to my favorite hole, where I had prebaited 160 pounds of maize in the morning, and set up. I had one rod in the water, and was re-tying a rig on my second pole when I heard my baitrunner singing. After a pretty good fight, this nice 31 pound 4 ounce common came to the net.

I got up early this morning, hooked the boat up and snuck out to Lake Herman to dump 160 pounds of field corn into the swim for my upcoming Fish-In. I was off the lake by 6:30 a.m., dropped the boat at home, and headed for the Lake Thompson. I probably should have taken the boat with me because my suspicions were realized when I arrived at the old flooded roadbed. The fish here are always everywhere you look, but are usually not the biggest in the lake for sure. I figured maybe this early in the spring some hog monsters would be there, but I never saw a fish that looked to be over 30 pounds here. I guess the big ones hang in the channel between the main lake and the slough, and that is where I fish from my boat. The old roadbed is convenient though, and much too shallow to get my big tub back to. Anyways, I ended up catching one 24, one 22 and one 21 pound females, and a 9 pound mirror, before they stopped biting and started acting like they were spawning. I did see a nice mirror that looked like it went 20 pounds, but was not able to catch it. I guess I will fish the channel area next time.

Rob we have a tornado watch until 10 pm EST looks like the weather is gonna turn nasty within the hour or so :D
P.S. Just heard some thunda
Good luck out there, I just dodged a twister last Saturday!! That is pretty scary trying to outrun a tornado when you are towing a heavy boat!!

Ak, that is one sweet looking cat!! How big do those bad boys get?

Great looking Sturgeon ! I fished for them many years ago on the Delta in Cali to no avail. Ok I'm jealous
We should plan a trip up there for next spring Wayne. I know that area pretty good myself, and you and I could just fish out of my boat, and just follow Dave and his party. Then if we don't catch, we can do donuts around Dave's boat!!

Ahhh man what a great looking fish!! 90 lbs hot diggity dog are those the biggest fresh water fish up your neck of the woods John?
hopefully you can go with him next time and get on in the action!
Well, definitely up Dave's way, but we have paddlefish out here on the Missouri that get over 100 pounds also. They are the biggest fish that will take a bait though. We have a snagging season for paddlefish, since they are plankton feeders. Yeah, I'm really toying with the idea of driving up there this weekend, it is about a 6 hour drive for me.

Great job guys!! Justin, what is with the face on that first one you caught?? It appears to be a snub nosed carp! That is one wacky looking fish, bro!!
-
Brookies have always been my favorite trout, or I should say char, because they are so colorful and good to eat!! Good job guys!
-
Fantastic!! Carp weekends don't get much better than that!! I think you just woke up some of the folks that think you need to go to the St. Lawrence, or Town Lake to catch 40 pound carp!!! Awesome job!!
-
Nice going Justin and Kim!! Justin will put you on the fish, Kim, stick with him. Justin, you always get to fish with the cute girls!!LOL

Fantastic fish man, way to go!! Now let's see a fifty today!!

What is a muddler?
That's what the guys on the St. Lawrence call a carp with an irregular scale pattern, or what the Brits refer to as a fully scaled mirror.

As I sit here more of the days happenings are running through my head. The carp were jumping out of the water all day long. Not just the fish I hooked but all around me. I could here them in the distance flopping back into the water, wish I had the video camera, next time I will be sure to bring it. I caught a mixture of males and females, and more than one of them gave me some water to the face when I let them go. All five of the fish that I lost were because of hook pulls, I think I need to back the drags off a little bit. When I am fishing for Trout and Salmon your can pull pretty hard on them and the hooks don't pull out. I am guessing that there mouths are harder than a carp's. The more I fish for carp the more respect they are gaining from me.
This is the first carp of the day, the pattern of the scales are pretty cool.
Nice female...........
What a white belly...........
You are right on the soft mouth bit, I had the same problem when I first started carping too, I would rip out of about 30% of my fish, because I was used to catching walleyes, pike, trout and salmon. All of these fish have a much harder mouth than carp, and all you have to do is back off the drag some, and don't put the rod to them as hard. Good job, that fish with the scales is one that will have people arguing if it is a fully scaled mirror, or a muddler!!

Paul, sheephead, or drum are generally more silver than brown.

Hey Andrew, thanks for the nice words, bud!!! I really enjoyed hanging out with you and your brother in Austin. It looks like you guys really started to catch after the event, that is pretty cool. Too bad about that big hog that escaped, but maybe you will catch her next year.
A nice finish to a pretty good and long day!!
