  1. Several carp anglers (including myself) have had their credit cards used fraudulently within last few weeks or days. I found out about this from Facebook. I had not used my card for a few months. Is it a coincidence that several carp angler were hit in a short time period, or has someone hacked CAG or an online tackle store?

  2. I appreciate fishing reports on the testing of new boilie flavors. Paul's earlier report on using natural garlic flavor boilies gave me a reason to try some of them. Well, last weekend I used some of those boilies. In a 5 hour session I used 3 different hookbaits; a single grain of fake maize, 2 kernels of Andy's wild whiskey maize and natural garlic boilies. The natural garlic boilie out-performed the other 2 baits 4-0! I caught 17,18, and 19 pound commons plus a 4 pound bluecat. There was no prebaiting done at this spot. Now I want to get some natural garlic flavoring to use on some puffs!

  3. I have caught lots of carp below dams on the Tennessee River. Most of the time I fish on the lock side of our dams which is out of the path of the water currents coming through the turbines. It is easier to chum and fish in the channel to the lock than it is in heavy current below the turbines. If there is no lock at your dam fish the largest eddies or creek mouths.

  4. The grassy point turned out to be a great place to teach some of our work place friends how to catch carp. The weather was fine and we could all fish close enough to help each other and socialize.

My friend Dustin and I were the first to arrive. Dustin is a catfisherman who has already caught some big blue cats this year. Brad and John arrived shortly after us. Brad's friends from work(David and Curtis) joined us and we got ready to catch carp.

I had prebaited the area about noon on Friday. We saw splashes just outside the baited area. I cast past that bait and splashes trying to reach deeper water. A few minutes later after observing yet another splash I decided to recast closer to the chum area. I put on fresh grits, cast a shorter distance and set the rod on the pod. Before I could attach the hanger the line went buzzing off the reel. I fought the fish and soon had the first carp of the day.

Brad gave his buddies some lessons in bait making and tackle handling.

David got the next carp on one of Brad's rods. We soon had a double on, and David had the bigger fish.

His fish was not only the larger one it also was a fully scaled mirror! I believe this was his first carp.

The buffs started to get into our baits. John probably caught the first one, but he is skilled at avoiding the camera when he catches a buff. Curtis landed a buff and got slimed!

John was happy when he finally got his first Kingston mirror.

Curtis landed another slimy critter...this time it was a channel cat.

It was great to see the mirrors come in. I even landed one myself.

    post-1716-0-05273300-1334530125_thumb.jp

David and Curtis got another double with Curtis getting more slime.

Curtis also caught a carp but I didn't get a picture of it. We were pretty busy with both buffs and carp.

Dustin the catman tried to catch catfish with his rods. Unfortunately his bluegill cutbait did not get touched. I set him up with a paylake rig on his rod complete with a puff and grits. He soon had a run but lost it apparently to a faulty swivel he had used. I got him to take care of my rods while I was away and he hooked up with a decent mid teen carp.

    Curtis manned the net.

    Dustin with his 16 pounder.

All our new carpers left us some time after noon, but they all seemed to have enjoyed learning how we fish. I hope to give Dustin more carping lessons in the future.

John, Brad and I stayed a couple more hours to fight some buffs, boats, and an occassional carp. Here 3 boats were getting uncomfortably close to Brad's rods.

I believe John was the buff king Saturday, catching more of them than the rest of us did. Finally, Brad caught a nice common to close out our day.

Kingston once again gave us a successful fish-in.

  5. Didn't see Tom's recommendation of oats til now. No worries, caught a load of fish on grits! We had a fine day of carp angling, with all of us catching carp. Three guests went home happy about the fish they had caught and new fishing methods they learned. will write more later after I catch up on much needed sleep. One great thing about our haul today...you could see your reflection in some of these fish

  6. I have got some bait in at all 3 spots for the Kingston fish-in. The water is still about 2 foot below summer level but most of the red clay around the grassy point is now covered by water. Here are a couple of shots of how the end of the point looks.

Hey Willem, hope you catch some at Pickwick.

  7. On April 14th we will have our Spring fish-in near the steamplant at Kingston, TN. The steamplant has not been putting out warm water with any consistency, but this extra warm spring weather has the carp in that area feeding well. I will do some prebaiting also. We can fish the Interstate 40 bridge area and the rock pier beside the state highway. If we get enough rain before the 14th, we should be able to fish the big grassy point area which is just south of the steamplant. We can expect to catch some carp and buffalo in these spots and possibly a grass carp from the point. This is a good opportunity to introduce new people to carp fishing. Brad and I have invited some guests and we will work to get them hooked up to some carp.

  8. Thanks everyone. This area is a popular spot with all kinds of anglers. Some crappie anglers in boats sometimes do some landscaping with trees and cement blocks which give us bankfishing carpers headaches. Note the brush pile in the corner of this picture which thanks to Willem is no longer in our way.

  9. Now that spring is definitely here I had to get back to Kingston over the weekend. Our weather has been quite warm this past week with some 80 degree temperatures. Although the weekend cooled off with highs only in the upper 60's the carp are feeding at Kingston. The water temperature at the shore was 63 degrees.

I set up on the rock pier because some locals were fishing around the bridge. During the first hour I only had one run which I lost to a hook pull within the first few seconds. The wind seemed to be blowing about 15-20 mph across the rock pier. When the local anglers left I moved to the bridge in hopes of getting a little shelter from the wind.

Within the next 4 hours I caught 7 carp and a buff while only suffering 2 more hook pulls. Here are the carp in the order they were caught.

The water is still low around the grassy point(across the river). TVA supposes to start raising the water level the 1st of April. This is what the grassy point looks like now.

I would like to have a fish-in at Kingston on Saturday, April 14th. We can fish around the bridge, the rock pier, and the grassy point.

  10. The water temperature beside the rock pier was 57 or 58 degrees. That is about the same temperature as the rest of the lake, so TVA must not be generating consistently. I should have driven around to the discharge area and checked on it...sorry. I only fished about 3 hours from the rock pier. I had 1 run and caught a 10 pound carp. The wind was strong enough to give me a lot of false beeps so I can't be sure whether the fish took much interest in my baits other than my single fish. The wind today(Sunday) is supposed to be much stronger(20 or more mph).

I watched ricky d catch a couple of fish about the same time that I caught mine. He was by the bridge. After I packed up, I drove around the little bay and chatted with him. Maybe we can fish together the next time he comes down from Kentucky. A little prebaiting at Kingston can help the fishing alot, even if the water isn't warmer.

The lake level is dropping now. With the water down about a foot and a half, some of that red clay bottom around the grassy point is now exposed. The drawdown started at the 1st of November.

  11. I will do some fishing at Kingston this weekend. The lakes around here are still mostly in the upper 50's. If TVA would generate power at Kingston consistently as the water cools more, that would be great for fishing. Just can't predict what TVA is going to do, and they won't tell the public what they are going to do. I will report how it goes this weekend.

If any of the crew wants to come to Kingston this month I think I can meet you there.
